Dragon splashdown marks end of landmark flight

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? SpaceX completed a landmark mission May 31 that saw its Dragon capsule deliver half-a-ton of supplies and equipment to the International Space Station and return safely to Earth.

The flight made history as the first privately built spacecraft to rendezvous with the International Space Station. Its true impact is expected to be seen in coming months as the company sends regular re-supply missions to the orbiting outpost and continues work to launch astronauts into orbit in a few years.

"We are hoping to continue working with NASA and hopefully flying crew within three years," said Elon Musk, the founder, CEO and chief designer for the Hawthorne, Calif.-based Space Exploration Technologies, better known as SpaceX. "This was a crucial step and makes the chances of becoming a multi planet species more likely."

NASA engineers worked closely with SpaceX throughout preparations for the uncrewed demonstration mission.

"As a country, we should be very proud," said Mike Suffredini, NASA International Space Station program manager. We took a capability that this agency has nurtured over many years, combined that with a different thought process in spacecraft design and created a team that worked very well. The SpaceX team learned a lot and so did our NASA engineers."

The SpaceX mission combined the goals of two separate flights under NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Program, known as COTS. Originally slated to fly by the station and then come back to Earth, SpaceX and the NASA agreed to let the Dragon connect to the laboratory as long as a string of performance tests were successful.

SpaceX launched the Dragon capsule on top of the company's Falcon 9 rocket at 3:44 a.m. EDT on May 22 to begin the chase of the space station. Working with an instantaneous launch window, the SpaceX launch team executed a flawless countdown that culminated with the Falcon lifting off from Space launch Complex-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The Dragon began accomplishing a long list of operational "firsts" soon after reaching space, including the first use of the trunk, a small module attached to the bottom of the capsule. The trunk holds a pair of solar arrays that generate electricity for the Dragon capsule. On operational missions, the trunk can be loaded with cargo that can be exposed to the vacuum of space.

Doors on the Dragon opened as-planned to reveal the navigation instruments and other hardware the spacecraft would need to pick out the International Space Station in the void of space and then fly to it.

The first approach came on day three of the mission, when Dragon steered itself around the station remaining 1.5 miles clear. Numerous tests were run on the spacecraft and its communications with the crew on the station.

Astronaut Don Pettit guided the historic link-up the next day, Friday, May 25, when he reached the station's 32-foot-long robotic arm, Canadarm 2, out to the Dragon as it hovered near the station.

"Looks like we caught a Dragon by the tail," the astronaut radioed from the station to ground controllers in Houston and at SpaceX's Hawthorne control center after the arm connected to a fitting on the side of Dragon.

Pettit steered the capsule to the Earth-facing port on the Harmony module while fellow station crewmember Joe Acaba locked the hatches together. The crew unloaded the Dragon's cargo over the weekend and placed used equipment back inside for the return to Earth. The Dragon is the only cargo-carrying spacecraft designed to return safely to the planet rather than burn up in the atmosphere.

"We all remember the transcontinental railroad that opened the Western frontier," Pettit told reporters. "It was celebrated and completed by a golden spike. This is kind of the equivalent. No one remembers who pounded it in, but its completion was important and remembered."

Reversing the process a few days later, Pettit pulled Dragon away from its port on May 31 and released it to fly on its own again. As planned, the Dragon fired its thrusters to move away from the station's vicinity. Dragon released the trunk and its solar arrays before turning its heat shield toward Earth for the fiery plunge through the atmosphere.

Descending under a canopy of parachutes, the Dragon splashed down hundreds of miles west of Baja California to be recovered by ships and taken to port.

Musk said the ambitious mission should ease concerns people had about the rocket, spacecraft and future plans.

"There was reason to doubt that we would succeed because there wasn't a precedent for what we achieved," Musk said. "I think those reasons no longer remain having done what we have done so I hope those doubts are put to rest."

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol F1 review

What is a DJ? Everyone who considers him or herself one can probably give you a unique answer. Is everyone with a music collection and a sense for good timing a DJ, or does their music collection have to exceed a certain number of gigabytes or slabs of vinyl to be in the club (no pun intended)? Audio playback devices are certainly getting more plentiful and powerful on a large scale; anyone who's played with an iOS DJ app can tell you that. In the deeper end of the DJ pool, things aren't expanding at such a frantic pace. But every once in a while a new toy crops up that adds depth and breadth to the way music nerds play back music. Native Instruments' just-released Traktor Kontrol F1 is a blinking slab of rainbow-tinged hardware with an intense devotion to manipulating samples. While boxes from Roland and Akai have been defining genres for decades, this 16-pad add-on takes the sampling game to a new arena. Will DJ's want it? We feel it's safe to say they will. At $279, should they buy it? That question's a little more complicated.

Stocks see worst day of year after jobs data

Richard Drew / AP

Trader John Panin, left, and specialist Frederick Edwards work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange Friday. Stocks fell sharply Friday after the release of a dismal report on U.S. job creation.

By Roland Jones

A gloomy U.S. jobs report and signs of a global economic slowdown hammered Wall Street Friday, wiping out the stock market?s gains for 2012 and leaving investors wondering where to turn.

The Dow Jones industrial average sank 275 points, or 2.2 percent, chalking up its biggest one-day drop since November. The market index closed down 0.8 percent for the year and off 2.7 percent for the week.

Market participants had expected to see a mildly negative employment report Friday, but they ?hadn?t discounted the kind of numbers we saw this morning,? Barton Biggs, a hedge fund manager at Traxis Partners, told CNBC Friday.

Biggs also warned that the chance of a ?mild double-dip recession? is now about 40 percent.

?I?m not that bearish about the economy and the market, but am I ready to step in in a big way? No,? he said.

Friday?s jobs report from the Labor Department showed the U.S. economy created only 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year, as the nation?s unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent in April -- the first increase in 11 months.

The government also said the economy created far fewer jobs in the previous two months than first thought, revising numbers down to show 49,000 fewer jobs created.

Friday?s steep market drop spooked investors. The VIX index, a measure of investor fear, rose to levels not seen in five months. And the value of government bonds and gold soared as investors sought safe places to park their money.

The weak U.S. outlook added to a growing global sense of gloom. New data from the euro zone Friday showed unemployment in the region was 11 percent in April -- the highest level since records began in 1995. And there are signs that manufacturing in China -- a driver of global growth in the recession -- is slowing.

Many had looked to the U.S. as a bright spot of growth in the global economy, but Friday?s jobs report added more evidence to the view that growth in the U.S. is slowing, suggesting weaker corporate earnings ahead and weighing on stock prices.

Stocks saw their worst month in two years in May, ending more than 6 percent lower, as investors worried about Europe?s ongoing debt crisis. The downturn in the aggregate U.S. market has shaken some $1 trillion out of investors? pockets.

Investors will have to put up with more uncertainty in June, analysts say, as the fate of the euro zone waits to see the outcome of Greece?s elections on June 17.

Greece, which unleashed the financial turmoil in the euro zone, will go to the polls for a crucial second election on June 17 that may determine whether it remains a member of the currency union. Investors are concerned about the unknown consequences of a Greek exit, fearful that it may precipitate the disintegration of the euro zone.

Despite the market downturn Friday and global economic fears, Peter Sorrentino, senior portfolio manager at Huntington Asset Management, counsels that investors can still find value in the market.

?We?re seeing stock prices back down where they were at the beginning of the year, but earnings are still there,? he told CNBC, noting that company balance sheets are very strong, as corporations have spent years paying off debt and raising cash to record levels.

Sorrentino added that, after Friday?s downturn, bargains can still be found in the agriculture and energy sectors.

Shares of Facebook continued to slide below their initial public offering price of $38, closing down 6 percent at $27.72.

Are there any bright spots in the market?

Federer sets another major record at French Open

(AP) ? For Roger Federer, setting records on the tennis court is getting to be a pretty ho-hum endeavor.

The perks that come with them, like dining with Queen Elizabeth II, are the things to really remember.

"Yes, I have had lunch next to the Queen ? with the Queen, basically," Federer said. "Big honor, obviously ... Thank God, she came."

Federer beat Adrian Ungur of Romania 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 Tuesday in the second round of the French Open. With the win, the 16-time Grand Slam champion broke a record he shared with Jimmy Connors for most career victories at major tournaments in the Open era, which began in 1968. He is now 234-35 in tennis' top four tournaments, an .870 winning percentage.

But he was less than his dominant self, wasting two match points in the third set before losing the tiebreaker.

"Instead of being aggressive, I let him show me what he could do," Federer said. "He played two beautiful shots, and then I started not playing very well."

Novak Djokovic also advanced to the third round, as did top-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Radwanska defeated Venus Williams 6-2, 6-3, eliminating the seven-time Grand Slam champion one day after Serena Williams lost in the first round.

On Thursday, defending champion Rafael Nadal will get back on court in his quest for a record seventh French Open title. No. 2 Maria Sharapova and No. 4 Petra Kvitova are also scheduled to play.

Against Ungur, Federer had an easy run in the first two sets but then lost his touch for a while in the third.

"I have been around for so long that, even though I expect myself to win, I can still manage to do that," Federer said. "Whereas in the beginning, when you think you're good but you're maybe not that good yet, you get many more surprise losses."

Federer has a 33-4 win-loss record this season with four titles, but he hasn't won a Grand Slam title since the 2010 Australian Open. To get back into the French Open final for the sixth time, he may have to face Djokovic in the semifinals.

Last year, Federer defeated Djokovic at that stage, ending the Serb's 43-match winning streak. And if they meet at Roland Garros again this year, Djokovic will have another streak on the line.

The top-ranked Djokovic, who beat Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia 6-0, 6-4, 6-4 Tuesday, has won 23 straight Grand Slam matches and needs five more to win his fourth straight major title.

"Everything is working great," Djokovic said. "You know, I'm feeling better and better every match."

For Venus Williams, things aren't going as smoothly. Although she has never won the French Open, the 31-year-old American has always been considered a contender at every Grand Slam tournament.

That all changed last year.

Williams withdrew before her second-round match at the 2011 U.S. Open, revealing that she had been diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, a condition that can cause fatigue and joint pain.

She needed three sets to win in the first round Sunday, and never really looked like challenging Radwanska this time.

"When I lose a match, I don't really like to get into ... any of those other things," Williams said when asked about her health situation. "It's just important to give credit to the people who won. And I didn't win."

3 Sensible Home Renovation Schemes for Fun | Free Press Release

A project like this is even more exciting when you can design it using your own imagination. Taking a thought and making it real is very gratifying. So much around your home is easier to do than you realize. By not hiring a professional, you will save a chunk of money than can be used for your job at hand. If you have no experience with electrical wiring and such; you will need to leave these issues to a professional. Although you may need to spend a little extra to hire an electrician; by doing so, you may have saved yourself from an expensive tragedy because you did not.

Most two story homes will have a standard type of railing on the stairways. We have seen some that have very thin metal railings which are not very appealing, to be honest. This scheme will entail changing out those boring railings with some with pizzazz. If you do a little looking online, you will see that you have many options, other than the standard railings you will usually see. These railings are made from a variety of woods. Not to mention that these railings will have a lot more character than the standard ones that may be present. Once you see what is on the market, you will never look at your old railings the same. Installing these covers is only the first step of your home improvement renovations; in fact, there are several projects you can start right away. It is easy to trim out open doorways and throughways (these go from one room to another). Without costing too much money, this home-improvement endeavor will definitely improve the ambience inside your house. You can find attractive wooden trim that will add a much more noticeable design effect. There is also trim at the base of your walls which you can change out as you are doing this. All you need to do is securely nail into the walls and you will be done this very economical and easy to do project.

If you live in a cooler region, then here is a simple home improvement project that will keep you warm. This project involves installing a heat lamp in the ceiling of your bathroom, plus a separate light switch for the control. You will use this to keep you warm when you step out of the shower or bath.

This type of comfort-related improvement is not as expensive as you may think. This lamp can be nearly effortless to install, along with wiring to expanded electrical switch housing. You wont ever want to be without one, after you feel the warmth of it upon stepping out of the shower on a cold winter night.

In reality, we pretty fond of the eating bar home improvement idea, as it will create a more open space and make the room feel bigger. This may seem like a large and strenuous task, although as you have just read there really isnt much to it. That is always the way it appears, things around the house often sound demanding. Simplifying things starts with leaning more and gaining self-reliance.
