LOS ANGELES ? An expert in ancient art who has overseen museums in England, the U.S. and his native Australia has been named director of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Getty officials announced Tuesday that Timothy Potts takes the position Sept. 1.
He replaces David Bomberg, who resigned earlier this month to return to research, scholarship and writing.
Bomberg was appointed interim director two years ago.
Potts has been director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England, since 2008.
Before that he ran the Kimbell Art Museum in Forth Worth, Texas, for 10 years.
Previous to that he was director of the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.
Potts has a doctorate in ancient Near Eastern art and archaeology from the University of Oxford and has written extensively on art.
