Lisa Whelchel tackles challenges her TV character never would have dreamed of on "Survivor: Philippines."

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

After a slow, slow couple of weeks in the entertainment world, finally there are some decent new prospects in TV and movies. Children of the 1980s won't be able to resist watching Lisa Whelchel, who played the exact opposite of a "Survivor" on "Facts of Life," tackle that show's challenges. Jake Gyllenhaal's new movie "End of Watch" looks promising, and your favorite TV shows will be honored during the Primetime Emmys.

WEDNESDAY: 'Survivor: Philippines'
On 1980s hit comedy "The Facts of Life," Lisa Whelchel played spoiled rich girl Blair Warner. On the show, she and a friend were once described as "the dimwits of Bonwits." Now Whelchel will have to rough it in a way Blair would never have imagined -- as a contestant on "Survivor: Philippines." Whelchel is not the only famous contestant: retired MLB second-baseman Jeff Kent will also try to outplay and outlast the competition. Will their fame hamper or help their quest? Tune in to find out. (Premieres Sept. 19, 8 p.m., CBS.)?

FRIDAY: 'End of Watch'
Fans of the late, lamented "The Shield" on FX may think their show has returned when they watch the trailer for "End of Watch." Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena play LAPD officers fighting criminals and drug cartels in a drama that's already garnering some positive buzz. The cops wear button cameras so the footage is delivered in that unedited "Blair Witch" style that some viewers love and sends others running for the barf bags. (Opens Sept. 21.)?

SUNDAY: Primetime Emmy Awards
Jimmy Kimmel will host the Primetime Emmy Awards for this first time, and don't expect him to stay in the background. "Hopefully, I?ll be able to insert myself in the entirety of the broadcast," the funnyman told reporters at the TV Critics' summer press tour. HBO has the most nominees, with AMC's "Mad Men" and FX's "American Horror Story" each pulling in 17 nods.??
