Public employee union defends Denver cop who was fired for driving drunk at 143 mph

posted at 8:20 pm on December 29, 2011 by Tina Korbe

On June 17, 2010, Denver police officer Derrick Curtis Saunders was arrested for speeding and driving under the influence. Before he was pulled over, he was driving at 143 mph in a 55-mph zone. That?s 88 miles an hour?more than?the speed limit. His blood-alcohol level was 0.089 percent, slightly higher than the 0.08 legal limit.

Appropriately, the Denver Police Department dismissed him. (A judge also sentenced him to five days in jail, fined him $300 and ordered him to perform 100 hours of community service.) Now, Saunders would like his job back ? and the Denver Police Protection Association stands ready to help him.

Saunders ? with the help of the union ? filed an appeal to the Denver Civil Service Commission to request his job back. The Denver Post reports:

Saunders? appeal to the Denver Civil Service Commission asserts that Martinez?s findings and penalties are ?unfounded and/or unsupported by the facts? and violate principles of fundamental fairness.

The penalty is ?disproportionate to the offenses alleged and/or is excessive so as to be punitive rather than corrective in nature,? according to the appeal, filed by the Denver Police Protective Association?s lawyers.

Nick Rogers, the union?s president, didn?t return a call for comment.

This is so patently absurd that I barely know what to say about it. Is it a union?s job to protect its members from ever bearing the consequences of poor behavior? Apparently so, as not even breaking the law seems to qualify as grounds for the dismissal of a public employee union member. (Consider, too, that the man in question was himself a police officer, whose very job is to uphold the law.) The union mentality seems to be: Members should be able to be not only lazy or ineffective but even negligent and irresponsible and still keep their jobs. The worst part: Just as was the case before he was fired, if Saunders is reinstated, it?ll be taxpayers who pay his salary.

This kind of nonsense helps to explain why unions are on the cusp of losing all credibility.

Clergymen clash at Bethlehem birthplace of Jesus

(AP) ? The annual cleaning of one of Christianity's holiest churches deteriorated into a brawl between rival clergy Wednesday, as dozens of monks feuding over sacred space at the Church of the Nativity battled each other with brooms until police intervened.

The ancient church, built over the traditional site of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, is shared by three Christian denominations ? Roman Catholics, Armenians and Greek Orthodox. Wednesday's fight erupted between Greek and Armenian clergy, with both sides accusing each other of encroaching on parts of the church to which they lay claim.

The monks were tidying up the church ahead of Orthodox Christmas celebrations in early January, following celebrations by Western Christians on Dec. 25. The fight erupted between monks along the border of their respective areas. Some shouted and hurled brooms.

Palestinian security forces rushed in to break up the melee, and no serious injuries were reported. A Palestinian police spokesman would not immediately comment.

A fragile status quo governs relations among the denominations at the ancient church, and to repair or clean a part of the structure is to own it, according to accepted practice. That means that letting other sects clean part of the church could allow one to gain ground at another's expense. Similar fights have taken place during the same late-December cleaning effort in the past.

Tensions between rival clergy at the church have been a fact of life there for centuries and have often been caught up in international politics.

In the 1800s, friction between the denominations at the church ? each backed by foreign powers ? became so fraught that Russian Czar Nicholas I deployed troops along the Danube to threaten a Turkish sultan who had been favoring the Catholics over the Orthodox.

Those disagreements threaten the integrity of the church itself, which was originally built 1,500 years ago and parts of which have fallen into disrepair. Although the roof has needed urgent work for decades, and leaking rainwater has ruined much of the priceless artwork inside, a renovation has been delayed all these years by disagreements among the denominations over who would pay.

Only recently, the Palestinian Authority brokered an agreement to move ahead with replacing the roof, and officials hope work will begin in 2012.

'Homeless By Choice' College Kid on the Art of Bourgeois Homelessness [Homelessness]

'Homeless By Choice' College Kid on the Art of Bourgeois HomelessnessA Cardozo student spent a year living on the street because "I wasn't satisfied, my life just felt meaningless because I didn't have really any challenges." Noting that Neaderthals probably didn't experience boredom, he quit paying for his apartment and started sleeping on the street.

After moving back indoors for the winter months, "David" told his tale to the Yeshiva University Observer. (He's keeping his identity secret until he gets a job.) The interview, entitled "Homeless By Choice," reads like a primer on maintaining an outwardly bourgeois lifestyle while sleeping on the street. The key was maintaining a membership and four lockers at the New York Health and Racquet Club, he says:

So I have one locker for running clothes and laundry, one for dress shirts, one for dress pants and one for miscellaneous things. And also each locker has a spot for shoes at the top so that's really good.

I had to really reduce the amount of stuff that I had. I had to get rid of everything that's nonessential. I only have, like, five dress shirts, five dress pants, some running clothes that are necessary and then obviously sweatshirts and stuff. Other than clothes I don't really have a lot of stuff, just stuff for shaving and brushing my teeth and books. I have a school locker too, so that helps.

I also have access to my school. Its open until midnight and then opens again at 8 a.m. so I nap there a lot. There's this one room in the library that has couches and I nap there during the day when I have breaks in between classes. At night I try and stay in there as late as possible so I can get the maximum amount of warmth. So I'll leave there at midnight and go find a spot and then NY Health and Racquet club opens at six. So I really only have six hours outside, so its not unbearable.

Asked whether he recommends homelessness for others, David replied in the negative, but did noted that he could do a bang-up job as a "homelessness consultant":

One thing that I definitely see doing being a "homelessness consultant." There are so many people that are getting foreclosed on and have nowhere to go. The fact of the matter is, I would say that maybe 100 dollars a month invest in gym and lockers and equipment, it can be done. I wouldn't recommend it for someone it wasn't a necessity for. But for someone going through hard times, it can be done? Just because you sleep outside for six hours a night doesn't mean that for the rest of the day you can't be shaved showered, in clothes, acting normal and doing normal things.

So, there you have it. The secret to successful homelessness: Having enough discretionary income to afford a gym membership, and maybe college tuition at a school where the library stays open late. Although at that point, you could maybe just move into a flophouse? Depending on the weather, where your tuition is coming from, and how comfortable you find park benches. Personally, I keep a spare memory foam mattress pad in my hobo bindle. Really improves the comfort of rusted-out sidewalk grates. [YU Observer, sleeping man of unknown housing status via Flickr]

No Ticker Tape Parade for Iraq War Troops ? Per Obama Administration

British troops are celebrated in London after returning from Iraq. (Daily Mail)

Officials in Washington and New York say they are open to a ticker tape parade for the Iraq War troops but Pentagon officials say they haven?t been asked to plan for one.
Obama pulled US troops from Iraq in a politically motivated move to appease his far left base.
The Army Times reported:

Americans probably won?t be seeing a huge ticker-tape parade anytime soon for troops returning from Iraq, and it?s not clear if veterans of the nine-year campaign will ever enjoy the grand, flag-waving, red-white-and-blue homecoming that the nation?s fighting men and women received after World War II and the Gulf War.

Officials in New York and Washington say they would be happy to help stage a big celebration, but Pentagon officials say they haven?t been asked to plan one.

Most welcome-homes have been smaller-scale: hugs from families at military posts across the country, a somber commemoration by President Obama at Fort Bragg, N.C.

With tens of thousands of U.S. troops still fighting a bloody war in Afghanistan, anything that looks like a big victory celebration could be seen as unseemly and premature, some say.

?It?s going to be a bit awkward to be celebrating too much, given how much there is going on and how much there will be going on in Afghanistan,? said Don Mrozek, a military history professor at Kansas State University.

Two New York City councilmen, Republicans Vincent Ignizio and James Oddo, have called for a ticker-tape parade down the stretch of Broadway known as the Canyon of Heroes. A similar celebration after the Gulf War was paid for with more than $5.2 million in private donations, a model the councilmen would like to follow.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said last week that he was open to the idea but added, ?It?s a federal thing that we really don?t want to do without talking to Washington, and we?ll be doing that.?

Killing on Oxford Street Mars Boxing Day in London

The annual British day of bargain-hunting was cut short in London on Monday by shopping rage, as a young man in London was stabbed to death just after noon.

The Metropolitan Police said that 10 people were being held in connection with the stabbing, which happened in the center of the city?s West End shopping district as it was packed with thousands of holiday shoppers taking advantage of Boxing Day sales.

Much of the famous shopping street remained closed into the evening as the police continued to investigate.

The police reported a second stabbing hours later, Sky News reported, though it was not clear whether the two episodes were connected.

Mark Dunne, of London?s Metropolitan Police, said the first attack took place after two groups of young people appeared to have become involved in a large-scale altercation, The Associated Press reported. He said the police were likely to find many witnesses. ?This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now, on the busiest shopping day,? he said.

A little like Black Friday in the United States, the day after Christmas in Britain has become a traditional time of barnstorming stores offering deep discounts.

But unlike their American counterparts, British shoppers are not known for engaging in the sorts of stampedes and violence that have marred Black Friday sales in the United States in recent years.

A Twitter user named Kentis Gopalla posted the following image of panicked shoppers on Oxford Street after the stabbing:

Another picture posted to Twitter by a London-based user showed a man seated behind an area cordoned off by police as an officer stands over him.

The motive for the attack in London was not immediately known. Sky News reported that it occurred in or around a Foot Locker branch along the busy street.

That appeared to be confirmed by video posted online later on Monday that showed a chaotic scene outside a Foot Locker on Oxford Street as the police struggled to control crowds and emergency medical technicians worked on a man lying on the pavement.

It was not the first time that shoppers on Oxford Street were scattered by violence. In August, a similar stabbing occurred outside an H&M clothing store along the street, The Daily Mirror reported.

British shoppers also faced snarled transportation on Monday as transit workers staged strikes, The Guardian reported.

North Korea to loom large in Japan-China summit

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda heads to Beijing on Sunday as the first foreign leader to meet the Chinese leadership after the death of North Korean strongman Kim Jong-Il.

President Hu Jintao could use the occasion to assure the international community that Beijing was working to ensure a stable transition of power in its reclusive and impoverished partner, Japanese experts said.

"It is unlikely that China will reveal everything it knows. It is more likely that Chinese leaders will give assurances that they are calling on Pyongyang to ensure stability and order," said Shin Kawashima, associate professor at the University of Tokyo.

Noda's overnight visit was set for December 12 and 13 but rescheduled to Sunday and Monday at China's request, apparently for domestic reasons, which some suggested were to do with its falling on the Nanjing Massacre anniversary.

Noda, who came to power in September, will welcome the chance of more face time with Chinese leaders, as Beijing readies to promote younger leaders, with Vice President Xi Jinping seen as the most likely replacement for Hu.

Noda met with Hu in November on the sidelines of the APEC meeting in Honolulu and agreed to make "reciprocal efforts" to enhance ties, often dogged by economic and territorial disputes.

But Kim's death has shifted the agenda from bilateral issues to global worries about nuclear-armed North Korea, where Kim's untested young son Kim Jong-Un appears to be taking the reins of the Stalinist state.

Almost nothing is known about him, including his grasp on the North's military and how he might respond to global calls to open up the country.

"China holds the key for assuring stability in North Korea," said Takehiko Yamamoto, professor at Waseda University.

Japan, having no ties with the North, can do little other than support China's engagement with Pyongyang, he said.

"You might call it an achievement if Japan and China only confirm their joint resolve to work together to protect peace and stability in northeast Asia including on the Korean peninsula," he said.

On the bilateral front, the two Asian giants will go over a list of touchy issues, including territorial and energy field disputes in the East China Sea as well as China's increasingly assertive naval posture in the region.

Japan will urge China towards a framework dialogue to set rules for the development of gas fields in the East China Sea, near disputed islands called Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese.

The two are still trying to heal diplomatic wounds inflicted a year ago when China reacted in fury over the arrest of one of its fishermen near the islands after he rammed his ship into Japanese coastguard vessels.

An irate Beijing cut or seriously reduced trade, diplomatic and cultural exchanges until Japan climbed down and released the trawlerman.

The leaders are expected to agree to hold periodic meetings of senior diplomats and defence officials in a bid to avoid similar confrontations.

China is expected to be fairly placatory ahead of the 40th anniversary of the normalisation of diplomatic ties in September, an event it wants to pass off smoothly.

"China wants the celebration to end with no troubles. Perhaps China will not offer anything new, but it should be seen as a reflection of their caution," Kawashima said.

Noda and Hu will likely agree on a plan for Japan to purchase Chinese government bonds, a first for an industrial power, in a move that would strengthen financial ties and diversify Tokyo's forex holdings.

From Tokyo's point of view, this will help hedge against exposure to the dollar at a time the yen has remained stubbornly high.

It will also mark a victory for Beijing as it seeks to internationalise its currency.

Noda is also expected to outline his decision to join negotiations on the US-led trans-Pacific partnership (TPP), a potential rival to China's push for a trade pact with ASEAN states and their neighbors, including Japan.

Japan, whose biggest trade partners are China followed by the US, is trying to keep its feet in both camps and maintain access to all key markets in the greater Asia-Pacific region.

Among diplomatic niceties, Noda is also expected to thank China for its assistance in the aftermath of the march earthquake and tsunami, and to ask that Beijing send a pair of pandas to hard-hit Sendai to boost morale.

Fix: Unable to Change Default Program Extension on Windows 7

Today, I?m going to show you a way out, if you ever face a situation, where you are?unable to change the default program extension in Windows. I was helping out a client of?mine. His operating system had somehow changed the Default program extension to different program; i.e. the file was supposed to open with Outlook ? but instead it change into Notepad.??

Unable to Change Default Program Extension

When I tried to change it back to Outlook under Properties of that file the change option was grayed out

image thumb Fix: Unable to Change Default Program Extension on Windows 7

So I tried to right-click on the file and clicked on ?Open With? dialog box, because there you have a change box ?Always use the selected program to open this kind of file?.?

prog defaults 9 Fix: Unable to Change Default Program Extension on Windows 7

But strangely that check box was grayed out, as well.?When I select Outlook, it opens fine. But I was just unable to set it as the default option.

So I went to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations?and tried to change?it there;?but sadly I was again unable to. I was totally stumped because the UAC was turned off, the user is a Windows administrator ? so there was no reason for the option to be disabled.

That?s when I remembered that there is an option in Windows registry, where you can change it. So I opened the registry and navigated to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

Here you have to find your extension under?a key called ?UserChoice?.

What this registry key does, is if you change the Default file extension, Windows creates this key and adds the value there.

regedit progid Fix: Unable to Change Default Program Extension on Windows 7

On the Right hand side you?ll see string value ?Progid? under that value you?ll see the current program that is associated with it. So I tried to change that value but it gave me an error: Cannot edit Progid.

image thumb2 Fix: Unable to Change Default Program Extension on Windows 7

Now I realized what was wrong! For?some reason, that specific registry key doesn?t have permission to change the file extension, and that was the reason why?those options were grayed out for me. So I took ownership for the parent key? and inherited the permission.

image thumb3 Fix: Unable to Change Default Program Extension on Windows 7

Now I could delete the ?UserChoice? key. Once I deleted it and I rebooted the system. And voil? -?now I got this window!

image thumb4 Fix: Unable to Change Default Program Extension on Windows 7

Once I selected the correct program I made it as default and it stayed.

Hope this becomes helpful for someone who runs into a similar problem.

Sunday 25th December, 2011 (ANI)

Former Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore is the front runner for the cricket coach post, a senior Pakistan Cricket Board official has said.

"Whatmore is due to come to Pakistan sometime next month to discuss issues relating to our search for a head coach," The Daily Times quoted PCB official Subhan Ahmad, as saying.

"It would be premature to say we have taken a decision to appoint Whatmore as head coach but we are in the process of interviewing candidates and Whatmore is a front runner," he added.

Whatmore, who also led Sri Lanka to the 1996 World Cup win, is currently overseeing the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League.

Whatmore, 57, who played seven Tests for Australia, was tipped to take over as coach in 2007 instead of his compatriot Geoff Lawson.

The PCB has appointed Mohsin Khan as an interim coach after Waqar Younis stepped down in September due to personal reasons. (ANI)

Bengals beat Cardinals 23-16, stay in contention

(AP) ? The stadium was only two-thirds full again. The Cardinals were on another one of their incredible comebacks, threatening to derail the Cincinnati Bengals' surprising playoff surge.

A pair of tangled up feet made the difference.

The Bengals moved one win away from the playoffs Saturday, holding on for a 23-16 victory over Arizona that secured only their third winning record in the past 21 years.

Cincinnati (9-6) can clinch the final AFC wild card berth by beating Baltimore at Paul Brown Stadium next Sunday. The Bengals moved a game ahead of the Jets, who fell to 8-7 with a 29-14 loss to the Giants on Saturday.

"It's been a big year for me and for this team," rookie quarterback Andy Dalton said. "It's something we believed we had a chance to do. We weren't getting much credit from outside. We'll find out next week."

Dalton threw two more touchdown passes, becoming only the fourth rookie to have 20 in a season, and Cincinnati got a break when the NFL's top comeback team tripped itself up in the closing minutes.

Wide-open receiver Early Doucet tripped at the goal line and went down, letting a fourth-down pass fall incomplete with 1:12 left. The Cardinals (7-8) got the ball one more time, but the clock ran out after a completion.

A few minutes later, the Jets' loss put the Bengals in position to reach the playoffs. New York would have won the tiebreaker if both teams won out.

"We started this quite a while ago ? seems like just yesterday," coach Marvin Lewis said. "But now we're right where we want to be at the end."

Their rookie quarterback put them in position.

Dalton threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Gresham and a 19-yarder to Jerome Simpson, who did a somersault over a defender and landed on both feet in the end zone.

Dalton joined Peyton Manning (26), Charlie Conerly (22) and Dan Marino (20) as the only NFL rookies to throw 20 touchdown passes.

Down 23-0 heading into the fourth quarter, the NFL's best comeback team nearly pulled off its most improbable one yet. Arizona took advantage of Cedric Benson's two fumbles, getting a pair of touchdown passes by John Skelton and Jay Feely's field goal with 3:16 left.

The Cardinals then had their chance to pull even. The Bengals ran an all-out blitz on fourth down from the Cincinnati 17-yard line, and Doucet wound up uncovered at the goal line. Skelton lofted the ball into the end zone, but Doucet tripped and fell.

"It was a blitz and nobody was there," Doucet said. "It was one of those deals where I hadn't hooked it up and my feet got tangled. It's a play I should've made. It was my fault. That's a play I normally make."

The Cardinals had their four-game winning streak snapped and were eliminated from playoff contention.

Cincinnati's defense dominated the first three quarters. Arizona didn't cross midfield until Skelton completed a pass with 13:25 to go, but piled up 208 yards in the final quarter.

Skelton started for the second consecutive week in place of Kevin Kolb, who hasn't fully recovered from a concussion. Skelton was 23 of 44 for 297 yards with three interceptions and five sacks that helped the Bengals get the 23-0 lead.

It could have been worse. Mike Nugent, the NFL's most accurate kicker, missed field goals of 35 and 48 yards in the first half.

Arizona has rallied from fourth-quarter deficits six times this season, one shy of the NFL record. The Cardinals have won three games in overtime, tying the league record.

They couldn't do it one more time.

"Yeah, we're a second-half team," Skelton said. "That's how it has been all year. But in the end, it was too little, too late."

Dalton was 18 of 31 for 154 yards and two touchdowns on a sunny, 39-degree afternoon in front of only 41,273 fans. The Bengals have sold out only one of their seven home games, when the Steelers brought thousands of fans.

Dalton's second touchdown pass had a highlight finish.

Simpson got open for a catch-and-run to the goal line. With Daryl Washington between him and the end zone, Simpson jumped and twirled past the linebacker, landing on both feet in the end zone and raising both arms like a triumphant gymnast.

"One of the key parts for me was I stuck the landing," Simpson said. "I stuck the landing like a gymnast. That was probably one of the most surprising of all the plays in my career. It was pretty awesome, I thought."

For most of the game, the Cardinals couldn't do anything right. Rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson picked off a Dalton pass in the third quarter, but the interception was nullified by Arizona's second roughing-the-passer penalty of the game.

Worse, Peterson hurt his left hamstring on the play, pulling up on the return. The first-round pick left the game and didn't return. He wore a protective boot after the game.

"He's got a strain, it's not a tear," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "We're fortunate that it doesn't appear to anything long term."

Notes: Beanie Wells became the first Cardinal to run for 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in a season. ... After the game, the Bengals made a buy-one, get-one-free offer to season ticket holders, trying to fill the stadium for the final game. ... A.J. Green, playing with a strained right shoulder, had two catches for 25 yards. He passed Cris Collinsworth's club record for a rookie with 1,013 yards on the season.

Minimize harmful free-radicals caused by stress with antioxidant-rich superfoods like cranberries, pomegranates, oranges, bell peppers, kale, and yes, even organic dark chocolate. Because each color contains different antioxidants, be sure to use a rainbow of colors in your cooking and baking.

Tip Number 2: Stay Hydrated with Water-Inspired Beverages

It's easy to over-indulge on both food and alcohol this time of year. To help flush out excess sodium, sugar and the toxins from alcohol, keep pitchers of filtered water available for your guests. Try our recipe for Filtered Water Infused with Organic Citrus Fruit Slices:

  • Fill a water pitcher with filtered water.

  • Add 1 sliced orange, 1 sliced lime, 1 sliced lemon and a handful of fresh mint.

  • Refrigerate for 2 hours to allow flavors to infuse before serving.

Tip Number 3: Sub in All-Natural Sweeteners

Show off your baking skills and impress your guests with cookies, cakes, muffins and quick breads made with all-natural, lower-glycemic sweeteners. Replace processed white sugar with organic 100 percent pure raw honey or maple syrup from local producers, coconut palm sugar or date sugar. These options all have more nutritive value than plain-old sugar and can help stave off sugar-induced energy crashes.

Tip Number 4: Bring On the Whole Grains

Pick your favorite crostini recipe (we like this one), then swap a regular baguette for one made with organic whole wheat or spelt. If you're making a pasta or rice dish, look for products that feature whole grain organic brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet or amaranth. Your guests will wonder why they feel so much lighter yet more satisfied from your crafty cooking.

When baking, replace all-purpose flour with whole grain options like organic spelt or whole wheat flour, which not only boost nutrients, but also flavor.

Tip Number 5: Give Your Guests Nutrient-Dense, Plant-Based Dishes

Surprise both your carnivore and vegan guests with delicious plant-based dishes that are easy to prepare, flavor-packed and nutrient-rich. Vegetable dishes help you fill up quicker and give your body the nutrients it needs to off-set the negative affects of richer foods and beverages.

Our favorite crowd-pleasers? Roasted organic winter squash tossed with olive oil, sage and rosemary. Cauliflower mashed potatoes. Arugula and goat cheese salad tossed with cranberries and spicy pumpkin seeds. Baked kale chips. And Clean Plates' recipe makeover of "Top Chef Texas" contestant Molly Brandt's Smokey Sweet Potato Soup with Pork Cheek and Tequila Cilantro Lime Cream.

Tip Number 6: Choose Organic, Locally Produced Booze

Yes, even the alchohol you serve can be healthier, for you and the planet. Avoid the chemicals used in conventional farming and minimize your environmental impact by choosing organic and biodynamic wines, organic liquors and locally-brewed beers. Up for a little mixology? Check out our makeover of Saveur Magazine's Eggnog, as well as these delicious cocktail recipes (featuring anti-oxidant-boosting cranberries and pomegranate, no less -- see tip #1!). For the teatotalers in your group, make the eggnog sans alcohol, or offer sparkling water garnished with fruit.

Tip Number 7: Dress Up Your Crudit?s

We admit it, vegetable crudit?s aren't the most exciting addition to your holiday spread. Still, many guests appreciate having an obvious healthy option. And crudit?s are not only refreshing and packed with essential vitamins, they also make an eye-pleasing display -- and, per tip #5, vegetables can off-set the effects of richer foods (and booze). Pair with a selection of two to three dips made with organic ingredients -- choose fiber-rich bean dips and hummus over cream-heavy options.

Tip Number 8: Feature Antibiotic- and Hormone-Free Meat

For nibbles to please the carnivores on your guest list, make your way to your local farmer's market and find out who offers pasture-raised, grass-fed meat and poultry without antibiotics or hormones. You can also use the Eat Wild and Local Harvest websites to find local markets and producers. Looking for a crowd-pleasing recipe? Check out our makeover of Emeril Lagasse's Spanish Meatballs.

Tip Number 9: A Local Cheese Board

Who doesn't love a selection of fine cheeses to accompany an organic wine? Make your way to your local farmer's market and sample the different cheeses on offer. Choose three to five selections and pair your cheeseboard with organic fresh fruit, unsweetened and sulphur dioxide-free dried fruit, and fiber-rich nuts. Yum.

Tip Number 10: Give Creative Holiday Favors

Send your guests home with better-for-you party favors. Some of our top picks?

  • Organic dark raw chocolate from a local chocolatier. We love Nibmor Chocolates -- try their drinking chocolate in particular.
  • A piece of fruit tied with a bow.
  • Homemade organic preserves or chutney.
  • Local organic raw honey.
  • Homemade baked goods made with natural sweetener.
  • A handmade ornament.

... and, of course, the 2012 edition of Clean Plates Manhattan or Clean Plates Brooklyn!

Tebow throws 2 pick-6s

QB intercepted 4 times as Denver falls into tie with Oakland top AFC West

The Bills' Spencer Johnson (91) celebrates his touchdown after intercepting a pass from Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

By JOHN WAWROW

updated 6:52 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Tim Tebow picked a terrible time to run out of fourth-quarter comebacks.

Rather than inspiring the Denver Broncos to another dramatic rally, the quarterback sealed the most dreadful performance of his two-year career by throwing four interceptions - all in the second half and two returned for touchdowns 18 seconds apart - in a 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

It happened as the Broncos (8-7) had a chance to inch closer to clinching their first playoff berth in six years, and against a Bills team that was coming off seven straight losses and had little to play for.

"My confidence is just fine," Tebow said. "I have to do a better job of not giving them opportunities. I tried to make something happen, and I tried to force it."

Denver coach John Fox hasn't lost faith in Tebow.

"I just think a couple of misreads," Fox said.

And no, he gave no thought of pulling Tebow at any point during a second half in which four of the Broncos' final six possessions ended with interceptions.

On the bright side, Denver's not done yet, despite falling into a tie with Oakland atop the AFC West. Denver closes its season by hosting the Kansas City Chiefs next week, and still holds the tiebreaker edge over the Raiders.

"Everything is still on the table," Tebow said. "We have to go and execute and play a little better. Hopefully, we can get in the tournament."

Tebow finished 13 of 30 for 185 yards with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Fells. He added 34 yards rushing, and scored on a 1-yard plunge.

That wasn't nearly good enough for a player who entered the game best known for engineering five fourth-quarter comebacks this season.

The Bills (6-9) made sure he never got in position for a sixth in coming away with a win in their home finale.

Safety Jairus Byrd and linebacker Spencer Johnson scored on interception returns 18 seconds apart midway through the fourth quarter. C.J. Spiller rushed for a career-best 111 yards and a touchdown, and Leodis McKelvin scored on an 80-yard punt return.

"It's special," Johnson said. "We had a monkey on our back for a long time."

Added safety George Wilson: "It's a great reward for the resilience, commitment and dedication."

The Bills' four interceptions were two more than they managed in their previous seven games. They have returned five interceptions for touchdowns to set a single-season franchise record.

If the game wasn't over with 8:03 left when Byrd jumped in front of Tebow's pass intended for Eric Decker up the left hash mark and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown, then it certainly was decided on the Broncos' next play from scrimmage.

Tebow was flushed from the pocket and was scrambling to his left when linebacker Chris Kelsay dived from behind and batted the ball out of the quarterback's hand. The ball flew into the air and landed in the hands of Johnson, who ran it in from 17 yards.

Kelsay, the longest-serving member of the defense, had two sacks and led the team with nine tackles.

"We've lost seven games in a row. It wears on you," Kelsay said. "We got rewarded. We came together and we executed."

After weeks of assertive defense, the Broncos gave up 40 points for a second straight game - though Tebow's giveaways certainly didn't help. And yet Denver allowed 160 yards rushing and 351 yards in all to a banged-up Bills offense that was averaging 14.2 points and 314.7 yards during its seven-game skid.

While Tebow was struggling, Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick enjoyed his most efficient game in two months by going 15 of 27 for 196 yards with no interceptions. Fitzpatrick entered the game taking plenty of heat during the seven-game skid, in which he threw eight touchdowns versus 12 interceptions.

Dave Rayner shook off two missed field-goal attempts - and a booing crowd - to hit his final four, all from within 29 yards.

"I'm glad that Coach stuck with me," Rayner said. "I'm glad that we got opportunities, because I never want to leave a game going oh-fer."

Except for scoring touchdowns on their first possession of each half, nothing went right for the Broncos.

They went nowhere in the first half after Tebow capped a 73-yard opening drive with a 1-yard run. Denver managed just 21 yards and no first downs on its final six possessions, including a kneeldown in the final seconds.

They finished converting just two of 13 third-down chances and Tebow had four of his final six drives end with interceptions.

NOTES: After McKelvin scored, Denver's Eddie Royal returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, but it was negated by a block in the back penalty against Dante Rosario. ... Broncos RB Willis McGahee had 64 yards rushing to give him 1,054 this season. He became the second NFL player to reach 1,000 yards rushing with three teams. He previously did it with Buffalo and Baltimore. Ricky Watters rushed for 1,000 yards with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Seattle. ... The Bills finished 5-3 at home (including a win over Washington at Toronto), matching their best record since going 5-3 in 2004.

Negative ads mix with holiday cheer in Iowa (AP)

DAVENPORT, Iowa ? Iowa residents flipping their TV channels this season aren't finding a whole lot of Christmas cheer. A barrage of negative campaign ads is flooding the airwaves, with ghoulish images of Newt Gingrich and Nancy Pelosi crowding Santa and doomsday music drowning out holiday song.

Mitt Romney is likened to "big-government liberals." Gingrich is castigated for his "baggage." The still-volatile Republican presidential field means Iowans have two more weeks of this before the leadoff caucuses Jan. 3.

The onslaught of scalding ads and messages landing in voters' mailboxes, prompted in part by a Supreme Court decision last year that helped open the floodgates, has made the race for the 2012 GOP nomination among the most negative the state has ever seen. The campaign air war, slow to start at first, has intensified as the caucuses loom closer ? leaving observers to puzzle over its recent dark turn.

"The ads are more negative than they were in 2007," said Dianne Bystrom, a political communications professor at Iowa State University.

"In part it's the mood of the country, which has certainly darkened in the last 4 years," Bystrom said. "Some of the Republicans haven't spent a lot of time in the state, so they're communicating on television. And there's lots of third party ads this time that have really changed the dynamic."

That means Texas Gov. Rick Perry is slamming Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, for supporting an individual health care mandate that formed the basis of President Barack Obama's health care law. Ron Paul is complaining about "smooth-talking politicians" over video images of Gingrich, Romney and Obama. And a pro-Romney independent group, Restore Our Future, has unleashed a multimillion-dollar assault on Gingrich, effectively doing the former Massachusetts governor's dirty work while letting him float safely above the fray.

"Newt Gingrich has more baggage than the airlines," the group's new ad says, showing Gingrich pairing with Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, to fight climate change.

While attack ads are often effective, they can muddy the instigator as much as they wound the target. That's particularly true in a multicandidate field, where an attack on one candidate from another can actually benefit a third.

Such was the case in 2004, when Democrats Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt battled each other hard in Iowa. Another rival, John Kerry, took advantage of the fray and went on to win the caucuses that year.

As an officially independent group, Restore Our Future bears no mention of Romney's name ? protecting him to some degree from blowback. It is made up of former Romney advisers.

Gingrich, for his part, isn't ready to give Romney a pass. He addressed the risk to Romney at a campaign events in Iowa this week when asked about the impact of the group's ads.

"It reflects badly on other Republicans that they haven't got anything positive to say for themselves and they have to rely on their consultants trying to tear down a fellow Republican and they are in effect doing Barack Obama's work," Gingrich said Monday. "I think the average Republican's going to be very unhappy with Republicans whose entire campaign is negative."

He turned up the heat Tuesday.

"Understand, these are his people running his ads, doing his dirty work while he pretends to be above it," Gingrich said in Ottumwa, Iowa. "I don't object to being outspent. I object to lies. I object to negative smear campaigns."

Earlier Tuesday, Romney said in an appearance on MSNBC that super PACs have been "a disaster." But he refused to urge the group Restore Our Future to halt the attacks on Gingrich, saying that the law prohibits his campaign and such groups to coordinate.

"I'm not allowed to communicate with a super PAC in any way, shape or form," Romney said. "If we coordinate in any way whatsoever, we go to the big house."

A fired-up Gingrich, who has seen his candidacy slide amid a barrage of attack ads, read Romney's remarks to reporters and then promptly labeled them "baloney." He again urged Romney to demand that the negative spots be taken down.

"I think these guys hire consultants who get drunk, sit around and write stupid ads," Gingrich said. "Every one of these candidates should take responsibility for the lies they are putting up".

To be sure, not every candidate is blistering the airwaves.

Gingrich, for his part, is trying to make good on a campaign promise to stay positive in ads even though he's swiped indirectly at Romney. The former House speaker and his wife, Callista, are expected to appear in a campaign Christmas commercial in Iowa later this week.

Cash-strapped hopefuls Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum are focusing their limited resources on retail campaigning. Jon Huntsman has avoided Iowa in order to go all out n New Hampshire, which hosts the nation's first primary Jan. 10. Our Destiny, a super PAC supporting the former Utah governor, has run positive ads there for him.

By far the biggest jolt to the advertising landscape this time is the emergence of super PACs ? independent groups that can raise and spend unlimited money to support or attack a candidate.

Last year's landmark Supreme Court ruling easing campaign spending restrictions on corporations has brought forth a proliferation of such groups in Iowa. Restore Our Future, a super PAC, has been by far the most prolific, devoting its resources to painting Gingrich as a greedy, unethical hypocrite.

Make Us Great Again, a super PAC backing Perry, has also spent heavily on ads. Groups supporting Gingrich and Santorum have just started to go on the air.

Marty Kaplan, a political communications expert at the University of Southern California, said the negative attacks from both candidates and outside groups would all but certainly continue past Iowa.

"Negative ads work," Kaplan said. "They are compelling narratives with villains and twists that evoke emotion, and they do everything that Hollywood wants to happen to an audience."

iTunes Match rolls out to international community, makes music lovers flinch

Thought you'd have to wait until 2012 to snag an international iTunes Match account? Think again. It seems Apple ended its negotiations with British record companies earlier than expected, as the outfit prematurely launched the music matching service on Wednesday, pulled it and refunded early subscribers, and finally relaunched a fully functional Match to the international community on Thursday. Users from the UK, Australia, Canada, France, the Czech Republic and other countries are now reporting that the service is live, appearing in the iTunes Store and fully functional. If the US rollout was a little late, we certainly don't mind the international debuting a tad early.
