Pierson sworn in as first female director of Secret Service

Julia Pierson (Larry Downing/Reuters)Secret Service chief of staff Julia Pierson was sworn in Wednesday as the agency's new director following a tumultuous year for the agency, which, among other things, endured a prostitution scandal.

?I have to say that Julia?s reputation within the service is extraordinary, she?s come up through the ranks, she?s done just about every job there is to do at the Secret Service," Obama said at Pierson's swearing-in during an Oval Office ceremony, according to the White House pool report. "Obviously, she?s breaking the mold in terms of directors of the agency, and I think that people are all extraordinarily proud of her."

Pierson has over 30 years of experience at the Secret Service. She's worked as an agent, in human relations and in various leadership roles.

The agency is responsible for providing protection for the nation's political leaders?including the president?and investigating financial crimes.

Earlier Wednesday, White House principal deputy press secretary Joshua Earnest declined to link Pierson's gender to the reason she was picked for the position. At the White House briefing he told reporters that "the fact that she is the first woman to lead this agency is notable, and I think it's important, but it's not the reason she was chosen for the job. She was chosen for the job because she is the right person at the right time to lead this agency."

Earnest was responding to the suggestion that the president's appointment of Pierson as well as other women to positions of power in the administration was a message aimed at criticism that he was appointing only white men to top posts at the start of his second term. Earnest also declined to connect Pierson's gender and appointment to the Secret Service scandal.

The agency in 2012 was rocked by a scandal involving 13 male employees, some of whom brought prostitutes to their hotel rooms while in Colombia on a trip to protect the president.

Pierson served as chief of staff for previous Director Mark Sullivan, who retired in February after apologizing last year for the scandal and implementing changes within the agency designed to reform practices, the agency's culture and its reputation.

Weight Record for iPhone review

Weight Record for iPhone review

Weight Record for iPhone is an iPhone app that will help you keep track of your weight. It features a gorgeous interface with quick entry, BMI calculator, and the ability to record a voice memo with each entry.

To record a weight entry, you simply tap the giant weight button at the top of the screen, slide to the correct weight, and tap the button again. Below the weight, you can see your BMI and the amount of weight change since the previous day. Unfortunately, the weight change is only calculated for consecutive days and is not displayed if the time since last entry was more than one day.

Weight Record also allows users to record a voice memo with each entry. This is a unique feature for weight tracking apps, but it makes me wonder why there isn't the ability to add a text note as well.

At the bottom of the screen, there is a horizontal calendar that you can scroll through to look at past entries or submit an entry for a past date. In the middle of the screen, you can see your entries displayed as a graph. Unfortunately, this graph can only be viewed 7 days at a time

Rotating to landscape orientation will increase the number of days in the graph from 7 to 13 days, but again, the zoom cannot be altered.

At the top of the screen, there is a progress bar that represents your weight-loss progress. Pulling down on the little arrow will reveal your average weight change by day, week, and month, as well as display your start weight and goal weight.

One of the baffling things about Weight Record is that you cannot delete an entry. It's possible to change an entry, but I cannot figure out how to delete one. The description of Weight Record claims to include this ability, so if it's really there, it's definitely not intuitive.

The good

 • Beautiful interface
 • Simple setup
 • Create audio notes to keep track of diet changes or other events
 • Calculate your ideal weight
 • View your BMI
 • Set weight goals and monitor progress
 • Change weight from any day
 • Support for US and metric units
 • View your average weight loss/gain by day, week and month
 • Infinite Graph displays audio notes and overall loss/gain direction

The bad

 • Can't delete a weight entry (or I just can't figure out)
 • Can't zoom out graph and view by week, month, year, etc
 • Can't add text note with each entry, only voice memo
 • Weight change only displayed for consecutive days. I should calculate and display since previous entry. Some people only weigh themselves once a week and want to quickly know weight change since previous weigh-in.
 • No sync
 • No projections

The bottom line

Even though Weight Record is missing some features that I would love to see, especially when it comes to graphs, I really like this app. I'm a sucker for a pretty interface and that's how Weight Record grabbed my attention. It reminds me a bit of WeightBot and is now my go to weight-tracking app.

Samsung elects two new co-CEOs to go along with the one it already had

Samsung Electronics just announced it's switching to a multiple-CEO system, pushing up Presidents Boo-keun Yoon and JK Shin (who we just saw on stage at the Galaxy S 4 press conference) in recognition of their strong performance. Vice Chairman, Chairman of the Board of Directors and current CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon isn't leaving the position he attained last summer however, and will continue to oversee the company's component business. Meanwhile, Yoon will continue his job overseeing the consumer electronics division that makes TVs and appliances, while Shin runs the IT and mobile phone business. Letting each run their own ship seems like an odd move, however we suppose when you're raking in $8 billion+ in profits in a quarter, you can afford to try a few different things, and they're still looking up to Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee. Still, there was a time when each unit operating so independently was seen as a problem.

Obama to headline Democratic fundraiser in April

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will return to the campaign trail next month, heading to California for a pair of fundraisers for Democratic congressional candidates.

The April 3 events will kick off what is expected to be a robust effort by Obama to support Democrats in next year's midterm elections. For Obama, winning back Democratic control of the House of Representatives and holding his party's majority in the Senate in 2014 would give him more opportunities to pass legislation Republicans oppose.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will also attend next month's San Francisco fundraisers, according to an invitation obtained by The Associated Press. The two events will raise money for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Congressional Republicans have criticized Obama for being more focused on getting Democrats elected than on seeking bipartisan solutions to the nation's problems. Obama sought to dispel that notion this week during private meetings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, though he is unlikely to have changed many minds ? particularly given that he has made no secret of his desire to see Democrats overtake Republicans in the House.

"I would expect that Nancy Pelosi is going to be Speaker again pretty soon," he told House Democrats during their party retreat last month.

Democratic officials have said the president plans to headline at least 14 fundraisers this year for the party's House and Senate candidates. Some of the events will be in Washington, but most will be held around the country.

Vice President Joe Biden and first lady Michelle Obama are also expected to hold campaign events for Democrats in the coming months.

During Obama's first term, some Democrats griped that the president didn't do enough to help the party's congressional candidates, particularly ahead of the 2010 midterms. Those elections saw Republicans win control of the House, an advantage they have used to stymie Obama's agenda.

Researchers map out an alternative energy future for New York

Mar. 12, 2013 ? New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will soon decide whether to approve hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in the state. To date, no alternative to expanded gas drilling has been proposed.

But a new study finds that it is technically and economically feasible to convert New York's all-purpose energy infrastructure to one powered by wind, water and sunlight (WWS). The plan, scheduled for publication in the journal Energy Policy, shows the way to a sustainable, inexpensive and reliable energy supply that creates local jobs and saves the state billions of dollars in pollution-related costs.

Mark Z. Jacobson, a senior fellow with the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy, co-authored the study with scientists from Cornell University and the University of California-Davis.

"Converting to wind, water and sunlight is feasible, will stabilize costs of energy and will produce jobs while reducing health and climate damage," said Jacobson, a professor of civil and environmental engineering.

The study is the first to develop a plan to fulfill all of a state's transportation, electric power, industry, and heating and cooling energy needs with renewable energy, and to calculate the number of new devices and jobs created, amount of land and ocean areas required, and policies needed for such an infrastructure change. It also provides new calculations of air pollution mortality and morbidity impacts and costs based on multiple years of air quality data.

The study concludes that while a WWS conversion may result in initial capital cost increases, such as the cost of building renewable energy power plants, these costs would be more than made up for over time by the elimination of fuel costs. The overall switch would reduce New York's end-use power demand by about 37 percent and stabilize energy prices, since fuel costs would be zero, according to the study. It would also create a net gain in manufacturing, installation and technology jobs because nearly all the state's energy would be produced within the state.

According to the researchers' calculations, New York's 2030 power demand for all sectors (electricity, transportation, heating/cooling, industry) could be met by:

 • 4,020 onshore 5-megawatt wind turbines
 • 12,770 offshore 5-megawatt wind turbines
 • 387 100-megawatt concentrated solar plants
 • 828 50-megawatt photovoltaic power plants
 • 5 million 5-kilowatt residential rooftop photovoltaic systems
 • 500,000 100-kilowatt commercial/government rooftop photovoltaic systems
 • 36 100-megawatt geothermal plants
 • 1,910 0.75-megawatt wave devices
 • 2,600 1-megawatt tidal turbines
 • 7 1,300-megawatt hydroelectric power plants, of which most exist

According to the study, if New York switched to WWS, air pollution-related deaths would decline by about 4,000 annually and the state would save about $33 billion -- 3 percent of the state's gross domestic product -- in related health costs every year. That savings alone would pay for the new power infrastructure needed within about 17 years, or about 10 years if annual electricity sales are accounted for. The study also estimates that resultant emissions decreases would reduce 2050 U.S. climate change costs -- such as coastal erosion and extreme weather damage -- by about $3.2 billion per year.

Currently, almost all of New York's energy comes from imported oil, coal and gas. Under the plan that Jacobson and his fellow researchers advance, 40 percent of the state's energy would come from local wind power, 38 percent from local solar and the remainder from a combination of hydroelectric, geothermal, tidal and wave energy.

All vehicles would run on battery-electric power and/or hydrogen fuel cells. Electricity-powered air- and ground-source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, heat exchangers and backup electric resistance heaters would replace natural gas and oil for home heating and air-conditioning. Air- and ground-source heat pump water heaters powered by electricity and solar hot water preheaters would provide hot water for homes. High temperatures for industrial processes would be obtained with electricity and hydrogen combustion.

"We must be ambitious if we want to promote energy independence and curb global warming," said study co-author Robert Howarth, a Cornell University professor of ecology and environmental biology. "The economics of this plan make sense," said Anthony Ingraffea, a Cornell engineering professor and a co-author of the study. "Now it is up to the political sphere."

To ensure grid reliability, the plan outlines several methods to match renewable energy supply with demand and to smooth out the variability of WWS resources. These include a grid management system to shift times of demand to better match with timing of power supply, and "over-sizing" peak generation capacity to minimize times when available power is less than demand.

Can Dunkin' Donuts Really Turn Its Palm Oil Green?

Dunkin Donuts plans to go green by committing to purchasing all their palm oil from sustainable sources.

Dunkin Donuts plans to go green by committing to purchasing all their palm oil from sustainable sources.

Andrew Huff/via Flickr

Dunkin' Donuts is changing its recipes ? though you may not notice much difference the next time you bite into a cruller. In response to pressure from one of New York's top elected officials, the company recently announced that it will set a goal of using only 100 percent sustainable palm oil in making its donuts.

The change is the result of a campaign by New York state comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, who oversees the state's public pension fund. He's also a critic of palm oil, which is often used for frying donuts. It's harvested mainly in Asia, and its production has caused serious deforestation, which releases carbon, in Malaysia and especially in Indonesia. By 2020, Indonesia's greenhouse gas emissions from palm oil production could top the national emissions of Canada, according to a study released last fall by researchers at Yale and Stanford.

"The destruction of those rainforests in that area is going to have an impact on the climate issue," DiNapoli says.

Unlike his fellow donut eaters, DiNapoli was actually in a position to do something about this. As state comptroller, he's also the sole trustee of the Common Retirement Fund, the third biggest pension fund in the nation, which holds more than 50,000 shares of Dunkin' Donuts company stock. So DiNapoli offered a shareholder resolution spelling out his concern, and Dunkin' pledged to go sustainable.

This palm oil mill uses energy produced by palm oil waste. It sits in one of the concession areas run by palm oil giant PT SMART (Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology) in West Kalimantan province on the Indonesian island of Borneo.

Romeo Gacad/AFP/Getty Images

Laurel Sutherlin, from the Rainforest Action Network, applauds the move. But as she notes, Dunkin' Donuts has yet to reveal just how it will fulfill its pledge to go green with

In the years ahead, Dunkin' will have to show it's not contributing to the destruction of rainforest. Sutherlin says many more companies ought to follow Dunkin's lead.

"In a grocery store that you walk into in the United States or Europe today," she says, "over half of the packaged goods contain palm oil. So it's used for everything from cookies to laundry detergents."

But why has demand for palm oil surged? It's not particularly delicious ? in fact, palm oil doesn't have much flavor at all, according to Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University. What it does have is a soft yet thick texture.

"And so it's very useful for products like Oreo cookies that have a filling," says Nestle, "so that you can put this oil in the filling and it stays solid at room temperature and doesn't run."

In the old days, hydrogenated oils ? so called trans fats ? did this job. But in 2007, another New York politician ? New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg - banned trans fats in restaurants. Nestle says many popular food brands ? including Oreo and Dunkin' Donuts ? voluntarily replaced trans fats with the best available substitute: palm oil.

"It's quite ironic," says Nestle.

Or maybe just the law of unintended consequences. One reason for the palm oil boom and the felling of ancient rainforests could be a mayor who only wanted to make his city healthier.

Meanwhile, DiNapoli says he's not done with palm oil yet. He's planning new shareholder resolutions, but won't say what company he's targeting next.

(AP) ? They partied like it was 1999 ? the audience and the musicians ? at a Prince tribute concert at Carnegie Hall.

More than 20 performers including Elvis Costello, The Roots and the Waterboys paid tribute to the pop icon in a two-hour-plus concert Thursday night. They all joined together onstage to close the show with "1999."

Singer D'Angelo took the lead while putting his arm around Bettye LaVette, Chris Rock and Costello clapped hands side-by-side, and comedians-actresses-singers Maya Rudolph and Sandra Bernhard danced in a silly manner ? all while the crowd cheered on.

Many of the performers got into character as they sang signature Prince tunes. Soul singer Bilal was wild on "Sister," singing in various tones like a mad man and thrilling the crowd. Bernhard, in her leather pants, shimmery shirt and shiny shoes, impressed on "Little Red Corvette" as she skipped around onstage and belted high notes. And singer-songwriter Kat Edmonson captured the audience with "The Beautiful Ones," standing still and singing with only a pianist onstage.

It was one of the only times The Roots weren't backing up other performers throughout the concert, which raised $100,000 for music education programs.

Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson jammed on the drums and even took photos of a pregnant Rudolph when she danced with one hand on her belly and the other stroking her hair. Rudolph, who sings Prince covers under the moniker PRINCEss with Gretchen Lieberum, screeched on "Darling Nikki" and didn't slow down while performing choreography in heels.

Few words were said to the audience, though Rock thanked the crowd "for coming" toward the end of the show.

He impersonated Prince, too, when reciting the lyrics to "If I Was Your Girlfriend" with sass. Comedian-actor Fred Armisen took on many roles: He recited lyrics from "Let's Go Crazy," played the drums while the Blind Boys of Alabama sang "The Cross" and offered light vocals during "It's Going to Be a Beautiful Night" alongside D'Angelo.

Most of the musicians wore black onstage, though LaVette rocked a purple blazer while singing "Kiss." Other performers included Eric Leeds, Nina Persson and Talib Kweli. Husband-and-wife Citizen Cope and Alice Smith sang a duet version of "Pop Life" and Booker T. Jones was joined by singer Diane Birch and members of the Young Audiences New York Youth Choir for "Raspberry Beret."

(AP) ? The leading candidate in Kenya's presidential election, Uhuru Kenyatta, saw his percentage of the vote yo-yo around the crucial 50 percent mark as results came in Friday. As night fell, however, it appeared increasingly likely he would win a majority and avoid a run-off.

A win by Kenyatta win could greatly affect Kenya's relations with the West because the candidate faces charges at the International Criminal Court for his alleged role in directing some of Kenya's 2007 postelection violence. The U.S. and other nations may scale back ties to the East African nation if he becomes president.

The latest tally late Friday showed Kenyatta, the deputy prime minister, with 51.3 percent of the vote with 91 percent of voting locations tabulated. Kenyatta bounced above and below 50 percent most of Friday afternoon and evening as the election commission updated returns.

Electoral expert Tom Wolf, a research analyst with the polling firm Ipsos Synovate, told The Associated Press that the late votes coming in from Kenya's Rift Valley are a "very abundant vote basket" for Kenyatta. His running mate, William Ruto, who faces similar ICC charges, is from the Rift.

"On a scale of zero to 10, it seems to be about a seven or eight that he'll probably just get over" the 50 percent mark, said Wolf. "I would be a little bit more surprised if he didn't get over 50 than if he did, but neither one on the face of it would be a complete surprise."

The other leading candidate is Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Odinga's campaign manager, Eliud Owalo, told AP late Friday that the prime minister's team believes there will be a run-off. If Odinga loses, his camp will likely launch a legal challenge. Odinga had about 42.5 percent of the vote as of the late Friday tally.

Despite the Odinga optimism, a Western election observer said the international community was forming a consensus around the belief Kenyatta was likely to win outright. The observer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss internal diplomatic talks.

There was also a belief that Odinga was not likely to protest the vote in a manner that would increase the chances of violence, the observer said, but rather honor his pledge to respect the result and petition the courts with any grievances.

The election commission announced late Friday afternoon it intended to finish the counting process by the end of the day, but as dark descended on Nairobi, some observers wondered if the panel would be willing to announce the results at night, when security forces would face a more difficult challenge containing any outbreaks of violence.

The Kenyan capital has been sleepy since Monday's vote for president, the country's first election since its 2007 vote sparked tribe-on-tribe violence that killed more than 1,000 people. But security forces in riot gear took to the streets Friday in regions of the city that could turn tumultuous after results are announced.

The prime minister's supporters took to the streets after Odinga in 2007 said he had been cheated. In Kibera, Nairobi's largest slum and a bastion of Odinga support, many believe this year's results have been rigged as well.

"If you look at the way the tallying is being done there is rigging," said Isiah Omondi, 27. "If Uhuru wins and wins fairly, we don't have a problem with him. He can be our president. But not like this."

The U.S. has warned of "consequences" if Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's founding father, wins, as have several European countries. Britain, which ruled Kenya up until the early 1960s, has said they would have only essential contact with the Kenyan government if Kenyatta was president.

The U.S. Embassy in Kenya is larger than any American mission in Africa, underscoring Kenya's strong role in U.S. foreign policy. The U.S. also has military forces stationed here near the border with Somalia. Kenya, the lynchpin of East Africa's economy, plays a vital security role in the fight against Somali militants.

Kenyatta's ICC trial is set to begin in July and could take years, meaning that if he wins he may have to rule Kenya from The Hague, Netherlands, for much of his five-year term. Another option is, as president, to decide not to attend the trial. But that decision would trigger an international arrest warrant and spark even more damaging effects for Kenya's standing with the West.

Kenyatta has promised to report to The Hague even if he wins the presidency. The ICC on Friday delayed the trial of Ruto until late May.

A pre-election voter survey from Ipsos showed Odinga getting 44.4 percent and Kenyatta getting 44.8 percent. That left 8 percent for the other six candidates and 2 percent for the undecided. Wolf said Kenyatta clearly won over some of that 10 percent to rise to the 50 percent mark.

In order to win outright, Kenyatta must not only get more than 50 percent of the vote but also must garner at least 25 percent of the vote in 24 out of Kenya's 47 provinces. Because of the way the election commission announced results, that was difficult to immediately determine.

Whether or not Kenyatta finishes with over half of the votes, most observers expected legal challenges to be launched after myriad failures in the systems Kenya's electoral commission set up.

For instance, an electronic voter ID system intended to prevent fraud failed across the country for lack of electricity in some cases and overheating computers in others. Vote officials instead used manual voter rolls.

After the polls closed, results were to be sent electronically to Nairobi, where officials would quickly tabulate a preliminary vote count in order to maximize transparency after rigging accusations following the 2007 vote. But that system failed, too. Election officials have indicated that computer servers overloaded but have yet to fully explain the problem.

On Tuesday, as the early count system was still being used, election results showed more than 330,000 rejected ballots, an unusually high number. But after the count resumed with the arrival in Nairobi of manual tallies, the number of rejected ballots were greatly reduced, and the election commission on Thursday gave the head-scratching explanation that the computer was mistakenly multiplying the number of rejected ballots by a factor of eight.

Odinga's camp on Thursday said some votes had been doctored and called for a halt to the tallying process, saying it "lacked integrity." A day earlier, Kenyatta's camp accused the British high commissioner of meddling in the election and asked aloud why there were an unusually high number of British troops in the country.

The election commission has denied any of the results have been altered.

There were fears going into the election that the violence that rocked Kenya five years ago would return. A separatist group on the coast launched attacks on Monday that ended in the deaths of 19 people, but the vote and its aftermath has otherwise been largely peaceful.

But it's the announcement of results that could stir protests, especially if the supporters of either camp feel robbed.

The political battle between the families of Kenyatta and Odinga goes back to the 1960s and to the two candidates' fathers. Jomo Kenyatta was Kenya's first president after the end of British colonial rule. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga served as the country's first vice president then. The two later had a falling out.

If a runoff is declared, it would be most likely held in late April, depending on how long legal challenges take.

'More than 25% of e-commerce traffic will come from mobile' | Firstpost

New Delhi: E-retailing firm HomeShop18 pegs mobile commerce to contribute more than 25 percent of the total traffic in e-commerce (online shopping) by 2015.

?In the next three years mobile commerce will constitute more than 25 percent of the total traffic in e-retailing,? HomeShop18 CEO and founder Sundeep Malhotra told PTI. Elaborating his statement, he added India has about 800 million mobile connections and is growing at 25 percent year-on-year (y-o-y).

AFP

Besides, independent experts pegged e-commerce segment to have doubled to about $14 billion in 2012 . AFP

?It is the second most mobile-populated country globally. I understand there are about some 60-70 million smartphones and they are growing at around 150 percent y-o-y and why because their prices have come down,? Malhotra noted. According to a report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB, India is expected to have close to 165 million mobile Internet users by March 2014, up from 87.1 million in December 2012 as more people are accessing the web through mobile devices and dongles.

Besides, independent experts pegged e-commerce segment to have doubled to about $14 billion in 2012 from $6.3 billion in 2011, fuelling more investments from e-commerce firms to step up their presence in this segment.

Experts estimate that e-commerce companies in India raised over $500 million (about Rs 2,743.3 crore) in 2012. Malhotra said HomeShop18 is prepared to serve the rising demand for m-commerce in the country. ?In the last one year a lot of people have started using smartphones to search. These categories are now limited like google search for restaurants or movie ticket. But they will move up the value chain in some time,? he said.

So for HomeShop18 to be available on handsets and utilise it to complete its entire e-retailing business was critical, he added. ?So far we have launched two apps for i-phone and android, we also launched a website to enable smartphone users to surf over 14 million products on our website and we also came out with a our own app for a live HomeShop18 TV channel for smartphone users,? he said.

The company recently launched a ?Scan N Shop?, India?s first virtual shopping wall, at T3 Terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport in the national capital, he said. ?We were the first to come out with shopping experience on television four years back and if we go by the latest TAM data, HomeShop18 is now in about 50 million households. Then, two years ago we launched our website, which gets around 5.5 million unique visitors every month,? Malhotra said.

New clues to causes of peripheral nerve damage

Mar. 6, 2013 ? Anyone whose hand or foot has "fallen asleep" has an idea of the numbness and tingling often experienced by people with peripheral nerve damage. The condition also can cause a range of other symptoms, including unrelenting pain, stinging, burning, itching and sensitivity to touch.

Although peripheral neuropathies afflict some 20 million Americans, their underlying causes are not completely understood. Much research has focused on the breakdown of cellular energy factories in nerve cells as a contributing factor.

Now, new research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis points to a more central role in damage to energy factories in other cells: Schwann cells, which grow alongside neurons and enable nerve signals to travel from the spinal cord to the tips of the fingers and toes.

The finding may lead to new therapeutic strategies to more effectively treat symptoms of this highly variable disorder, the scientists report March 6 in the journal Neuron.

"We found that a toxic substance builds up in Schwann cells that have disabled energy factories, leading to the same kind of nerve damage seen in patients with neuropathies," says senior author Jeffrey Milbrandt, MD, PhD, the James S. McDonnell Professor of Genetics and head of the Department of Genetics. "Now, we're evaluating whether drugs can block the buildup of that toxin, which could lead to a new treatment for the condition."

The most common cause of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes, which accounts for about half of all cases. The condition also can occur in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy, which can damage nerves.

In the body, Schwann cells wrap tightly around nerve axons, the fibers that relay nerve signals. Graduate student and first author Andreu Viader and colleagues in Milbrandt's lab studied Schwann cells in mice with genetically disabled mitochondria, or cellular energy factories. Under normal conditions, these mitochondria produce fuel and intermediates of energy metabolism that allow nerve cells to function.

The researchers showed that the crippled mitochondria activated a stress response in the Schwann cells. Instead of synthesizing fatty acids, a key component of Schwann cells, the cells burned fatty acids for fuel.

Over time, inefficient burning of fatty acids by the crippled mitochondria leads to a build up of acylcarnitines, a toxic substance, in the Schwann cells. The researchers found levels of acylcarnitines up to 100-fold higher in these mutant Schwann cells than in healthy Schwann cells.

And the bad news doesn't end there. Eventually, the toxin leaks out of the Schwann cells and onto the nerve axons. Studying neurons in petri dishes, the researchers showed that acylcarnitines damage nerve axons and disrupt the ability of nerves to relay signals.

"The toxin leaking out of the Schwann cells and onto the adjacent nerve axons causes damage that results in pain, numbness, tingling and other symptoms," Milbrandt says. "We think that is a likely mechanism to explain the degeneration of axons that is known to occur in peripheral neuropathies."

The new research suggests that drugs that inhibit the buildup of acylcarnitines may block axonal degeneration. Milbrandt and his team now are evaluating the drugs in mice with disabled Schwann cells to see if they can slow or alleviate the decay of axons.

The research is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Neuroscience Blueprint Center Core Grant (P30 NS057105), the HOPE Center for Neurological Disorders and the National Institutes of Health (AG13730 and PPG 2P01 HL057278).

Why people cry at weddings? | Fastforwardtherapies's Blog

IMG_0439
I?m writing today?s blog in sunshine as the warm rays of light stream through my window on to my desk? This is a welcome experience, as I have just recently returned to France from a 10 day visit in the UK for my daughters wedding. A sharp reminder for me (that is if I needed any) that winter in the UK is far colder due to the fact that there is so much moisture in the air (I guess its because it is essentially an island) and it is this dampness that cuts to the bone?
I thoroughly enjoyed the wedding and my daughter looked stunning. It was a beautiful day and even the sun shone on what started out as a damp February morning. The venue was idyllic and the ceremony moving and poignant.
When friends ask me how it all went, nearly all of them added ?and did you cry?? A not so strange question as it seems that although considered a joyous and happy occasion, there is nothing quite like a wedding to turn the teardrop taps on, as most seemingly ?normal? people start sniffling into their hankies.
Weddings in general are such an emotional time in more ways than one, particularly for those close to the couple for all sorts of reasons. It?s not just about the additional stress of the preparations of the wedding and practicalities, (like what on earth am I going to wear); it is also about those unexpected emotions that arise from the occasion as well. As Mother of the Bride I was immensely proud of my daughter and felt great joy for her happiness, yet at the same time I was aware of a sense of loss, amazed at how quickly time had flown since I first held her in my arms as a baby to this moment when she was ?given away? to her new husband.
A wedding it seems, marks a time of change within the family dynamics? it?s a time when a dramatic change occurs in the relationship between a mother and her ?child? that feels irreversible! It is one of the most significant rites of passage in our culture. It marks the moment when you realise that your daughter has finally left the nest and won?t count on you as she did before and this can lend itself to a feeling of redundancy and disempowerment.
I am reminded however, that this is not the first time I had felt this way. In fact when I look back I can recall a lifetime of ?separations? in our relationship as mother and daughter. I suppose it starts initially at birth. The physical pain of giving birth and the separation of your child from your body stir up a whole gamut of emotions, Then there are those first steps as your child explores the world stretching out for independence and there is that first day at playgroup or nursery class when you are not there, and subsequently that first day of school when you wonder what on earth you will do with your day. Their movements away continue as they grow and develop (as they rightly should) leaving you to adjust your life to each stage as they become adults.
The changes although seem to have passed quickly when you look back, are subtle and gradual and take place almost without you realising them, and it is only when we are faced with a ceremony or ritual (like a wedding for example) that we actually come face to face with the fact that life will never be the same again and it can be quite scary.
The important thing is to remember is that these emotions (even though they can be quite conflicting) are normal and necessary as part of the adjustment process. The best thing is to acknowledge these feelings and not push them away (for they will only come back and haunt you again and again). Your emotions are telling you something important and shouldn?t be ignored, so it is often helpful to take time out to explore your feelings, and understand them and they will help you move on. Meeting with a therapist, counsellor or life coach can be immensely beneficial in helping you work through these transitional times at it offers you a safe environment whereby you can express yourself without judgement or fear. If you find yourself in a place today where you feel a sense of loss or even uncertainty about the changes in your life, remember you don?t have to struggle alone? send me an email and we walk through it together.

Syria says uncovers Israeli spy equipment near coast

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria said on Thursday it had uncovered an Israeli spy camera monitoring a "sensitive site" on its Mediterranean coast.

State television showed pictures of what it said was a camera, six large batteries and transmission gear along with fake rocks used to camouflage the equipment.

It quoted an official source as saying the equipment was found in the last few days at a coastal location not specified, and that the discovery highlighted the role Israel had played in the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

It said the camera had relayed pictures in real time and had been used in the service of both Israel and "armed terrorist groups" - the label Syrian officials give to insurgents fighting to topple Assad.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said she was checking the report and made no further comment.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor would not comment on the report of the spy equipment, saying: "We will not be dragged into the Syrian civil war. Not on the verbal or propaganda battlefield, nor on the real one."

The equipment shown on Syrian television - and the artificial rocks used to disguise it - closely resembled items seized in Lebanon in recent years that Lebanese authorities said were also used by Israel to monitor movements inside Lebanon.

Syria is engulfed in a civil war which the United Nations says has killed 70,000 people and erupted nearly two years ago with initially peaceful protests against Assad.

Facebook?s Focus On Mobile-Inspired Consistency Is All About Getting Facebook ?Out Of The Way?

photo-2Today, VP of Product, Chris Cox discussed Facebook’s new-found focus on design consistency, something the company calls “mobile-inspired.” Today, with its News Feed and Photo redesign, you’ll notice consistency no matter what device you’re on. This hasn’t always been the case for Facebook. The idea of “desktop only” design seems to be dead, at least at Facebook HQ in Menlo Park. It’s all about mobile. What does that mean exactly? It means a more intimate experience, more responsive to touch and clicks, and way less clutter. “Now you can get to any page on Facebook to any other page on Facebook without going to your home page” said Cox. The best designers in the world say that to make people engage with a product, you have to make the “tech” disappear. That is of course done with beautiful and responsive design, and that’s the approach that Facebook is taking. One example of why Facebook had to take this approach is that Cox said 35% of Facebook users on the web never see the chat bar on the right hand side because of their browser width, so the company was missing out on a lot of message traffic because of that. The new responsive web design will fix that. These changes will roll out on the web today and then to mobile devices in the coming months. The roll out will be very slow, to make sure that the company gets incremental feedback. The rallying cry for the day at Facebook? “Goodbye Clutter.” Ads weren’t discussed at all, which is where I find that most of the clutter is. It will be interesting to see how advertisements evolve with this new design, and if we’ll see more of them. The definition of “clutter” is subjective, so we’ll see if Facebook’s definition will delight its over one billion users. Here’s a video explaining some of the reasons behind the changes:

(AP) ? Mark Teixeira will to be out at least until early May with a strained right wrist tendon, the latest major injury setback for the New York Yankees.

New York general manager Brian Cashman gave the news Wednesday after the Yankees' were beat 8-2 by the Dominican Republic World Baseball Classic team on Wednesday.

"It's a tough loss," Cashman said.

Teixeira was hurt swinging a bat Tuesday in an indoor cage during pregame warmups with the U.S. WBC team. Initially, Teixeira was expected to be out eight to 10 days, but he was examined by Yankees doctors in New York on Wednesday and a prognosis of eight to 10 weeks was given.

Cashman, who broke his leg and dislocated his ankle in a skydiving accident Monday, says Teixeira will rest for four weeks before beginning rehabilitation. Teixeira will remain in New York, and not rejoin the team in Florida, to start his recovery program.

Cashman does not seem inclined to move Kevin Youkilis from third to first. Youkilis was signed in December to fill in for third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who will be out until at least the All-Star break after left hip surgery in January.

"Third base is very difficult," Cashman said. "First is always easier to fill than third."

Internal options at first include Dan Johnson. Cashman ruled out having designated hitter Travis Hafner playing in the field.

"We've got three or more weeks to go with what we have here, as well as evaluating what's elsewhere," Cashman said. "So, we'll just wait and see."

Cashman noted that this is normally not the time of year that big trades are made.

It's the second major injury for the Yankees during spring training this year. Outfielder Curtis Granderson broke his right forearm when he was hit by a pitch Feb. 24. He will also be sidelined until early May.

"People get hurt ... get hurt on our team, people get hurt on other teams," Yankees captain Derek Jeter said. "The good teams find ways to get it done, and that's what you're going to have to do."

Jeter is making progress toward playing in his first game since offseason ankle surgery. Although he has not run the bases full speed yet, Jeter went through an intensive defensive session Wednesday.

"I'm getting close," Jeter said. "I'm headed in the right direction. My ankle feels good. I'll be in there as soon as I can play. Whenever I'm able to do it, I'll do it."

Jeter expects to be ready for the regular-season opener April 1 against Boston.

"I'm not worried about Derek Jeter at all," Cashman said. "He'll be ready when it counts. He's the least of our concerns."

Granderson has been cleared to increase his workouts and is set to start riding a stationary bike. Granderson said the team medical staff was happy with follow-up X-rays taken on Tuesday.

Right-hander Phil Hughes made 25 throws at both 60 and 90 feet during his third level ground throwing session after being sidelined two weeks by an upper back bulging disk. He is scheduled to make 10 pitches in his first mound session Saturday, and have a 25-pitch bullpen outing Sunday or Monday.

Hughes' status for opening day remains undetermined.

Reliever David Robertson, scratched from his outing Tuesday night due to an achy shoulder, will not make a two-day road trip Thursday and Friday. Left-hander Boone Logan, slowed by a tender elbow, expects to pay catch Thursday and throw off a mound this weekend.

CC Sabathia, the expected opening-day starter, and closer Mariano Rivera, have both been taking part in simulated games.

Sabathia, who had offseason left elbow bone spur surgery, is scheduled for another sim game Sunday. Rivera, coming back from knee surgery, could pitch in his first game Saturday.

Cashman said Rivera has returned home for a personal matter, and will rejoin the team Saturday.
