FreedomPop offering 1GB of free wireless data, hopes you?ll pay for more

The new freemium 4G service could be perfect for those wanting to dip their toes into the mobile data market

Sick of?paying out the nose for wireless data? Well, one enterprising startup may have an option for you:?FreedomPop, a wireless service set to roll out in July and September, wants to offer you 1GB worth of 4G WiMAX and?LTE wireless data service absolutely free.

The service operates on a "freemium" basis ? certain aspects, like the 1GB of data, are free.? If you go over the 1GB allotment, you will be charged a fee estimated to be in the range of 1 cent per megabyte. You can also pay for more data in advance, and features will exist where you can share some free data with other users.

FreedomPop will offer three different flavors of broadband: a USB dongle that allows you to connect your computer to the internet, a WiFi hotspot device, and an iPhone case that allows you to override the phone's existing network and use it as a FreedomPop hotspot. All three will require you pay a refundable deposit.

While FreedomPop isn't the first company to try a free wireless data model ? you can currently get?free service from NetZero ? they are the first to up the ante to offer 1GB for free. There are some major drawbacks, however. FreedomPop will be using?Clearwire's network, so the range of the free wireless service will be limited to the 70 major cities currently serviced. Still, if you're interested in giving the freemium service a whirl (and live in or near a major city), you can pre-register for FreedomPop?on their website.

Mathematics is a vital tool for understanding the world and in the fall of 2012 a new museum will invite the public to experience the power and wonders of mathematics, with an emphasis on activities that are creative, surprising and fun. On Friday, April 13, 2012, George Hart, chief of content for the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath), will offer a visual preview of the engaging exhibits planned for the museum, to be located in midtown Manhattan. The public is invited to the free lecture set for 11:30 a.m. 1 p.m. in the Campus Center Atrium, which is located on the ground floor of the NJIT Campus Center at Central Ave. and Summit St.

Prior to becoming involved with MoMath, Hart spent 10 years as a research professor in the computer science department at Stony Brook University in New York. He holds a BS in mathematics and a PhD in electrical engineering and computer science, both from MIT. He is the author of a linear algebra monograph, Multidimensional Analysis, and coauthor of Zome Geometry, an introductory exploration of the geometry of nature.

Hart is also a sculptor and puzzle designer interested in innovative ways to use computer technology in his artwork. His sculpture has been exhibited around the world and can be seen at http://georgehart.com. He is also very active in developing novel hands-on workshops as ways to communicate the richness and excitement of mathematics. His current focus is on designing what he hopes will become the "coolest museum anywhere."

Astronomers put forward new theory on size of black holes

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Astronomers have put forward a new theory about why black holes become so hugely massive ? claiming some of them have no 'table manners', and tip their 'food' directly into their mouths, eating more than one course simultaneously.

Researchers from the UK and Australia investigated how some black holes grow so fast that they are billions of times heavier than the sun.

The team from the University of Leicester (UK) and Monash University in Australia sought to establish how black holes got so big so fast. Their research is due to published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The research was funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Professor Andrew King from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leicester, said: "Almost every galaxy has an enormously massive black hole in its centre. Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, has one about four million times heavier than the sun. But some galaxies have black holes a thousand times heavier still. We know they grew very quickly after the Big Bang.''

"These hugely massive black holes were already full--grown when the universe was very young, less than a tenth of its present age."

Black holes grow by sucking in gas. This forms a disc around the hole and spirals in, but usually so slowly that the holes could not have grown to these huge masses in the entire age of the universe. `We needed a faster mechanism,' says Chris Nixon, also at Leicester, "so we wondered what would happen if gas came in from different directions."

Nixon, King and their colleague Daniel Price in Australia made a computer simulation of two gas discs orbiting a black hole at different angles. After a short time the discs spread and collide, and large amounts of gas fall into the hole. According to their calculations black holes can grow 1,000 times faster when this happens.

"If two guys ride motorbikes on a Wall of Death and they collide, they lose the centrifugal force holding them to the walls and fall," says King. The same thing happens to the gas in these discs, and it falls in towards the hole.

This may explain how these black holes got so big so fast. "We don't know exactly how gas flows inside galaxies in the early universe," said King, "but I think it is very promising that if the flows are chaotic it is very easy for the black hole to feed."

The two biggest black holes ever discovered are each about ten billion times bigger than the Sun.

Villagers: Afghan slayings were act of retaliation

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? Several Afghans near the villages where an American soldier is alleged to have killed 16 civilians say U.S. troops lined them up against a wall after a roadside bombing and told them that they, and even their children, would pay a price for the attack.

Residents have given similar accounts to both The Associated Press and to Afghan government officials about an alleged bombing in the vicinity, which they said occurred March 7 or 8, and left U.S. troops injured. The residents also said they are convinced that the slayings of the 16 villagers just days later was in retaliation for that bomb.

Although the villagers' accounts could not be independently confirmed, their claim that the shootings by a U.S. soldier may have been payback for a roadside bombing has gained wide currency in the area and has been repeated by politicians testifying about the incident to Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, 38, is suspected of leaving a U.S. base in Panjwai district, entering homes and gunning down nine children, four men and three women before dawn on March 11 in the villages of Balandi and Alkozai. Villagers said the earlier bombing occurred in Mokhoyan, a village about 500 yards (meters) east of the base.

A lawyer for Bales in the United States also suggested that Bales was motivated by a bombing in the area.

However, a spokesman for the U.S. military in Afghanistan declined to give any information on the bombing or even confirm that it occurred, citing the ongoing investigation into the shootings. He also declined to comment on the suggestions that U.S. troops had threatened villagers with retaliation.

"The shooting incident as well as any possibilities that led up to it or might be associated with it will be investigated," Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, the spokesman, said Tuesday.

One Mokhoyan resident, Ahmad Shah Khan, told The Associated Press that after the bombing, U.S. soldiers and their Afghan army counterparts arrived in his village and made many of the male villagers stand against a wall.

"It looked like they were going to shoot us, and I was very afraid," Khan said. "Then a NATO soldier said through his translator that even our children will pay for this. Now they have done it and taken their revenge."

Neighbors of Khan gave similar accounts to the AP, and several Afghan officials, including Kandahar lawmaker Abdul Rahim Ayubi, said people in the two villages that were attacked told them the same story.

Mohammad Sarwar Usmani, one of several lawmakers who went to the area, said the Afghan National Army had confirmed to him that an explosion occurred near Mokhoyan on March 8.

On March 13, Afghan soldier Abdul Salam showed an AP reporter the site of a blast that made a large crater in the road in Panjwai district of Kandahar province, where the shootings occurred. The soldier said the explosion occurred March 8. Salam said he helped gather men in the village, and that troops spoke to them, but he was not close enough to hear what they said.

Ghulam Rasool, a tribal elder from Panjwai district of Kandahar province, where the shootings occurred, gave an account of the bombing at a March 16 meeting in Kabul with President Hamid Karzai.

"After the incident, they took the wreckage of their destroyed tank and their wounded people from the area," Rasool said. "After that, they came back to the village nearby the explosion site.

"The soldiers called all the people to come out of their houses and from the mosque," he said.

"The Americans told the villagers, 'A bomb exploded on our vehicle. ... We will get revenge for this incident by killing at least 20 of your people,'" Rasool said. "These are the reasons why we say they took their revenge by killing women and children in the villages."

Bales' lawyer, John Henry Browne, has said that his client was upset because a buddy had lost a leg in an explosion on March 9. It's unclear if the bombing cited by Browne was the same as the one described by the villagers. After a meeting at a military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Browne said Bales told him a roadside bomb blew off the leg of one of his friends two days before the shootings occurred.

Karzai's investigative team is not convinced that one soldier could have single-handedly left his base, walked to the two villages, and carried out the killings and set fire to some of the victims' bodies. The U.S. military has said that even though its investigation is continuing, everything currently points to one shooter.

Villagers in Mokhoyan, meanwhile, are convinced that the shootings were a case of revenge.

Naek Mohammad, who lives in Mokhoyan, told the AP that he heard an explosion March 8 and went outside. As he and a neighbor talked about what happened, he said, two Afghan soldiers ordered them to join other men from the village who had been told to stand against a wall.

"One of the villagers asked what was happening," he said. "The Afghan army soldier told him, 'Shut up and stand there.'"

Mohammad said a U.S. soldier, speaking through a translator, then said: "I know you are all involved and you support the insurgents. So now, you will pay for it ? you and your children will pay for this.'"

None of the villagers could identify the soldier who they said issued the threat.

As I said in the intro, you can basically do what you want with the characters. I just laid out a basic framework that I thought would be the most amusing.

The Morning Wrap - The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times

Updated at 7:56 a.m.

Identified: U.S. military officials on Friday revealed that Staff Sgt. Robert Bales is the American solider accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers on March 11, The New York Times reports. The military didn't disclose his identity earlier over concerns for his and his family's safety. Authorities are holding Bales at a Fort Leavenworth, Kan., prison.

Groundbreaker: Legal experts are saying the conviction of former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi in a cyberbullying and harassment case broke new legal ground in New Jersey, The Star-Ledger reports. Ravi on Friday was convicted of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation stemming from his use of a webcam to spy on his roommate Tyler Clementi. The roommate jumped to his death from New York's George Washington Bridge after he realized that Ravi had watched his sexual encounter with another man. Legal experts said prosecuting an individual charged with a hate crime linked to an invasion of privacy charge, rather than a charge stemming from a violent crime like assault, set a new precedent.

Arrested: The U.S. Secret Service on Friday arrested actor George Clooney, Martin Luther King III, members of Congress and other activists outside the Sudan embassy in Washington, The Washington Post reports. They were demonstrating against the Sudanese hunger crisis, claiming that the country's president, Omar al-Bashir, kept humanitarian assistance and food away from thousands of his nation's people. Clooney was released from custody later that day.

Wage and Hour Litigation: The latest Federal Judicial Caseload Statistics show that the amount of wage and hour cases rose more than 15 percent between 2010 and 2011, Corporate Counsel reports. Most of the cases are collective actions.

Dead: John Demjanjuk, a retired U.S. autoworker who was convicted of being a Nazi death camp guard, died on Saturday at 91, The Associated Press reports. He had denied any participation in the in the Nazi Holocaust, saying he had been mistaken for someone else.

Afghan envoy sees bumps ahead in US relationship

(AP) ? Afghanistan's ambassador to the United States says his country is committed to a long-term partnership with the U.S., but the road ahead may be full of bumps.

The diplomat, Eklil Hakimi, says his government is an ally in the fight against terrorism and wants to make sure that terrorists cannot again use Afghanistan as a base to threaten the security of other countries.

But a series of incidents has severely strained ties with the U.S.

One was from the inadvertent burning of Qurans by U.S. soldiers. More recently, the war effort was driven to a new low by the killing of nine Afghan children and seven adults, allegedly by a U.S. soldier.

The ambassador tells CNN's "State of the Union" that Afghanistan is working to define its relationship with the U.S. for the years to come, and that's the big picture. But he acknowledges that "down the road, it's a bumpy road."

As for making sure the alleged shooter is brought to justice, Hakimi says "we trust the United States and we know how important this relationship is."

Michael Smerconish: Boycott Won't Rush Him Out

Though the advertising boycott of Rush Limbaugh is significant for its size and scope, it will ultimately prove ineffectual in dislodging him from his commanding perch above the talk-radio world. That kind of movement would require a different type of acquiescence, namely on the part of program directors, not advertisers. And though there is a strong case to be made for such a course correction, there are no guarantees those who determine content will stray from their current business model.

Last week, radio-trade columnist Tom Taylor reported that Limbaugh's syndicate (Premier Networks) was circulating a list of 98 advertisers that want to avoid "environments likely to stir negative sentiments." He said the advertisers had concerns that extended beyond Limbaugh:

"They've specifically asked that you schedule their commercials in... programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity). Those are defined as environments likely to stir negative sentiment from a very small percentage of the listening public."

The bible of the talk-radio trades, Talkers, then pointed out that "no controversial programming" dictates were common and practically as old as talk radio itself, and were not a specific reaction to the Limbaugh case -- although they are certainly reiterated as a result of it.

Still, the hosts identified constitute the starting rotation at many talk stations across the country. Their programs, strung together, amount to 15 or more straight hours of daily kicking the crap out of President Obama (whether he deserves it or not). The only diversity they offer is in their voice inflections.

Meanwhile, the nation seems poised for something more multidimensional. Jon Stewart nailed it when, at the Rally to Restore Sanity, he co-hosted with Steven Colbert in 2010, he proclaimed:

"Most Americans don't live their lives just as Democrats or Republicans, liberals or conservatives."

Stewart's observation is supported by lots of recent data, including:

An August 2011 Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey that found that 40 percent of Americans who responded said their general approach to the issues was "moderate."

A December 2011 analysis by USA Today that showed that, since the 2008 election, more than 2.5 million voters have left the Democratic and Republican Parties, while the number of independents has grown. Registered Democrats are in decline in 25 of the 28 states that register voters by party, and Republicans dipped in 21 states. Independents gained in 18.

In January, Gallup announced that the percentage of Americans identifying as political independents increased in 2011 to 40 percent, the highest Gallup has ever measured.

But "independents" are not a constituency cultivated by current talk radio. Instead, talk caters to the same small number of loyal conservatives whom Limbaugh first attracted after his syndication in 1988. He filled a void when he established a clubhouse for those who were being denied membership in more mainstream outlets.

Philadelphia was the last major market to welcome Limbaugh when he came aboard at WWDB-FM (96.5) in 1992. The station was then home to "Evil" Irv Homer, a libertarian before Ron Paul made it fashionable; Dominick Quinn, a conservative known more for his expansive vocabulary than his ideology; Frank Ford, an acerbic liberal; and Bernie Herman, whose moniker was the now seemingly anachronistic "gentleman of broadcasting." Personality was king, and sustaining a conversation was more important than talking points.

Limbaugh's success on radio led to polarizing imitations on cable TV. Politicians imitated what they saw and heard, and took the nation down with them.

Though the public eschews polarization, politicians pile it on. The National Journal documented in 2010 that the Senate was more divided than at any point in the three decades since it has been evaluating legislators' key votes. The Journal found that every Democrat had complied a voting record more liberal than every conservative, and every Republican had complied a voting record more conservative than every Democrat. And, no, the climate has not always been like this. According to the Journal, in the early 1980s, with Ronald Reagan as president, 60 percent of the Senate was somewhere in the middle. That's a reality Arlen Specter documents in his forthcoming book, Life Among the Cannibals.

So Congress wasn't always like this, and neither was talk radio. Coincidence? I think not. There are other factors, but the climate created in the media is one of them. Which is why it would be healthy for the country should the backlash against Limbaugh take hold.
