A Case For Relevancy in an Arguably Irrelevant Community ...

Maybe it's because I'm young, naive, and easily excitable having yet to be jaded by the pointy elbows of Capitalism, but I think WickedFire could be more. You're thinking,

"More? What the fuck does that even mean!?"

And that's fair. But first I'll address your next question:

"Why the fuck did you write this?"

I took some time out to write this proposal because I have a really big chubby for the idea of community. I've always agreed that once I've established a modest level of success in business, I'd strive to be an impact player at the city and local industry level. It's a win-win. I do believe there are differences between a real world, local community and an online, global forum, but I'll address those if a discussion follows.

Secondly, I've spent too much time around this board for the sake of entertainment and not enough time adding or extracting value. That's going to change, and until I write this community off entirely, I will do my part.

In response to your first question, I'll start by defining what I perceive WickedFire to be. Keep in mind that my first encounter with web design was in 1999 while my first meaningful encounter with SEO was in 2011. WickedFire is a shallow knowledgebase and common for internet marketers and related professionals. And of course, all of the meaningful stuff happens between newly-connected members off-site or offline. But in an industry that is particularly gaurded due to constant warring with search engineers, easily exploitable markets, and a wavering level of ethics, I find it hard to differentiate between the who's who. It was Guerilla who told me, "'Peasant' is just a state of mind." Among the "peasant" pool of our active membership, I see people with at least a basic understanding of marketing (exceptions apply), a commendable drive, and the want to work and learn. To me, that sums up potential. To vets, well, I've heard more than a few remarks regarding the "poor" state of this community in comparison to five years ago. I can't attest to that. But I am a witness to the upside, and I'm one of them. So here's my proposal:

This is not a plea for vets to hire out and mentor a new guy. Instead, leverage the membership here at WickedFire (and no, taking advantage of a situation does not require malicious intent). In my short time here, I can't recall the number of moments I've thought to myself, "Oh snap, that guy is a developer/designer/manufacturer/real estate agent/cock fluffer." Give us - small business founders and freelancers - a way to connect and collaborate beyond STS or the many useful sub-forums currently available.

I suppose this should be directed to Jon, but I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about this proposal.

TL;DR: Give us - small business founders and freelancers - a way to connect and collaborate beyond STS or the many useful sub-forums currently available.

Rescued adult dog saves Coast Guard veteran from depression ...

A rescued dog always seems to know when it?s been given another chance, and often returns the favor. This is the case with Charlotte, an adult dog who rescued?her?savior, a Coast Guard veteran, from the grips of his depression.

Al is a?Coast Guard?veteran who was honorably adopted last June by Charlotte, a four year-old Pug-Beagle mix (?Puggle?), at Pets for Patriots? adoption partner?Michigan Humane Society.

An avid diver, Al joined the Coast Guard in the late 1970?s. When he decided to enlist, it was the lifesaving aspects of the job that attracted him to the Coast Guard. Among the memorable events of his service were his tours of Antarctica. While the Coast Guard was hard work, Al enjoyed dives both on- and off-duty with his military buddies in Hawaii, the Polynesian Islands and elsewhere on his way to Antarctica.

Growing up in Michigan, Al and his family always owned dogs. His favorite childhood pet was a?cockapoo?named Smokey, who followed Al everywhere when he was home.

As an adult, this Coast Guard veteran thought about, but never owned a dog. His interest piqued last spring when he watched a segment about Pets for Patriots on Detroit?s?Fox 2 News.?

?They did a really thorough job explaining how the Pets for Patriots program works. After watching that piece, I thought ?why not me???

Particularly appealing to him was how Pets for Patriots?makes pet adoption and ownership affordable?for veterans.

?I?m on disability, so the adoption discount and the discount for veterinary services are a big help to me.?

In June, the Coast Guard veteran visited his local Pets for Patriots adoption partner, the?Michigan Humane Society (MHS) in Westland, to search for his new best friend. There he saw for the first time a?Puggle, which moments earlier had found a new home. It seemed like such a good dog that it inspired Al to adopt a Puggle as well.

Since no other Puggles were available at the time, Al left his contact information with Gary Roush, a dual?MHS?and Pets for Patriots volunteer, and requested that he be notified if any other Puggles were brought into the shelter.

Just a few weeks later, Al?s request was granted. Gary called him to let him know that two Puggles, Wilbur and Charlotte, had arrived at the humane society. Al fell in love with Charlotte ? at 22 pounds, the more petite of the two dogs ? and decided to give her a forever home.

Al immediately realized the benefits of adopting a mature dog. Apparently Charlotte had been house-trained and received some basic obedience training in her previous home.

?She?s well-mannered and loves to give kisses. She knows I?m a pushover, but really, I have no complaints.?

Over the past few months, Al has found that Charlotte has made his life a lot more pleasant.

?She?s changed my life. I enjoy our walks, spending time outdoors with her, watching TV with her.? As a bonus, Charlotte has become sensitized to Al?s bouts with?depression, trying harder during tough times to lift his spirits.

?I couldn?t ask for a better buddy. She?s the best girl friend I?ve ever had.?

To other veterans considering adopting a companion pet, Al provides this advice:

?I couldn?t be happier with the difference that Charlotte has made in my life. Pets for Patriots made the pet adoption process a really positive experience for me. Get over to a Pets for Patriots shelter and find your best buddy today.?

How does your pet lift your spirits?

Iran readies domestic Internet, blocks Google

5 hrs.

DUBAI ??Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.

The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".

"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.

The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.

Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.

But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.

Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.

Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.

But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.

"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.

According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.

Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.

The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.

Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.

Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.

Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.

"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."

Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.

Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.

Let?s Play Astronaut

Astronauts descend into caves. Astronauts descend into the Sa Grutta caves in Sardinia for a week of living and training underground.

Photo by V. Crobu/European Space Agency.

Andrew Feustel was chosen as a NASA Mission Specialist in 2000. He was on the final space-shuttle mission to the Hubble Telescope in 2009. In 2011, he went on the penultimate shuttle mission to the International Space Station, clocking up four spacewalks. He has a Ph.D. in geology from Queens University in Ontario, Canada, and restores cars in his spare time.

Lisa Grossman: You just emerged from six days in a cave in Sardinia, Italy. Why were you down there?
Andrew Feustel: I was training with an international team of astronauts. The idea was for them to become better at what they need to do best: to work together as international teams in stressful environments, but making critical decisions to get the job done.

LG: Why a cave?
AF: It allows us to operate in a high-stress environment, where the decisions you make and everything you do?even walking?is difficult, and the consequences of those decisions are real and significant. It's dark in there. You can get injured if you don't follow proper safety protocols.

LG: What was it like?
AF: It's like mountain climbing in the dark. We traveled almost a kilometer underground throughout the six nights we spent in this cave. We had to use rappelling ropes and harnesses to move up and down the cave walls.

And it was dark. There was total blackness when the lights went out, and those lights are your means of survival. Without lights you're lost. One of the jokes each day was, "Let's wait until tomorrow to do that, when the sun comes out so we can see." But of course the sun never came out. It was a fantastic experience.

LG: Was it like space at all?
AF: You can't say a cave is like space. But there are parts of living in a cave for six nights that are analogous to being on a space mission.

Some of the techniques we use, like tethering?where we have short ropes or hooks that keep us attached to the climbing apparatus?are similar to a spacewalk. You have to be sure that every move you make is very calculated. Things don't come naturally. You have to be precise. In that sense it was very much like space. And working with an international crew?that was similar.

LG: Do you think you might get to use these skills in lava tubes on Mars, for example?
AF: Not directly. We weren't there to learn how to be cavers. We were learning to work on an international team to accomplish common goals and objectives.

LG: How did it feel when you came out?
AF: It felt a little bit like when I came home from space. Coming out of the cave, the first thing that strikes you is the smell of earth. My experience of spaceflight was the same. When the hatch of the space shuttle was opened, it wasn't the visuals that struck me, it was the fact that I could smell Earth. I could smell the grass, I could smell mold. It lit up my imagination and reminded me I was coming home. I didn't expect coming out of the cave to bring back those same memories. That was a little bit surprising.

Florida State vs Clemson Game Where and When to Watch, Betting Odds, Prediction, and Preview for Saturday?s College Football Game

The No. 4-ranked Seminoles trounced Wake Forest 52-0 last week. Florida State has now held opponents scoreless for 10 consecutive quarters, and only given up three points in their three games.

Senior running back Chris Thompson was unstoppable against Wake, gaining 197 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries in the contest. The 5-foot-8 speedster scored on runs of 74 and 80 yards successively, which gave the Seminoles a 38-0 halftime lead. Thompson played only 20 minutes and did not see the field in the second half.

The fast-paced Tigers offense scored on five of their first six possessions last week as they drubbed Furman 41-7.

Receivers Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins and running back Andre Ellington are the core of Clemson?s offense and last week all three showed why against Furman. Watkins missed the first two games with injury, but roared back with seven catches for 95 yards. Ellington contributed 589 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Hopkins has been quarterback Taj Boyd's top option, as he's caught 26 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns.

Florida State must have last season's meeting on their mind. Watkins scorched the Seminoles, catching seven passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns in Clemson's 35-30 win.

The game begins at 8pm and will be broadcast by ABC.

Betting Odds: ?Florida State is favored by 15 points; Over/Under:? 56 points

Prediction: The Seminoles have not faced an offense like Clemson?s yet this season, which puts their scoreless quarter streak in jeopardy. Clemson must spread the ball among their weapons, and keep Florida State?s defense guessing. This should be a shootout that comes down to the fourth quarter, and Florida State prevailing by a touchdown.

Predicted Score: ?Florida State 31, Clemson 24

Larry Ellison, Oracle CEO, Gets $21 Million Pay Raise Despite Company's Stock Decline

BOSTON (Reuters) - Technology company Oracle Corp increased billionaire CEO Larry Ellison's compensation for last year by 24 percent.
Ellison, one of the most highly paid chief executive officers in the United States, and the world's sixth-richest man, according to Forbes, received total compensation for the year ended May 31 of $96.2 million, almost all of it in stock options. That compared with 77.6 million in the prior year.
His compensation rose during a period in which the company's shares fell 23 percent, underperforming the Nasdaq Composite Index, which was little changed during the same period.
Company spokeswoman Deborah Hellinger declined comment on the compensation package, which was disclosed in an annual filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The board's executive compensation committee said in that disclosure that its long-standing approach has been to "provide total compensation opportunities that are significantly above the average of our peer group."
That group includes Apple Inc, Cisco Systems Inc, International Business Machines Corp and Microsoft Corp.
Ellison, 68, has been CEO since he co-founded the company 35 years ago, making him the longest-running chief executive at a major Silicon Valley firm.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 now available in Canada

Android Central

After a few hints of an impending launch, Samsung has announced that the Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Note 10.1 is now available at a variety of retailers across Canada starting at $499. The Android tablet includes all of the good stuff you'd expect, like the dual-screen multitasking, the S Pen accessory, and 50 GB of DropBox storage.

Online stores like Best Buy and Future Shop are still showing preorder status and an expected release in five days, but with any luck that may change before the end of the day. Pop in to your local store to see if they have stock, and let us know in the comments. An LTE model for Rogers, Bell, and TELUS may find its way to shelves before the end of the year, but no official word on that just yet.

Full specs for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 are tucked away below in the press release. Any Canadians considering getting one of these? Our review had a few criticisms of the tablet, some of which may be deal-breakers for you.

There's A Personal Finance Message In ... - Business Insider

The video for ?Gangnam Style,? a pop song by Korean rap star Psy (short for Psycho), has been raging across the world.

It has racked up 221 million YouTube views as of this writing and is the number one song downloaded on iTunes. Psy himself has been on a media tear in the United States and has appeared on the?MTV Video Music Awards,?Ellen?(twice),?The Today Show?and?Saturday Night Live.

And if you haven?t yet seen him, his addictive video or any of the many parodies it has spawned (by the?Oregon Duck mascot,?Naval Academy cadets, a?wedding party,?lifeguards?and?more), get ready to see more of him, because he has signed with Scooter Braun, the man who made stars of Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen.

But there?s no reason for a personal finance site to be writing about a silly song known for its horse-riding dance, right? Well, actually, it turns out this addictively catchy song and its accompanying video relay a lesson that could help you with your own spending habits.

What Gangnam Style Is All About

The words ?gang? and ?nam? literally mean ?south of the river,? but Gangnam with a capital G is an upscale neighborhood of Seoul (you guessed it) on the south side of the river. As the Beverly Hills of South Korea?s biggest city, it also occupies a psychic place in the minds of Korea?s 99% and represents the luxurious life for which they strive.

The neighborhood is just seven square miles but holds 7% of Korea?s GDP. For comparison, New York state, which is 3,000 times the size of Gangnam holds 7% of U.S. GDP. Forty-one percent of students at the nation?s most prestigious college, Seoul University, come from Gangnam, which in the U.S., would be like having 41% of Harvard students come from Manhattan.

The neighborhood is full of high-rise apartment buildings, high-end department stores, the city?s trendiest boutiques and hottest clubs, and a lot of plastic surgery clinics. As U.S.-based Korean blogger Jae Kim says in?her analysis of the song, ?In short, it?s like the U.S. Upper East Side plus Beverly Hills minus tradition; or I?d rather say it?s more like ?Dubai???and here, she refers to the area?s recent development??built on Korean cabbage and Korean pear fields.?

What ?Gangnam Style? The Song Is About

But Psy?s rendering of ?Gangnam Style? highlights the superficiality of this dream. In the opening scene, Psy is lounging on a beach, dreaming he is being fanned by a beautiful girl. As the camera pans out, you realize he is actually lying on a chair in a sandy children?s playground.

Then you see him in a tux with a girl on each arm, strutting as though down a red carpet, except they appear to be in an underground parking lot, and instead of confetti fluttering down upon them, trash is flying at them with blizzard-like force.

In another scene, he parties like a rock star in a bus outfitted with disco balls, but his fellow partygoers are retirees wearing sun visors.

Meanwhile, in all these scenes, he?s dancing as though he?s riding an invisible horse, almost as though he?s the knight of his own imaginary Camelot.

The Truth Behind This Lifestyle

While the video is hilarious and seems to offer a sharp critique of the Gangnam lifestyle, it is also based on some hard facts of the personal finances of South Koreans, as?The Atlantic?points out.

Many families appear to be pursuing the Gangnam lifestyle whether or not it fits within their budget. For instance, Psy states his ability to drink coffee in one gulp and expresses a desire for a woman who drinks coffee too. What is so special about coffee, which is cheap? Well it turns out that in Korea, there?s a popular joke about women who eat $2 ramen for lunch in order to afford a $6 coffee at Starbucks, mocking women who spend more than they can afford.

And indeed, spending more than you can afford seems to be the trend in Korea.?The Financial Times reports?that household debt in South Korea has reached a perilous high: 155% of disposable income, which is higher than the U.S. figure before the subprime mortgage crisis (138%).

The country?s obsession with achievement drives people to buy luxury handbags and cars and pay for expensive tutors that will get their children into the top universities, according to?The Washington Post.?Sadly, these aspirations outweigh any lessons that Koreans might have learned from?the credit crisis?the country endured in 2002, when Koreans had an average of almost five cards per person, and the government had to step in to bail out the country?s largest credit-card issuer.

While credit card ownership dropped to an average of about three per person afterward, it is back up to almost five again. A little over a year ago, the South Korean government and economists rolled out several policies to get Korean consumers to be more cautious about their spending before a crisis does it for them.

What You Can Learn From ?Gangnam Style?

So, now that you know the price Koreans pay for pursuing the Gangnam lifestyle, here?s what you can learn from this silly song:

  • Don?t live beyond your means. If you want to buy something out of your reach, remember that studies show that while we often think that buying or owning something will make us happier, what actually happens is that after an initial spike, our happiness level reverts to what it was before the purchase. Also, when you feel tempted to buy something you can?t afford, ask yourself whether the joy you?ll get from this object is really worth the pain and stress of paying off the debt. And if your spending problem is simply not knowing where your money is going, then?set up a budget?in LearnVest's Money Center and?start tracking your expenses.
  • Don?t try to keep up with the Joneses. Remember that everyone has a different life path and circumstances are constantly changing. You may envy your friend?s lifestyle now, but in a year, the tables may be turned. Besides, you never know: Your friend?s fabulous lifestyle may not be funded by cash, but by debt.
  • Don?t get into credit card debt. While debt is debt, there are some kinds that are worse than others. Credit card debt is one of them because the interest compounds, meaning that with every day you don?t pay it off, it grows bigger. And unlike a student loan, a mortgage or a business loan, what you get out of it doesn?t appreciate in value or increase your earning power. (If you?re working your way out, try LearnVest's?Get Out of Debt Bootcamp.)
  • Finally, remember that there are so many ways you can enrich your life for free. For instance, you can?underindulge,?because the less you have of something, the more you enjoy it;?savor?so you fully enjoy each experience;?and regularly express?gratitude, so you remember how much?you already have.

As Psy shows as he traipses around Gangnam, the more we try to live lives outside of our means, the more ridiculous we look?while also probably feeling worse about ourselves:?Psy himself said?of his experience filming the ridiculous scenes in ?Gangnam Style,? ?Human society is so hollow, and even while filming I felt pathetic. Each frame by frame was hollow.?

So, enjoy doing the horse-riding dance, but don?t forget the price of having Gangnam Style.

Wal-Mart waves goodbye to entire Amazon Kindle line

Following in Target's footsteps, Wal-Mart has announced it will no longer sell Amazon Kindle e-readers and Amazon Kindle Fire tablets.?

By Matthew Shaer / September 20, 2012

Wal-Mart will no longer sell the Amazon Kindle e-reader, pictured here, nor the Kindle Fire tablet line.

Back in May, Target announced it would stop selling Amazon Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets. Now, several months later, Wal-Mart has followed suit, booting the Kindle line, which includes a range of Fire and Kindle devices, from outlets across the country.?

"We have recently made the business decision to not carry Amazon tablets and eReaders beyond our existing inventory and purchase commitments," Wal-Mart said in an internal memo obtained by Reuters. "This includes all Amazon Kindle models current and recently announced."

So what's behind the shift? Well, a healthy sense of competition, mostly. Consider: Wal-Mart sells a range of household and homegoods products. Amazon used to be just a big bookseller, but in recent years it has become a bookseller that also sells television sets and food products and even deodorant. That's threatening to Wal-Mart and Target.?

"I think part of it could be margin, though the bigger point is that Wal-Mart and Target view Amazon as a competitor,"?Scott Tilghman, an analyst at Caris & Company, told Reuters. (It's worth noting that neither Wal-Mart nor Target has officially commented on the reason for removing the Kindle line from stores; Amazon, for its part, is staying mum.)

Earlier this month, at an event in Santa Monica, Kindle CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled?a new line of?Kindle Fire?tablets and a backlit e-reader called the?Kindle Paperlight. Generally speaking, critics have been pleased with the new Kindle Fires, and especially the 7-inch HD model. Writing in Gizmodo, Kyle Wagner said he found the tablet "impressive." The modified Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system? Less so.?

"[A]fter using Jelly Bean on the Nexus 7, it's just impossible to go back to [the Fire] without it feeling horribly slow and laggy," Wagner wrote. "How bad is it? It's bad enough that when you tap an icon, you wonder if you did it wrong, if maybe you didn't tap firmly enough."

Body fat location may determine type 2 diabetes risk for obese patients

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Obese individuals with excess visceral fat (abdominal fat that surrounds the body's internal organs) have an increased risk for the development of Type 2 diabetes, according to a new study by researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center. By contrast, persons with excess abdominal subcutaneous fat (fat underneath the skin) were not at higher risk for the onset of diabetes.

The study, published in the September obesity-themed issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, is one of the largest of its kind to assess a multiethnic population of obese people in the U.S. using extensive imaging of adipose tissue. The findings are being presented today in New York at a media briefing hosted by JAMA.

"Among obese individuals, it is not necessarily how much fat a person has, but rather where the fat is located on a person that leads to diabetes," according to the paper's senior author, Dr. James de Lemos, professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern.

Using imaging methods to determine the location and function of body fat, researchers are able to identify obese persons who are at a higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes years before the disease appears.

"Understanding the biological differences between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat may help doctors to more effectively battle the obesity epidemic occurring in the United States," Dr. de Lemos said. "The risk for diabetes varies widely among different obese individuals, and this study suggests that by predicting who will get diabetes, it may be possible to target intensive lifestyle, medical, and surgical therapies for those at a higher risk."

The study, which collected information from UT Southwestern's Dallas Heart Study, sampled 732 obese adults -- those with a body mass index of 30 or greater -- between the ages of 30 and 65, without diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

Researchers utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) to determine where fat was stored in the body. While other studies have weighed people and used tape measures to assess their body fat, this study included the largest number of obese people to undergo extensive body-fat imaging.

When participants returned for a follow-up after seven years, researchers found that 11 percent of the people sampled developed diabetes. Among the participants who had normal glucose at baseline testing, 39 percent developed prediabetes or diabetes. Prediabetes is believed to be an intermediate state between normal metabolic function and diabetes. Those who developed prediabetes and diabetes had higher amounts of visceral fat and greater insulin resistance compared to those who remained healthy.

"We found that individuals who developed prediabetes and diabetes had evidence of early cardiovascular disease years before the onset of diabetes," said Dr. Ian Neeland, a cardiology fellow and first author of the paper. "This finding suggests that excess visceral fat and insulin resistance may contribute to cardiovascular disease among obese individuals."

The Dallas Heart Study is a multi-ethnic population-based study of 6,101 adults from Dallas County. Among other things, the investigation -- begun in 1999 -- was designed to identify new genetic, protein, and imaging biomarkers that can detect cardiovascular disease at its earliest stages, when treatment is most effective. This research, funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, involved numerous noted UT Southwestern scientists and physicians, including Dr. Helen Hobbs, director of the Eugene McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development, and Dr. Eric Olson, chairman of molecular biology.

More information about the Dallas Heart Study is available online: http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/education/medical-school/departments/internal-medicine/divisions/cardiology/research/dallas-heart/index.html

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will hit 5 US carriers by mid-November

Galaxy Note 2

Samsung has unveiled their U.S. release plans for the upcoming Galaxy Note 2, and things are looking very nice. The Note 2 will be on all five major U.S. carriers by mid-November, making this the second time Samsung was able to pull off a (mostly) simultaneous launch of the same model across the board.

We've seen the so-called international version of the Note 2, but what do we get here in the states? A beast, that's what.

  • 1.6 quad-core Exynos CPU
  • LTE and/or HSPA+42 where applicable
  • 2GB RAM
  • Android 4.1
  • 16GB storage
  • microSD card slot

That's not a typo -- the Note 2 will be the debut of the LTE optimized Exynos. I know more than a few have been waiting for that one. Of course this all sits under the 5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD screen an is backed up by that 3100mAh battery. Jelly Bean is an awesome bonus, and there's a chance that this will be the first phone on Verizon to offer it.

Of course the redesigned S-Pen and software optimizations are on-board, and the device will be available in Marble White or Titanium Grey, with flip-cover backs available in Titanium Gray, Marble White, Blue, Pink, Mint, Lime Green, and Orange. Full details from carriers will be coming soon, we'll keep an eye out for all the Note 2 news.

The full press release is after the break, and the Galaxy Note 2 forums are open for business!

British fugitive shoots dead two unarmed policewomen

LONDON (Reuters) - One of Britain's most wanted fugitives killed two unarmed policewomen on Tuesday in a gun and grenade ambush, police said, killings which are likely to reignite a long-running debate over whether British officers should carry guns.

Police constables Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, were gunned down in a hail of bullets after responding to a hoax call about a burglary in the northern English city of Manchester.

Despite shock over the murders, described by Prime Minister David Cameron as "despicable", senior police officers said they were determined that the British force would remain one of few in the world which is not routinely armed.

Police said the two constables, one of whom was about to be married, had been deliberately lured into a trap by Dale Cregan, 29, a suspect in another double killing in the city. Cregan handed himself into a local police station after the shooting.

Either Cregan or an associate made the false burglary report to lure the officers to the scene, said Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Peter Fahy.

"Then he has come out and shot and killed them both," Fahy told reporters, adding Cregan also threw a grenade at them.

"Certainly, it would appear to be that he has deliberately done this in an act of absolutely cold-blooded murder. It's almost impossible to fathom such an evil act."

Fahy did not offer any possible motive for the ambush.

Witnesses reported hearing more than a dozen shots and an explosion. One of the officers died at the scene and the other in hospital, police said.

"PURE EVIL"

Fahy said catching Cregan had been their top priority since the murder of David Short in August and the shooting of Short's son Mark in a pub in May.

Local media said those killings resulted from a long-running family feud and police had offered a 50,000 pound reward for information leading to his arrest.

Politicians and chief officers across the country spoke of their horror at Tuesday's shootings.

"What we've seen is just (an) absolutely despicable act of pure evil," Cameron said in a statement.

It is rare for British police officers, especially female constables, to be killed in the line of duty. Unlike the bulk of forces across the world, the overwhelming majority of Britain's 150,000 police officers do not regularly carry firearms, although every force has special armed units and some carry electric Taser stun guns.

The last time more than one police officer was shot dead in the same incident in Britain was in the 1960s.

In 2005, unarmed constable Sharon Beshenivsky was killed and a female colleague wounded when they went to investigate an armed robbery in the northern English city of Bradford.

That led to a heated debate over whether Britain should arm its police, but Fahy, other senior officers and politicians again said they did not want officers to carry firearms.

"We are passionate that the British style of policing is routinely unarmed policing," he said.

"Sadly we know from the experience in America and other countries that having armed officers certainly does not mean sadly that police officers do not end up getting shot dead."

Cameron said more armed units were now available than previously. "This was supposed to be the response to a domestic burglary and that wouldn't require armed officers," he said.

Paying tribute to the dead officers, Fahy said the karate-loving Hughes had worked for the police for three years and Bone, who had five years service, was preparing for her wedding.

"Her partner only spoke to her this morning about the wedding invites and fellow officers gave her advice about to make them on the computer," he said.
