Technology's holy grail is the development of a "perfect" Quantum Computer. Traditional computers recognize information as bits: binary information that represent "On" or "Off" states. A Quantum Computer uses qubits; operating in superposition, it exists in all states simultaneously -- not just "On" or "Off," but every possible state in-between. It would theoretically be able to instantly access every piece of information at the same time, meaning that a 250 qubit computer would contain more data than there are particles in the universe. IBM thinks it's closer than ever to realizing this dream and if you want to know more, we have the full details after the break.

Free/Libre Open Source Science Education: Thinking about textbooks

I teach physics and an electronics with Arduino class. I've never used a textbook in my electronics class, unless you consider my webpage to be a textbook, and have been relying less and less on the textbook for my physics class. Our book simply became a source of problems and really very little more than that. Consequently, this year I didn't require a textbook.?I teach at a private school and students are responsible for buying their own textbooks, so if I don't require one they won't buy one.I have since come to realize that some students do rely on the text. This is particularly true for students who don't "get it" the first or second time through in class as well as those students who might be out of class for an extended period of time (chronic illness, mono, family vacation). So I decided to kick the tires on iBooks Author to see if I could create a series of Study Guides to supplement my curriculum.

It wasn't until I read a blog post by Dan Meyer that I finally realized why it's so hard writing a book to teach. dy/dan summed it up pretty well. Textbooks try to be both instructional guides and comprehensive reference texts at the same time, "...the goals of a reference text and the goals of instructional materials ? cut across each other."

So I might ask a student, "How does horizontal velocity affect time in the air?" At that point I have two choices. I can hope they get it and then move on, or I have to give them the answer. If they don't have the answer they can't make meaning from the subsequent material.

At some level I'll have to give them the answers. But as Dan points out, adding extra pages to an iBook does not affect it's cost or weight. This will allow me to move the answers to the next page, an appendix, put answers in white text that only appears when highlighted, or maybe I could co-opt the glossary. In the end I think I'll play with multiple ways of occluding the answers until the students get a chance to think. I know, of course, that there will always be students who dive straight into looking, but this version of the material would be support and not the primary way my students will learn.

Ideally I'd have a resource that would allow me to multiply myself so I could have a Socratic dialog with each of my students individually or in small gourds, at any hour of the day or night. I think this would lead to much greater learning, however it is not likely to ever happen and I enjoy my sanity.

Since I can't create a Socratic Dialog app, I'll try instead to create a study guide that I believe my students can learn from. So far all I have is one section of one chapter and it's in pretty rough form. This is partly because I'm still playing with what is possible and partly because I'm creating all my content as I go. Which means I often change my train of thought and have to redo the whole layout and flow. My book also has some extra white space. This happens because I want students to consider what's on the page in front of them before I give them the answer. I may try to fill in some of the white space with pictures later, I haven't decided yet.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Soaring gasoline prices are threatening to undercut President Barack Obama's re-election prospects and offering Republicans an easy target. With prices pushing $4 a gallon and threatening to go even higher, Obama sought Thursday to confront rising public anxiety and strike back at his GOP critics.

Obama said dismissively that all the Republicans can talk about is more drilling ? "a bumper sticker ... a strategy to get politicians through an election" ? when the nation's energy challenges demand much more. In a speech in Miami, he promoted the expansion of domestic oil and gas exploration but also the development of new forms of energy.

For all the political claims, economists say there's not much a president of either party can do about gasoline prices. Certainly not in the short term. But it's clear that people are concerned ? a new Associated Press-GfK poll says seven in 10 find the issue deeply important ? so it's sure to be a political issue through the summer.

"Right now, we're experiencing yet another painful reminder of why developing new energy is so critical to our future," the president said. At an average of $3.58 a gallon, prices are already up 25 cents since Jan. 1, and experts say they could reach a record $4.25 a gallon by Memorial Day.

Those higher prices could hurt consumer spending and unravel some of the recent improvements in the economy. And they could also be a daily reminder to voters to question Obama's contention that he's making the nation ? and them ? more secure.

While motorists are already starting to complain, many economists see the $4-a-gallon mark as a breaking point above which the economy starts to suffer real pain. Analysts estimate that every one-cent increase is roughly a $1.4 billon drain on the economy.

Obama's Republican challengers aren't letting it all slide by. They have stepped up their attacks on his energy policies, including his rejection last month of a pipeline to carry oil from Canada to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. And they're full of promises.

"I've developed a program for American energy so no future president will ever bow to a Saudi king again, and so every American can look forward to $2.50-a-gallon gasoline," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in the Wednesday night GOP debate in Mesa, Ariz. He calls his strategy "Drill Here, Drill Now."

At the same event, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania ? who has warned of $5-a-gallon gas ? asserted that "we have a lot of troubles around the world, as you see the Middle East in flames and what's going on in this country with gas prices and the economy." And former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney suggested that even more troubling than rising gasoline prices was Iranian President Mahmoud "Ahmadinejad with nuclear weapons."

In his speech at the University of Miami, Obama sought to draw a contrast with his GOP challengers and made a pointed reference to what he suggested was Republican glee at rising gas prices.

"And you can bet that since it's an election year, they're already dusting off their three-point plans for $2 gas," Obama said. "I'll save you the suspense. Step one is drill, step two is drill, and step three is keep drilling. .. We've heard the same thing for 30 years. Well, the American people aren't stupid."

Addressing the rising public anxiety, Obama said, "There are no quick fixes to this problem, and you know we can't just drill our way to lower gas prices." Anyone suggesting otherwise was not being honest, he said.

Still, Obama said he had ordered his administration to search for every possible area to help consumers in the coming months. He said his administration's "all-of-the-above strategy," one that includes oil, gas, wind and solar power, is the "only real solution" to the nation's energy challenges.

Gingrich quickly dismissed Obama's energy speech as "excuses and fantasies."

Presidents often get blamed for rising gas prices, but there's not much they can do about them. The current increases at the pump have been driven by tensions in Iran and by higher demand in the U.S. as well as in China, India and other quickly growing nations.

"Obviously, people go to the pump all the time, so it's something that really hits home with the voters," said Fred Greenstein, a Princeton University professor emeritus of politics. "It's an easy issue to talk about, and not an easy issue to accomplish very much on."

In his Miami remarks, Obama said that despite political criticism of his policies "America is producing more oil today than at any time in the last eight years. He also noted that, for the first time in 30 years, the United States is now exporting more petroleum products than it imports.

But Jack Gerard, the president of the American Petroleum Institute, challenged Obama's apparent effort to take credit.

"While oil production is up, the increase relates almost entirely to investment and leasing decisions made before, sometimes long before, this administration came into office," Gerard said. "The increase is also due to oil and gas development on private and state lands over which the administration has little or no control at all."

Though Obama's approval rating on the economy has climbed, his negative rating on handling gas prices is stagnant. Just 39 percent approve of what he's doing there, and 58 percent disapprove, according to the new AP-GFK survey.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said gasoline prices are likely to keep rising as the summer driving season approaches. "Increasingly, it's becoming the biggest threat to the economy," he said. "And there is little presidents can do to influence gasoline prices in the near term."

Some lawmakers have called for Obama to release oil from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

"Rising gas prices could be the difference between an economy that continues to recover and an economy that sinks back into recession," said Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., among those calling for such a move.

The emergency reserve is kept in salt caverns in Texas and Louisiana and contains about 700 million barrels of oil. There are 42 gallons in each barrel. Last year, as prices rose, Obama authorized the sale of 30 million barrels of oil from the reserve.

However, economists suggest that tapping the reserve to increase the amount of oil on the market has only a modest and temporary effect on gas prices.

Will Obama take that step? White House spokesman Jay Carney says, "We never take options off the table."

Obama may just have to get used to the criticism, because it probably isn't going away anytime soon, said James Thurber, an American University political science professor. "Republicans will hit him with anything that comes up which makes him look bad," he said.

Still, as long as the economy seems to keep improving, Obama probably won't be hurt too much by the attacks "unless gas goes over $5 a gallon," Thurber said.

Commercial Mobile Alert Service (CMAS) Myths: Part 1

In our conversations about the Commercial Mobile Alert Service (CMAS) with the general public, public safety officials, the wireless communications industry, and local, state, and Federal Government staffers, we?ve heard about many of the myths and misconceptions that exist about CMAS ? how it works, who is running it, and what members of the public will see once CMAS is deployed in April 2012. (We reported last week on some large-scale testing of CMAS, which sparked fears and confusion about this new system based on inaccurate information.)

This post is the first of two addressing some common myths and misconceptions about CMAS. Stay tuned for the second post, which will discuss another five aspects of CMAS commonly misunderstood.?

Myth 1: CMAS is part of the Federal Government?s plan to install a tracking chip in all our cell phones.

Fact: There is no ?CMAS chip.??

The Commercial Mobile Service Alert Advisory Committee (CMSAAC ) determined that CMAS alerts should be distributed to the public through Cell Broadcast (CB) technology. CB has been around since about 1997. It is a valuable technology that allows wireless carriers (for example, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon) to send a single message to a specific cell tower that then broadcasts the message one way to all cell phones that are in the geographic area and able to receive the message.

Not all wireless carrier networks can send CB messages and not all cell phones in the U.S. can receive CB messages. CB technology has been slow to catch on in the U.S., so cell phone manufacturers have not produced many CB-programmed cell phones for sale in the U.S. market over the last several years. However, CB has been used successfully for commercial and/or public alerting purposes over the last several years in other countries like Israel, the Netherlands, and Poland.

CB technology is starting to catch on in the U.S. (and abroad) and wireless carriers are asking their cell phone manufacturers to include the technology in more and more of the cell phones they produce for the wireless carriers.
It should be noted that CMAS and CB technology are completely different and separate from FCC rulings and comments that eventually may require all cell phones manufactured for the U.S. market to have GPS technology.

Myth 2: CMAS alerts are text messages ? just like the normal text messages I receive on my cell phone already.

Fact: As noted above, CMAS alerts will be disseminated using CB technology, which differs from the SMS technology used to send and receive text messages.

SMS is a point-to-point technology; the sender is required to identify the phone number or numbers that should receive the message and must send the texts one at a time. CMAS?s use of CB technology allows it to send alerts point-to-many; the wireless carrier issues a single message to a cell tower and it is received by all CB-capable cell phones located near the cell tower. Because the wireless carrier sends the message to a cell tower, rather than to a cell phone, the carrier is not able to identify the specific phones that receive the CB message. CB messages also present themselves differently from SMS messages. CB messages, such as CMAS alerts, present text and a special tone and vibration cadence very different from what you normally see and hear when you receive an SMS text message. CB messages may appear in the unified messaging inbox, but they are not SMS messages.

Myth 3: CMAS alerts will jam cell phone lines during emergency events.

Fact: Because CMAS relies on CB technology, it is not impacted by traffic loads and CMAS alert messages will not get hung up or delayed the way text and voice calls sometimes do.?

During emergency events, spikes in use can burden and even crash wireless carriers? networks. However, CB technology operates differently from SMS and voice services and is not subject to the same traffic loads. CMAS alerts also will not interrupt or disconnect a call already in place; the device will not display the text, tone, and cadence of a CMAS alert message until a previous call has ended.

Myth 4: I?ll be charged by my wireless carrier for CMAS alerts.

Fact: Section 602(b)(2)(C) of the?Warning, Alert, and Response Network (WARN) Act?prohibits wireless carriers who elect to transmit CMAS alert messages to ?impose a separate or additional charge for such transmission or capability.?

Not only is there no fee to turn on CMAS functionality?or to receive a CMAS alert, but,?as noted above, CMAS alerts are not SMS text messages that subscribers normally pay to send and receive.?In fact, wireless carriers are not able to identify the specific cell phones that receive a CB message ? so, technically, it would be impossible for wireless carriers to identify and charge cell phone owners for receiving a CMAS alert.

Myth 5: Once CMAS is deployed in April 2012 all cell phones in the U.S. will be able to receive CMAS alerts.

Fact: There are only a small number of cell phones and mobile devices in the U.S. market right now that are programmed with CB technology, and only those phones programmed with CB technology can receive CMAS alerts.?

As we reported in a previous post, the big four wireless carriers have already posted information on their websites about cell phones they currently carry that are able to receive CMAS [aka Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA)] messages. Check out your own wireless carrier?s website or contact your wireless carrier to determine if your cell phone can receive CMAS/WEA alerts.

Yosemite's alpine chipmunks take genetic hit from climate change

ScienceDaily (Feb. 19, 2012) ? Global warming has forced alpine chipmunks in Yosemite to higher ground, prompting a startling decline in the species' genetic diversity, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.

The study, appearing Feb. 19, in the advance online publication of the journal Nature Climate Change, is one of the first to show a hit to the genetic diversity of a species because of a recent climate-induced change in the animals' geographic range. What's more, the genetic erosion occurred in the relatively short span of 90 years, highlighting the rapid threat changing climate can pose to a species.

With low genetic diversity a species can be more vulnerable to the effects of inbreeding, disease and other problems that threaten species survival, the researchers said.

"Climate change is implicated as the cause of geographic shifts observed among birds, small mammals and plants, but this new work shows that, particularly for mountain species like the alpine chipmunk, such shifts can result in increasingly fragmented and genetically impoverished populations," said study lead author Emily Rubidge, who conducted the research while a Ph.D. student at UC Berkeley's Museum of Vertebrate Zoology and the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management. "Under continued warming, the alpine chipmunk could be on the trajectory towards becoming threatened or even extinct."

Rubidge worked with Craig Moritz, professor of integrative biology and director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology; James Patton, professor emeritus of integrative biology and curator of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology; and Justin Brashares, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management.

The new findings build upon previous research that found major shifts in the range of small mammals in Yosemite National Park since the early 1900s. In 2003, biologists at UC Berkeley began an ambitious resurvey of Yosemite's birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, retracing the steps originally taken between 1914 and 1920 by Joseph Grinnell, founder and former director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology.

The Grinnell Resurvey Project, led by Moritz and museum colleagues, found that many small mammals in Yosemite moved or retracted their ranges to higher, cooler elevations over the past century, a period when the average temperature in the park increased by 3 degrees Celsius, or about 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is no surprise that the alpine chipmunk (Tamias alpinus) would be more sensitive to the temperature change, since it is a high-elevation species endemic to California's Sierra Nevada, the researchers said. In the early 1900s, Grinnell and colleagues sighted alpine chipmunks at elevations of 7,800 feet. Now, the alpine chipmunk appears to be sticking to even higher elevations, retracting its range by about 1,640 feet upslope.

To test the genetic impact from that loss of geographic range, researchers compared genetic markers from 146 modern-day alpine chipmunks with those from 88 of their historical counterparts. Samples were collected from seven paired sites throughout Yosemite.

As a control, the researchers also looked at the genetics -- both historic and modern -- of lodgepole chipmunks (Tamias speciosus), a lower elevation species that had not changed its range over the past century.

The analysis of genetic markers revealed a significant decline in "allele richness" among the recently sampled alpine chipmunk populations compared with their historic counterparts. Moreover, the researchers noted that the modern chipmunks were more genetically differentiated across sites than in the past, a sign of increased fragmentation in the alpine chipmunk population.

In comparison, there were no significant changes in genetic diversity detected among the lodgepole chipmunks, a species found at elevations from 4,900 to 9,800 feet.

"Much of what we read and hear about the effects of climate change on biodiversity is based on model projections and simulations, and these models typically involve many moving parts and lots of uncertainty," said Brashares. "Thanks to the baseline provided by Joseph Grinnell's pioneering efforts in the early 20th century, we are able to go beyond projections to document how climate is altering life in California. The research led by Emily is novel and important because it shows empirically that climate change has led to the loss of genetic diversity in a wild mammal over the last several decades."

Moritz added that this study exemplifies how patterns of change in California's ecosystems can be uncovered through analyses of fossil, historic and modern records.

"At the heart of this whole enterprise is the incredibly dense historic record and specimens we have at UC Berkeley from 100 years ago," said Moritz. "These collections allow us to conduct sophisticated analyses to better understand how ecosystems are reacting to environmental changes, and to create more detailed models of future changes."

Other study co-authors are Marisa Lim, a UC Berkeley undergraduate student in integrative biology; and Cole Burton, former UC Berkeley graduate student in environmental science, policy and management (now a research associate at the University of Alberta in Canada).

Funding for this research was provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, UC Berkeley's Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, the Yosemite Fund, the National Geographic Society and the National Science Foundation.
