Czech "Science Is Beautiful" photo and illustration competition explores the wondrous worlds discovered via scientific investigation

Life is filled with unexpected moments of beauty, something those on a lab bench know just as well as any poet. The third annual Science Is Beautiful competition at Charles University in Prague allowed students and faculty to share these moments through photographs, digital imagery and illustration.

"What is beautiful about science?" asked Bohuslav Ga?, dean of the university's Faculty of Science, which organized the competition, during his introductory speech at the exhibition of winning entries. "Two things: the enchantment in the discovery of the unknown and the delight in the elegance of ideas and shapes. The last one we can fully perceive in the present exhibition."

The contest, which debuted in 2009, aims to share science's esthetic with the general public, raising awareness of the marvels scientists encounter daily. The winning entries cross disciplines, setting mathematical models and crustacean anatomy side by side. Each image blurs the distinction between art and science, from a da Vinci?esque painting of a fetus in utero, to a photograph of magnified mineral surface with a palette that would have pleased Kandinsky.

The competition received 281 entries, and jurists included a number of prominent Czech scientists and artists, including a singer?songwriter-cum-dragonfly-photographer as well as the founder of the Digital Imaging Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. In addition, the general public could comment on and rate entries online to elect a people's choice winner, which was announced alongside the jury's selections.

Winners could place in one of four categories: scientific microphotography, scientific photography, scientific illustration or virtual nature. In addition, the jury chose a grand prize?winner who received 12,000 Czech crowns.

The jury announced winners of the 2011 competition on December 14, 2011. This past May, the Czech edition of Scientific American shared a selection of winners and other outstanding entries. You can see more images from 2011 and previous years at the competition's Web site (in Czech).

Health Insurance Exchange Moves Ahead | KEZI

By Jennifer Richardson

SALEM, Ore. -- There are about 612,000 Oregon residents who do not have health insurance. That's about 16 percent of the population.

Oregon is farther along than most states when it comes to implementing the health care law.?The state started working on health care reform even before President Obama's 2010 initiative.

The federal government committed more than $60 million in grants to develop a health insurance exchange.

State leaders will continue creating that exchange to implement by 2014.

Some small businesses aren't happy about the plan, saying it will cost them a lot more to provide health insurance for their families.

Still, Governor John Kitzhaber says Oregon's work is a clear example of what's possible.

"I think the reason that the federal government, the Obama administration, was so willing to engage in this partnership with Oregon is that our our coordinate care organizations, our health care reform effort, essentially embodies the key elements of the affordable care act," said Governor John Kitzhaber.

"The congressional budget office admitted to the fact that premiums will go up, that it will be higher cost for the insurance companies. We all know that those higher costs get handed down," said Jan Meekcoms, Director of the National Federation of Independent Business.

Planned Parenthood of Oregon says this decision and act will allow for access to birth control and cancer screenings without co-pays.

The Oregon Student Public Interest Group (OSPIRG) says this is great for young adults who can stay on their parents plan till 26.

Those against, such as the Oregon Tea Party PAC, say this a huge tax on business and the middle class.

U.S. Representative Greg Walden says it will damage the economy and families.

The Obama administration has tentatively agreed to give Oregon nearly $2 billion to help implement the Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs).

What we're expecting from Google today

12 hrs.

Google I/O, the search engine giant's annual developer conference is taking place in San Francisco, California this week. The show kicks off today, with a keynote event, and I'm here to report live on all that we're expecting Google to unveil,?including its latest and greatest mobile operating system, a new tablet and more.

Here's what we think might be announced.

Android Jelly Bean
Jelly Bean is the code name for latest version of Google's popular mobile operating system. Even though the rumor mill has been steadily churning out little tidbits about this new Android build here and there, we don't really know too much about it.

Word is that Jelly Bean's alternate label is Android 4.1 ??rather than Android 5.0 ??and that it is full of little tweaks, instead of being a total revamp of Ice Cream Sandwich.

It's believed that Jelly Bean will bring improved battery life, a better search function, a native Chrome browser, and something dubbed Google Assistant ??an Android-flavored counterpart to Apple's Siri.

Nexus (7?)?tablet
We've been hearing that Google and hardware maker Asus are working on a tablet for quite a while, and documents discovered by Gizmodo Australia seemingly support everything we think we know about this device.

The documents ??which are allegedly an instruction manual of some sort ??detail that the tablet will be called the "Nexus 7" and that it will be a 7-inch device, with a 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB of RAM. The tablet will supposedly?come in 8GB and 16 GB versions, which will be priced at $199 and $249, respectively.?

(Observant sci-fi lovers will note that while the "7" could indicate the screen size, Nexus 7 is the the model of replicant that Deckard himself is suspected of being, in the classic "Blade Runner.")

Chrome OS
Google's been revamping the Chrome OS, particularly its look, and it would make sense if the company were to bring it closer to Android. After all, Apple and Microsoft have taught us that there's something appealing about unified mobile and desktop operating systems, especially as this desktop OS hasn't exactly taken off.

Google Cloud
Google introduced Google Drive, its long-anticipated cloud-storage service, about two months ago.?It wouldn't be surprising if the search engine giant talked about how it plans to integrate the technology into future services or apps.

Google Maps for iOS
As you may know, Apple has ditched Google Maps in iOS 6. Many are hopeful that Google will announce an iOS app which will allow them to continue easily accessing Google Maps in the future. In theory, such an app could include an offline feature similar to the one now offered to Android users.

Google TV
Google TV hasn't been a big hit so far, but Google might be looking to mix things up. How the search engine giant might go about doing that is anybody's guess at the moment ? there could be new hardware, a revamped interface and?appealing content partners. One such partner was announced today: Sirius XM, with its star Howard Stern, will turn up in an app for Google TV.

Google Glass
Google's been pretty shy about showing off its augmented reality glasses, which are part of something dubbed "Project Glass," but perhaps it'll grant developers a closer look at the technology this week.

???
Of course, Google could always throw some curveballs and announce something none of us expected. So for that, keep your eyes glued to our Gadgetbox blog for?live?coverage of the Google I/O keynote. (And if you want to hear some of my personal thoughts on the event, feel free to follow my on Twitter. I'm @rosa on there.)

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

SendHub Expands Beyond Messaging, Now Rivals Google Voices With Support For Calls & Voicemail

dialerSendHub, the?messaging startup that allows businesses to communicate with customers through SMS, is expanding its service today to now include support for voice calls and voicemail. These new features put SendHub in more direct competition with Google Voice, as users will now be able to use their SendHub phone numbers to both make and receive phone calls, while keeping their personal cell numbers private. Although the company only has an iPhone application and online service currently, these voice calls can be?initiated?and received on any device that supports messaging - even on feature phones.

Acer launches 116inch Sandy Bridge TravelMate B113

4GB of RAM, half a TB of storage, Sandy Bridge and an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 panel starting at €450 (about $563), sounds like a pretty sweet deal on a last-gen ultrabook right? Well, Acer's TravelMate B1113 is actually brand new and, as you dig a little deeper into the specs, this one sounds more like a rather hefty netbook. And we do mean hefty -- this laptop apparently tips the scales at 1.88 Kg, which puts it a touch over the four pound mark. 4.1 pounds certainly isn't shoulder busting, but it's a solid half a pound more than you'd expect from a machine of this size. Then there's the fact that the base model ships with a 1.4Ghz Celeron, and the top shelf €560 version (roughly $700) only sports a 1.5GHz Core i3. We haven't been able to dig up the dimensions on this sucker, but the press pics don't make it look particularly bulky. We can only assume, given its considerable weight and diminutive size, that the chassis is made of cast iron. On the plus side, it does have a matte screen... that's gotta count for something, right?

Remote Access Software Has Transformed The World Of Business!

With the rapid advancement in technology, it won?t be wrong to say that humans have become completely dependent on technology for their survival. Work, household chores, socialising, family or other purposes; technology has become a necessity. This advancement has given a boost to remote business administration throughout the globe. Sitting in one corner of the world and still accessing your desktop at the other end of the world, is not a dream anymore! Remote desktop software has become the most cost-effective way to help you keep on top of everything while travelling - accessing your desktop, files and folders, print documents remotely and all of that through any internet capable laptop or a mini-pocket device.

Mobile phones have taken over big business and complimented the advent of remote computer access. You can turn your mobile phone into a remote control of your home/office computer - with the help of remote control software. Certain software like Outlook Express, Windows Mail and others are only accessible through the personal computer. However, the remote desktop feature allows people to access their personal mail on such software even from a mobile phone or tablet now.

Video conferencing is again a very useful feature of the software. Remote desktop connection allows the main user and all its allied colleagues to video chat, even though not everyone has such software pre-installed. As many as 15 users can be taken in the online meeting sessions. Such type of remote desktop software is mainly used by professionals who always have to work offsite; sales professionals to give online presentations and lawyers to keep their documents secured at their offices but can access them any time handily while away. It may also be used by the parents to keep a watch on their children activity on the internet and likewise.

.

The remote desktop facility becomes easily accessible if the given requirement is met. Internet connection and compatible operating systems is the bare minimum necessity to operate or install such software. The remote control software also ensures complete security for the stored data. At every stage a password is required to authenticate complete access. Dealers like O1com can provide further guidelines as to how its patented technology makes it secure and easy to do remote access. Why take risk when solutions are possible and affordable?

Remote Access Software for online meetings, web conferencing, remote PC access, remote pc access software and remote IT support including help desk software and online training solutions. For more information please visit www.01com.com website.

Matt Kenseth to leave Roush at end of season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? NASCAR points leader Matt Kenseth, one of the longest-tenured drivers in the series, is leaving Roush Fenway Racing at the end of the season.

He will be replaced in the No. 17 Ford ? the car he has driven for all but one of his 452 career starts ? by Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kenseth's long relationship with Ford will apparently come to an end. He is believed to be headed to Joe Gibbs Racing, either in Joey Logano's No. 20 Toyota or a fourth unannounced team.

Why? Good question. The team offered no answers in the sudden divorce of one of NASCAR's longest active relationships. Only Jeff Gordon, with Hendrick Motorsports since 1993, has been with his team longer than Kenseth has been with Jack Roush.

"I'd like to thank Matt Kenseth for his many years of loyal service," co-owner Roush said Tuesday. "Matt has been an integral part of this organization for well over a decade, and we are extremely appreciative of his accomplishments and contributions to the team, and will always consider him a part of the Roush Fenway family."

Kenseth and teammate Greg Biffle are ranked 1st and 2nd in the Sprint Cup Series, clearly poised to make a run at the championship. Kenseth opened the season with his second Daytona 500 victory, and has 11 top-10 finishes through 16 races.

Kenseth did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday, but tweeted about his departure.

"I'm very thankful to Jack Roush for the opportunities he's given me over the past 14 years. Together we have enjoyed a lot of success," he posted. "And as a team we are committed as ever to the remainder of the 2012 season and chasing a 3rd sprint cup title for Jack and RFR."

With Roush, Kenseth has built a career worthy of Hall of Fame consideration. Besides the wins at Daytona, he has won 22 Cup races overall, and the 2003 championship. In the Nationwide Series, Kenseth has won 26 races driving for Roush.

His relationship with current general manager Robbie Reiser, like Kenseth a native of Wisconsin, dates at least to 1997, when Kenseth first drove Reiser's No. 17 entry. It was eventually merged into the Roush organization, and Reiser became Kenseth's crew chief at Roush in 2000, Kenseth's rookie season.

"Matt and I broke into this sport together, learned the ropes and were able to bring home a championship," Reiser said. "Over the 20 years we have worked with each other, Matt has been a fierce competitor and become a close friend, not only for me, but as a mentor to young drivers like Ricky. I wish Matt nothing but the best for the next phase of his career, and know that we'll remain close."

There was speculation last weekend at Sonoma that Kenseth was leaving to join JGR, which is in a contract year with Logano. The team also has room to expand to a fourth car, and it is possible Gibbs officials are trying to move Kenseth in and keep Logano at the same time.

Team president J.D. Gibbs did not respond to a request for a comment Tuesday, and said at Sonoma he could not talk about Kenseth.

Jamie Allison, director of Ford Racing, said the blue oval brand is was disappointed Kenseth is leaving.

"He will be certainly missed by us and the Ford Racing fans," Allison said. "We are thankful for Matt's winning efforts and championship-caliber success with the Roush and Ford racing programs these past 16 years, both on and off the track. We will focus on this year and look forward to more success on the track in his No. 17 Ford Fusion this season."

Kenseth's car has had sponsorship woes the last few years, and Roush is funding a large portion of this year's schedule himself for the 40-year-old Kenseth. The organization dropped David Ragan and its fourth team because of a lack of sponsorship at the end of last season, and also ponied up significant money to re-sign Carl Edwards last season. Roush also signed Biffle to a contract extension last season.

The team desperately needs a slot for the 24-year-old Stenhouse, who is locked into a long-term contract but has nowhere to go in Roush's Cup lineup. The organization has a similar problem with 2011 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, who is also in a long-term contract and had his Nationwide Series team shuttered earlier this season because of no funding.

Stenhouse will be far cheaper than Kenseth in terms of salary, and he is much younger and clearly has a future with the organization.

"We feel that he is not only a key piece of our team's future, but a key piece of the future of the sport," Roush said of Stenhouse. "Roush Fenway is an organization with a wonderful past and present, as well as an extremely promising future, and I can't think of a better candidate than Ricky to usher in the next era of success for the team."

It's unusual, though, for a team and driver to decide to part ways during a championship run. Roush technically has three shots at the Sprint Cup title, as Biffle has proven to be just as strong as Kenseth this season. And Edwards, who tied Tony Stewart last year for the championship but lost the title on a tie-breaker, could still qualify for the 12-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field.

Roush, meanwhile, doesn't think Kenseth's departure will hurt the No. 17 team's championship hopes.

"The No. 17 is positioned extremely well this season, and I'm committed to providing the team the best resources to continue their run for the 2012 championship," he said. "I have no doubt that Matt will do his part."

Samsung pegs LTE Galaxy S III for South Korea in July, quad-core quite possibly intact (update: yes!)

Samsung pegs LTE Galaxy S III for South Korea in July, quadcore quite possibly intact

Remember that dream version of the Galaxy S III that melded the Exynos 4 Quad, LTE-based 4G and 2GB of RAM all in one ultimate device? It now looks much closer to reality. Just as the 3G version is landing on the country's shores through SK Telecom, Samsung is sending word that the Korean LTE version is due in early July -- and Chosun claims it should have the best of all worlds in terms of performance. There should even be DMB TV tuning and a 500-title Video Hub for local movie lovers. We're anxious about just what that combination could do to battery life and the price, neither of which were mentioned up front. There may be good reasons why the US versions run on the dual-core Snapdragon S4, after all. Still, if the Korean LTE version doesn't have to make any sacrifices and is just a few weeks away from stores, it'll be hard not to turn a deep shade of green watching our friends in Seoul get what could easily be the better deal.

Update: The company has since piped up and confirmed to The Verge that the Korean LTE version is, in fact, quad-core. The LTE sits on a discrete modem chip where it's normally more tightly integrated on the Snapdragon, however -- and that means a potential knock against the runtime given that the 2,100mAh battery hasn't been beefed up.

Native Firefox Android browser adds speed, Flash, HTML5 and a fresh look (hands-on)

DNP Native Firefox Android browser adds speed, fresh look, Flash, HTML5 and, er, speed

After a brief stretch in beta followed by some vague teasing, Firefox's native Android app is finally set to hit Google Play. While there are a raft of other bells and whistles -- a new welcome page, curvy Australis tabs, Flash and HTML5 support, for starters -- the company is giving the browser's newfound speed the MVP treatment. That rapidity is as good a place as any to start a quick hands-on, especially since the native browser lag on our older Galaxy S handset often makes us want to hurl it through a pane of glass. Mozilla claims it built Firefox to a new benchmark it developed called Eideticker, resulting in an overall browser experience twice as fast as the stock Android one. As advertised, initial loading is quasi-instant, and navigation, zooming and tab switching seemed smooth as well, even on the two-gen old phone.

Feature-wise, preferences and other desktop settings imported easily with Firefox Sync's shared password system, and the unfortunately named "Awesome Page" is the new home screen shown above, from which it's fairly simple to launch your preferred sites. Flash and HTML5 generally displayed correctly despite a few minor rendering bugs, and appearance-wise, the curved tabs and other design touches make it one of the more elegant Android browsers we've played with. We were disappointed that the browser didn't detect and display mobile sites by default, but the installation of the Phony 3.2 add-in allows mobile site detection based on the criteria of various android browsers. We also didn't like that tabbed browsing now requires two taps, unlike the previous version, but we imagine that the new system was necessary to bump the speed up. Overall, Firefox is a welcome addition to the Android ecosystem -- we bet you're just as eager to start browsing as we are, so hit up our source link below to grab the app, or jump past the break for a quick speed demo from the kind folks at Mozilla.

(AP) ? Forty-somethings and teen phenoms.

Records and rivalries.

Comebacks and farewells.

While Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte are getting much of the attention, there's no shortage of compelling stories heading into the U.S. Olympic swimming trials, which begins Monday at a temporary pool set up in the middle of the 13,200-seat CenturyLink Center Omaha.

On the women's side, 11-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin will be matched against 17-year-old Missy Franklin, who emerged as the sport's next big star with a dazzling performance at last year's world championships. Then there's 40-year-old Janet Evans, attempting to qualify for the London Games after retiring for 15 years. And let's not forget 45-year-old Dara Torres, back again trying to make her sixth Olympic team. She insists this will be her last attempt.

Wildlife Conservation Society and the Royal Government of Cambodia say that more vulture 'restaurants' and reduction of poison in hunting is critical to saving vultures in Asia

In face of what has become a precipitous slide toward extinction across the Asian continent, the vultures of Cambodia have persisted, giving conservationists hope that these important scavengers can come back from the brink, according to authors from the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Royal Government of Cambodia, and other groups in a new study.

The creation of new feeding stations, or vulture "restaurants," and the restoration of populations of depleted wildlife species represent the next important steps in vulture conservation, the study says.

The paper appears in the online edition of Bird Conservation International. Authors include: Tom Clements, Martin Gilbert, and Hugo J. Rainey of the Wildlife Conservation Society; Richard Cuthbert of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds; Jonathan C. Eames of BirdLife International in Indochina; Pech Bunnat and Song Chansocheat of the Ministry of the Environment, Royal Government of Cambodia; Seng Teak of the World Wide Fund for NatureCambodia Program; and Tan Setha of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Royal Government of Cambodia.

"Results from vulture censuses from the past several years have been encouraging, with new nests recorded and even population increases," said WCS researcher Tom Clements, lead author on the new paper. "With continued investment, these critical populations can survive and grow."

In the study, which began in 2004, the authors collected data from several sites in Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Vietnam through a variety of methods, including monitoring of vulture nesting sites and feeding stations; health assessments of vultures; interviews with government officials, hunters, and wildlife traders to collect data on threats; and satellite transmitter vests on four birds to assess ranging patterns.

The findings: while Cambodia's vulture populations remain robust, the use of poison by hunters and fishers for capturing other species are leading to unintended vulture mortalities. According to the data, 74 percent of the 42 recorded mortalities during the study period were attributable to poison. Direct persecution (the shooting of vultures with guns and slingshots) was also significant, accounting for 10 percent of recorded vulture mortality.

The extreme importance of Cambodia's vulture population was created by an ecological disaster across Asia due largely to the veterinary drug diclofenac. Widely used as an anti-inflammatory drug for cattle in South Asia, diclofenac is toxic to vultures, causing death through renal failure and visceral gout to birds that feed on the cattle carcasses. It has led to a global population declines higher than 99 percent in some vulture species.

So far, the drug has not impacted the vulture populations of Cambodia because diclofenac is not used. WCS and other partners have actually recorded increases in some species of vulture in these areas. However, vultures in Cambodia are largely dependent on domestic animals for food, as populations of wild species such as gaur and Eld's deer remain low.

"Fortunately, the Royal Government of Cambodia has instituted measures to ban diclofenac to ensure the survival of these important birds," said Joe Walston, Director of WCS's Asia Program. "The challenge now is to reduce the indirect and direct persecution of vultures, specifically from poisoning and shooting, and longer-term pressures from habitat loss."

The slender-billed vulture, white-rumped vulture, and red-headed vulture are all listed as "Critically Endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Juror: Sandusky accusers' credibility boosted case

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? The credibility of the accusers who testified at the trial of Jerry Sandusky solidified the case against him, a juror said Saturday, a day after the retired Penn State coach once viewed as the successor to Joe Paterno was found guilty on 45 counts of child sex abuse.

"It's hard to judge character on the stand because you don't know these kids," Joshua Harper told NBC's "Today." ''But most were very credible ? I would say all."

"It was very convincing," he added.

After a swift trial and less than two days of deliberations, Sandusky was found guilty Friday. Mandatory minimums mean he will likely die in prison.

Sanduksy's own impassivity as the verdict was read was also a confirmation that the jury's decision was the right one, Harper said.

"I looked at him during the reading of the verdict and just the look on his face. No real emotion," he said.

Sandusky appeared to be accepting his fate, Harper said, "because he knew it was true."

The verdict is not the end of the scandal that took down Paterno and deeply shook the state's most prominent university. It will play out for years in courtrooms and through a set of ongoing investigations.

But the trial did present one piece of finality: Sandusky was taken away in handcuffs to the county jail. Sentencing will be in about three months.

Sandusky is one 272 inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility and was kept under watch overnight. The jail is just seven miles from the Penn State campus.

Like other inmates there, he was allowed to bring a small number of items in with him. The options include six pairs of white underwear, white socks and white undershirts, prescription glasses or contact lenses, a wedding band, religious prayer book, no more than 10 personal photographs and 10 letters and no more than 4 inches of legal documents or materials.

Sandusky will be allowed to shower daily, and can get visits from his family, friends and lawyers, too.

The jail did not say whether anyone had come to see him Saturday. At his home, his wife and three of their adopted children remained inside after returning there Friday night. The windows blinds and curtains were drawn.

"One of the recurring themes in this case was, 'Who would believe a kid?'" Attorney General Linda Kelly said. "The answer is, we in Bellefonte, Pa., would believe a kid."

Sandusky, a retired defensive coach, showed little emotion as the verdict was read, giving his wife, Dottie, and family members a half-wave as the county sheriff led him away.

There were only three acquittals among the charges related to 10 victims, eight of whom took the stand to describe fondling, forced oral sex and anal rape. Many of the accusers testified that they had told no one of the abuse that dated as far back as the mid-1990s ? not parents, not girlfriends and not police.

The accuser known in court papers as Victim 6, whose mother alerted authorities in 1998 after Sandusky took her son into a shower, broke down in tears upon hearing the verdicts in the courtroom. Afterward, a prosecutor embraced him and said, "Did I ever lie to you?"

The man, now 25, testified that Sandusky called himself the "tickle monster" in a shower assault. He declined to comment to a reporter afterward. His mother said: "Nobody wins. We've all lost."

One of the three counts for which Sandusky was acquitted concerned Victim 6, an indecent assault charge. The man testified that Sandusky had given him a bear hug in the shower but at one point he just "blacked out."

The other acquittals were an indecent assault charge related to Victim 5, who said Sandusky fondled him in the shower, and an involuntary deviate sexual intercourse charge regarding Victim 2, the boy graduate assistant Mike McQueary saw being attacked in a campus shower.

That charge resulted in an acquittal because McQueary did not see penetration, Harper said. But, Harper said, McQueary made it apparent he saw something "that was wrong and extremely sexual."

"We did not have the evidence that that very first charge happened," Harper said. "... And we were in agreement amongst all the jurors that because of that, we could not convict him of that first count."

Almost immediately after the judge adjourned, loud cheers could be heard from a couple hundred people gathered outside the courthouse as word quickly spread that Sandusky had been convicted. The crowd included victim advocates and local residents with their kids. Many held up their smartphones to take pictures as people filtered out of the building.

As Sandusky was placed in the cruiser to be taken to jail, someone yelled at him to "rot in hell!" Others hurled insults and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on the courthouse steps when he said, "The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence."

In addition to the eight who testified, there were two yet-unidentified victims for whom prosecutors relied on testimony from a university janitor and McQueary, whose account of a sexual encounter between Sandusky and a boy of about 10 years old ultimately led to the Paterno's dismissal and the university president's ouster.

Sandusky did not take the stand in his own defense.

After the verdict was announced, defense attorney Karl Rominger said it was "a tough case" with a lot of charges and that an appeal was certain. He said the defense team "didn't exactly have a lot of time to prepare."

The ex-coach had repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense suggested that his accusers had a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact. His attorneys also painted Sandusky as the victim of overzealous police investigators who coached the alleged victims into giving accusatory statements.

One accuser testified that Sandusky molested him in the locker-room showers and in hotels while trying to ensure his silence with gifts and trips to bowl games. He also said Sandusky had sent him "creepy love letters."

Another spoke of forced oral sex and instances of rape in the basement of Sandusky's home, including abuse that left him bleeding. He said he once tried to scream for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but figured the basement must be soundproof.

Another, a foster child, said Sandusky warned that he would never see his family again if he ever told anyone what happened.

And just hours after the case went to jurors, lawyers for one of Sandusky's six children, Matt, said he had told authorities that his father abused him.

Matt Sandusky had been prepared to testify on behalf of prosecutors, his lawyers said in a statement. The lawyers said they arranged for Matt Sandusky to meet with law enforcement officials but did not explain why he didn't testify.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy," the statement said. It didn't go into details about his allegations.

Defense witnesses, including Dottie Sandusky, described Sandusky's philanthropic work with children over the years, and many spoke in positive terms about his reputation in the community. Prosecutors had portrayed those efforts as an effective means by which Sandusky could camouflage his molestation as he targeted boys who were the same age as participants in The Second Mile, a charity he founded in the 1970s for at-risk youth.

Sandusky's arrest in November led the Penn State trustees to fire Paterno as head coach, saying he exhibited a lack of leadership after fielding a report from McQueary. The scandal also led to the ouster of university President Graham Spanier and criminal charges against two university administrators for failing to properly report suspected child abuse and perjury.

The two administrators, athletic director Tim Curley and now-retired vice president Gary Schultz, are fighting the allegations and await trial.

The family of Paterno, who died exactly five months before Sandusky's conviction, released a statement saying: "Although we understand the task of healing is just beginning, today's verdict is an important milestone. The community owes a measure of gratitude to the jurors for their diligent service. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families."

In a statement, Penn State praised the accusers who testified and said that it planned to invite the victims of Sandusky's abuse to participate in a private program to address their concerns and compensate them for claims related to the school.

Sandusky had initially faced 52 counts of sex abuse. Prosecutors dropped one count and the judge tossed three others during the trial, on grounds two were unproven, one was brought under a statute that didn't apply and another was duplicative.

Benefits and drawbacks connected with flat roofing

Flat roofs really possess a small slope to prevent build-up of rain water. Rain water may well cause harm to your roof including leakages, cracks, as well as rusting.

You can expect roofs that do experience a problem with "pooling" or "ponding" of water, to deteriorate that much more quickly. Polished wood, embellished ceilings or maybe wall surfaces may be spoiled if your flat roofing does start to leak as a result of inadequate drainage.

A flat roof demands significantly less material and labour so is quite a bit cheaper to install than a pitched rooftop but if it is not regularly maintained it may cost more in repairs in the long run.

Snow can accumulate on this form of roof structure instead of dropping off and flat roofs fall in more often than others beneath the weight. In britain where we're not usually subjected to heavy snow fall like several other places around the world this occurs much less usually.

A flat roof structure will often make a good space to setup an eco-friendly roof or even install solar cells.

Though Flat rooftops are generally not well suited for our summer although can reduce energy cost in winters. It can make the household even warmer as it absorbs more of the sun's heat compared to a pitched roof top.

Flat roofs might have a shorter life span as compared with a pitched roof based on precisely what materials are used.

Sheer roofs normally form awkward wall surfaces that can not be used within the residence. Flat versions eliminate this issue. Flat roofs tend to make potential flooring additions more economical and simpler, if needed.

The materials now utilised by the vast majority of credible flat roofing companies have vastly improved and at present are usually tough and highly technical. These kinds of materials tend to be routinely used alongside insulating material as well as other products such as roof top lighting, fascias, cladding and rainwater goods to optimize the efficiency and life expectancy of newly installed rooftops. If you're going to add roofing to your dwelling or wooden garden shed, be certain to consider all the choices and get guidance from a professional roofer.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
