(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI basked in an emotional send-off Wednesday from an estimated 150,000 people at his final general audience in St. Peter's Square, recalling moments of "joy and light" during his papacy and also times of difficulty when "it seemed like the Lord was sleeping."

The crowd, many toting banners saying "Grazie!" ("Thank you!"), jammed the piazza to bid Benedict farewell and hear his final speech as pontiff. In this appointment, which he has kept each week for eight years to teach the world about the Catholic faith, Benedict thanked his flock for respecting his retirement, which takes effect Thursday.

Benedict clearly enjoyed the occasion, taking a long victory lap around the square in an open-sided car and stopping to kiss and bless half a dozen children handed to him by his secretary. Seventy cardinals, some tearful, sat in solemn attendance ? then gave him a standing ovation at the end of his speech.

Benedict made a quick exit, foregoing the typical meet-and-greet session that follows the audience as if to not prolong the goodbye.

Given the historic moment, Benedict also changed course and didn't produce his typical professorial Wednesday catechism lesson. Rather, he made his final public appearance in St. Peter's a personal one, explaining once again why he was becoming the first pope in 600 years to resign and urging the faithful to pray for his successor.

"To love the church means also to have the courage to take difficult, painful decisions, always keeping the good of the church in mind, not oneself," Benedict said to thundering applause.

He noted that a pope has no privacy: "He belongs always and forever to everyone, to the whole church." But he promised that in retirement he would not be returning to private life ? instead taking on a new experience of service to the church through prayer.

He recalled that when he was elected pope on April 19, 2005, he questioned if God truly wanted it.

"'It's a great burden that you've placed on my shoulders,'" he recalled telling God.

During his eight years as pope, Benedict said he had had "moments of joy and light, but also moments that haven't been easy ... moments of turbulent seas and rough winds, as has occurred in the history of the church when it seemed like the Lord was sleeping."

But he said he never felt alone, that God always guided him, and he thanked his cardinals and colleagues for their support and for "understanding and respecting this important decision."

The pope's eight-year tenure has been beset by the clerical sex abuse scandal, discord over everything from priestly celibacy to women's ordination, and most recently the betrayal by his own butler who stole his private papers and leaked them to a journalist.

Under a bright sun and blue skies, the square was overflowing with pilgrims and curiosity-seekers. Those who couldn't get in picked spots along the main boulevard leading to the square to watch the event on giant TV screens. About 50,000 tickets were requested for Benedict's final master class. In the end, the Vatican estimated that 150,000 people flocked to the farewell.

"It's difficult ? the emotion is so big," said Jan Marie, a 53-year-old Roman in his first years as a seminarian. "We came to support the pope's decision."

With chants of "Benedetto!" erupting often, the mood was far more buoyant than during the pope's final Sunday blessing. It recalled the jubilant turnouts that often accompanied him at World Youth Days and events involving his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

Benedict has said he decided to retire after realizing that, at 85, he simply didn't have the "strength of mind or body" to carry on.

"I have taken this step with the full understanding of the seriousness and also novelty of the decision, but with a profound serenity in my soul," Benedict told the crowd.

Benedict will meet Thursday morning with cardinals for a final time, then fly by helicopter to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

There, at 8 p.m., the doors of the palazzo will close and the Swiss Guards in attendance will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church over ? for now.

Many of the cardinals who will choose Benedict's successor were in St. Peter's Square for his final audience. Those included retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, the object of a grass-roots campaign in the U.S. to persuade him to recuse himself for having covered up for sexually abusive priests. Mahony has said he will be among the 115 cardinals voting on who the next pope should be.

"God bless you," Mahony said when asked by television crews about the campaign.

Also in attendance Wednesday were cardinals over 80, who can't participate in the conclave but will participate in meetings next week to discuss the problems facing the church and the qualities needed in a new pope.

"I am joining the entire church in praying that the cardinal electors will have the help of the Holy Spirit," Spanish Cardinal Julian Herranz, 82, said.

Herranz has been authorized by the pope to brief voting-age cardinals on his investigation into the leaks of papal documents that exposed corruption in the Vatican administration.

Vatican officials say cardinals will begin meeting Monday to decide when to set the date for the conclave.

But the rank-and-file faithful in the crowd weren't so concerned with the future; they wanted to savor the final moments with the pope they have known for years.

"I came to thank him for the testimony that he has given the church," said Maria Cristina Chiarini, a 52-year-old homemaker who traveled by train from Lugo in central Italy with about 60 members of her parish. "There's nostalgia, human nostalgia, but also comfort, because as a Christian we have hope. The Lord won't leave us without a guide."

Mountains can influence lake-effect snow

Jim Steenburgh, University of Utah

Erik Steenburgh of Salt Lake City skis deep powder during a lake-effect snowstorm at Alta Ski Area in Utah's Wasatch Range in April 2011. Steenburgh is the son of Jim Steenburgh, a University of Utah atmospheric scientist.

By Andrea Thompson
LiveScience

Those who live around the Great Lakes are very familiar with the snow those bodies of water can bring, a phenomenon called lake-effect snow. But a new study suggests that lakes aren't always the only feature behind the falling flakes.

Nearby mountains can enhance or dampen a lake-effect storm, depending on where they sit in relation to the lake, and they may even be necessary to trigger some lake-effect snowfall, the study finds.

University of Utah researchers explored the role that local topography plays in driving lake-effect snow with computer simulations of a lake-effect storm around Utah's Great Salt Lake, even with the relatively gentle terrain around the lake.

"It is going to help us with weather prediction? helping forecasters recognize that in some lake-effect events, the mountains or hills can play an important role in triggering lake-effect snow bands" over large bodies of water, study author Jim Steenburgh said in a university release.

Mountains' influence
Here's how the lake effect works: A cold air mass moves over a large body of water that is warm in comparison (because more heat has to be released to change the temperature of water than air); the air picks up moisture and heat, then rises. As it does so, the air cools, and the moisture it contains condenses out, forming snow if the air is cold enough.

Jim Steenburgh, University of Utah

This map shows how mountains surrounding Utah's Great Salt Lake interact with the lake to cause some "lake-effect" snowstorms. Air masses from the north-northwest are channeled by mountains north of the lake so they converge above the lake. The air picks up heat and moisture from the lake, so it rises, cools and produces snow as it is funneled into the Salt Lake Valley by surrounding mountains.

It was previously known that lake-effect snow could intensify as it moved up over a mountain, which further cools the air and forces more moisture out over the highlands. But the simulations of lake-effect storms around the Great Salt Lake that Steenburgh and his colleagues ran showed that sometimes the influence of the mountains extended below the high mountain altitudes, triggering snow over lowlands and the lake itself when the mountains were downstream of the body of water. [The World's Weirdest Weather]

In other cases, mountains upstream of the lake dampened the lake-effect snow, because the cold air descending down the side of the mountain warmed and dried before it hit the lake. This resulted in less snow fall than if the mountains weren't present.

The configuration of mountains can also force together cold air masses, making them converge over the lake.

"Most people recognize that mountains get more precipitation than lowlands, because of moist air being lifted over the mountains," Steenburgh said in the release. "Everybody recognizes that it plays a role in lake-effect storms. What we're showing here is a situation where the terrain is complicated. There are multiple mountain barriers, not just one, and they affect the air flow in a way that influences the development of the lake-effect storm over the lake and lowlands, rather than just over the mountains."

Missing from models
This unrecognized ability of the mountains to both dampen and trigger snow could help explain why forecasters have difficulty predicting the occurrence of lake-effect storms and how much snow they will drop?on Utah's cities, Steenburgh said. The models currently used don't adequately include the Wasatch Range or the northern mountains along the Nevada-Idaho-Utah border.

Gaining a better idea of the factors influencing lake-effect snow will help forecasters better predict the traffic snarls the weather can cause, as well as the fresh snow it can provide to ski resorts.

"These influences need to be better represented in weather forecast models," Steenburgh told OurAmazingPlanet in an email.

The new study was published Feb. 18 in the American Meteorological Society's journal, Monthly Weather Review.

Analysis: Emerging deadly virus demands swift sleuth work

LONDON | Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:34am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - The emergence of a deadly virus previously unseen in humans that has already killed half those known to be infected requires speedy scientific detective work to figure out its potential.

Experts in virology and infectious diseases say that while they already have unprecedented detail about the genetics and capabilities of the novel coronavirus, or NCoV, what worries them more is what they don't know.

The virus, which belongs to the same family as viruses that cause the common cold and the one that caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), emerged in the Middle East last year and has so far killed seven of the 13 people it is known to have infected worldwide.

Of those, six have been in Saudi Arabia, two in Jordan, and others in Britain and Germany linked to travel in the Middle East or to family clusters.

"What we know really concerns me, but what we don't know really scares me," said Michael Osterholm, director of the U.S.-based Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy and a professor at the University of Minnesota.

Less than a week after identifying NCoV in September last year in a Qatari patient at a London hospital, scientists at Britain's Health Protection Agency had sequenced part of its genome and mapped out a so-called "phylogenetic tree" - a kind of family tree - of its links.

Swiftly conducted scientific studies by teams in Switzerland, Germany and elsewhere have found that NCoV is well adapted to infecting humans and may be treatable medicines similar to the ones used for SARS, which emerged in China in 2002 and killed a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected.

"Partly because of the way the field has developed post-SARS, we've been able to get onto this virus very early," said Mike Skinner, an expert on coronaviruses from Imperial College London. "We know what it looks like, we know what family it's from and we have its complete gene sequence."

Yet there are many unanswered questions.

SPOTLIGHT ON SAUDI ARABIA, JORDAN

"At the moment we just don't know whether the virus might actually be quite widespread and it's just a tiny proportion of people who get really sick, or whether it's a brand new virus carrying a much greater virulence potential," said Wendy Barclay, a flu virologist, also at Imperial College London.

To have any success in answering those questions, scientists and health officials in affected countries such as Saudi Arabia and Jordan need to conduct swift and robust epidemiological studies to find out whether the virus is circulating more widely in people but causing milder symptoms.

This would help establish whether the 13 cases seen so far are the most severe and represent "the tip the iceberg", said Volker Thiel of the Institute of Immunobiology at Kantonal Hospital in Switzerland, who published research this month showing NCoV grows efficiently in human cells.

Scientists and health officials in the Middle East and Arab Peninsular also need to collaborate with colleagues in Europe, where some NCoV cases have been treated and where samples have gone to specialist labs, to try to pin down the virus' source.

"ONE BIG VIROLOGICAL BLENDER"

Initial scientific analysis by laboratory scientists at Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) - which helped identify the virus in a Qatari patient in September last year - found that NCoV's closest relatives are most probably bat viruses.

It is not unusual for viruses to jump from animals to humans and mutate in the process - high profile examples include the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS and the H1N1 swine flu which caused a pandemic in 2009 and 2010.

Yet further work by a research team at the Robert Koch Institute at Germany's University of Bonn now suggests it may have come through an intermediary - possibly goats.

In a detailed case study of a patient from Qatar who was infected with NCoV and treated in Germany, researchers said the man reported owning a camel and a goat farm on which several goats had been ill with fevers before he himself got sick.

Osterholm noted this, saying he would "feel more comfortable if we could trace back all the cases to an animal source".

If so, it would mean the infections are just occasional cross-overs from animals, he said - a little like the sporadic cases of bird flu that continue to pop up - and would suggest the virus has not yet established a reservoir in humans.

Yet recent evidence from a cluster of cases in a family in Britain strongly suggests NCoV can be passed from one person to another and may not always come from an animal source.

An infection in a British man who had recently travelled to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, reported on February 11, was swiftly followed by two more British cases in the same family in people who had no recent travel history in the Middle East.

The World Health Organization says the new cases show the virus is "persistent" and HPA scientists said the cluster provided "strong evidence" that NCoV, which like other coronaviruses probably spreads in airborne droplets, can pass from one human to another "in at least some circumstances".

Despite this, Ian Jones, a professor of virology at Britain's University of Reading, said he believes "the most likely outcome for the current infections is a dead end" - with the virus petering out and becoming extinct.

Others say they fear that is unlikely.

"There's nothing in the virology that tells us this thing is going to stop being transmitted," said Osterholm. "Today the world is one big virological blender. And if it's sustaining itself (in humans) in the Middle East then it will show up around the rest of the world. It's just a matter of time."

Texting Gloves Dangerous in Winter, Says expert

Feb. 26, 2013 ? The popular half-gloves that leave fingers uncovered for texting may be good for communicating electronically but they may also lead to permanent loss of fingers due to exposure to the cold.

"Fingers are one of the first body parts to feel the effects of the cold and damp and along with toes, ears and the nose are frequently subjected to frostbite and even amputation," says Arthur Sanford, MD, Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Burns, Loyola University Health System. "Better to fat finger a text due to wearing winter gloves than to lose a finger due to the cold."

Frostbite is most likely to happen in body parts farthest from the heart and those with large exposed areas. "Blood vessels start to constrict at or below 32 degrees Celsius to preserve body temperature," says Sanford. "The lack of blood in areas of the body can lead to freezing and the death of skin tissue."

Sanford says he treats frostbite in people of all ages. "The old lady who goes out in the snow to get her mail, falls, breaks a hip and lays in the cold and wet for hours until being discovered is a typical victim of frostbite," he says. "But the younger person who goes on a drinking bender and walks home in the snow and damp is also a familiar sight at Loyola trauma."

When suffering from prolonged exposure to cold, use room temperature or slightly warm water to gently revitalize the body. "Do not use hot water, do not rub with handfuls of snow and do not vigorously massage the frozen area," warns Sanford. Overstimulation can actually worsen the situation.

Winter wellness tips from Sanford and Loyola include the following:

? Dress in layers. "If a sweater, pair of socks or other article of clothing gets wet, you can quickly remove it and still be protected from the cold and wet," says Sanford.

? Wear a hat, gloves or mittens and proper footwear including socks and boots. "Texting gloves may look cool and be handy for communicating but it is better to wear full gloves or mittens and save your fingers," says Sanford.

? When outerwear becomes wet, go inside and change to dry clothing. "Wet socks especially are dangerous and can lead to a condition called trench foot which results in poor blood circulation, decay of tissue, infections and even amputation," says Sanford.

? If affected area becomes numb, turns red or blue, swells or feels hot, go to the emergency department. "An emergency physician will assess the tissue and take the proper steps to save the body part," says Sanford.

Hypothermia, when the body temperature is below 95 degrees F(35 degrees C), was the cause of death for 700 Americans between 1979 -- 1998. "Frostbite in January, operate in July is a common mantra here at Loyola," says Sanford. "Bundling up for winter may take you out of media circulation temporarily but better that than to permanently lose the ability to text due to frostbite."

Prenatal DHA reduces early preterm birth, low birth weight

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

University of Kansas researchers have found that the infants of mothers who were given 600 milligrams of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA during pregnancy weighed more at birth and were less likely to be very low birth weight and born before 34 weeks gestation than infants of mothers who were given a placebo. This result greatly strengthens the case for using the dietary supplement during pregnancy.

Susan CarlsonThe results are from the first five years of a 10-year, double-blind randomized controlled trial to be published in the April issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It is also available online. A followup of this sample of infants is ongoing to determine whether prenatal DHA nutritional supplementation will benefit children's intelligence and school readiness.

"A reduction in early preterm and very low birth weight delivery could have clear clinical and public health significance," said Susan Carlson, A.J. Rice Professor of Dietetics and Nutrition at the KU Medical Center, who directed the study with John Colombo, KU professor of psychology and director of the Life Span Institute.

John Colombo"We believe that supplementing U.S. women with DHA could safely increase mean birth weight and gestational age to numbers that are closer to other developed countries such as Norway and Australia," she said.

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) occurs naturally in cell membranes with the highest levels in brain cells, but levels can be increased by diet or supplements. An infant obtains DHA from his or her mother in utero and postnatally from human milk, but the amount received depends upon the mother's DHA status.

"U.S. women typically consume less DHA than women in most of the developed world," said Carlson.

During the first five years of the study, children of women enrolled in the study received multiple developmental assessments at regular intervals throughout infancy and at 18 months of age. In the next phase of the study, the children will receive twice-yearly assessments until they are 6 years old. The researchers will measure developmental milestones that occur in later childhood and are linked to lifelong health and welfare.

Previous research has established the effects of postnatal feeding of DHA on infant cognitive and intellectual development, but DHA is accumulated most rapidly in the fetal brain during pregnancy, said Colombo. "That's why we are so interested in the effects of DHA taken prenatally, because we will really be able to see how this nutrient affects development over the long term."

PhD's National Education Index | International Law Observer | A ...

The Education Index is the only college database of its kind on the web. Using consistent, updated data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the index allows students to search for and rank college programs in the U.S. using special filters. The data spans both undergraduate and graduate institutions at all degree levels.

Syria opposition spurns U.S., Russia invitations

The main Syrian opposition grouping has said it turned down invitations to visit Washington and Moscow to protest what it described as international silence over destruction of the ancient city of Aleppo by Syrian missile strikes.

A statement late on Friday by the Syrian National Coalition, an umbrella group of opposition political forces, said it also had suspended participation in a Friends of Syria conference of international powers due in Rome next month to protest the attacks it said have caused many civilian casualties.

"Hundreds or civilians have been killed by Scud missile strikes. Aleppo, the city and the civilization, is being destroyed systematically," the statement said.

"The Russian leadership especially bears moral and political responsibility for supplying the regime with weapons," it added, referring to Moscow's status as a leading ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"In protest of this shameful international stand, the coalition has decided to suspend its participation in the Rome conference for the Friends of Syria and decline the invitations to visit Russia and the United States."

The invitations had been extended to opposition coalition leader Mouaz Alkhatib after he met the Russian and U.S. foreign ministers in Munich this month.

The invitations were made shortly after Alkhatib offered to negotiate Assad's departure with members of the Syrian government who were not tainted by having participated in the crackdown on the 23-month-long revolt.

Rocket attacks on eastern districts of Aleppo, Syria's industrial and commercial hub, killed at least 29 people on Friday and trapped a family of 10 in the ruins of their home, opposition activists in the city said.

On Tuesday activists said at least 20 people were killed when a large missile hit the rebel-held district of Jabal Badro, also in the east of the contested city.

What Is Covert Surveillance?

Covert surveillance essentially means watching something or someone without their knowledge. The Security Services carryout surveillance on suspected criminals or terrorists, Councils can carryout surveillance on suspected benefit cheats or private companies may carryout surveillance on employees they suspect of wrongdoing. Covert surveillance can be a powerful way to gather information which, when collated and analyzed along with other information, can help to inform you about a situation or a persons behaviour.

There are many ways of conducting surveillance operations. Modern technology has provided a whole raft of extra capability, including covert cameras or listening devices or the ability to snoop on peoples email or online communications although this latter one is only really available to police or security services who have a warrant! There are also the more 'traditional' ways of carrying out covert surveillance. One, which any avid viewer of police type movies or police shows before this decade will be more than familiar with, is the physical covert surveillance method which tends to see the surveillance operator following the target either on foot or in a vehicle and observing where they go and who they meet.

Although covert surveillance sounds quite an easy thing to do, it can be fraught with problems. Firstly, knowing whether your target is aware they are or maybe under surveillance will heavily influence how you carryout and plan your operation. Also understanding what the end result will be. Will the surveillance form part of an investigation that could see its result's been used in court? And then there are the moral questions. Whilst most people support the activities of the security services that target dangerous elements of society as they look to protect us, surveillance carried out on a suspected errant husband falls into different category.

Carrying out covert surveillance on a partner who is suspected of cheating can be construed as significant invasion of privacy and should not be undertaken lightly but it can also provide categorical evidence of the truth. Ensuring a correctly planned operation, with properly analyzed results is essential to getting to the truth, which is un-swayed and unbiased.

What is the different between covert and overt surveillance? Whilst covert surveillance is aimed at catching people's real behaviour and attitudes, overt surveillance aims at moderating and shaping peoples behaviour to ensure it is socially acceptable and does not intrude negatively on people around them. It also acts as an effective deterrent where people looking to break the law, or do something morally wrong, will look for another location or target when faced with the real possibility of being caught in the act.

Intelligent Investigations don't just look to provide you with information, we provide you with intelligence which you can base your decisions on with confidence. Whether that's for hiring a new employee, tracing a missing person or a decision to stay or leave your partner, we can provide you with accurate and timely intelligence.

Ex-mayor and manager seeks LHS headmaster post

LOWELL -- Former Mayor and City Manager Brian Martin has officially announced he will apply to fill the vacant position as Lowell High headmaster.

"I think the high school is a great school. It's the flagship school for the Lowell Public Schools. I think that I would have an awful lot to offer as a leader of the school," Martin, who is a 1968 graduate of the school, said.

Martin, 62, has worked as U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas' senior advisor and district director for the past seven years.

He said he has the congresswoman's blessing to apply.

Martin is a former teacher and was the high school athletic director. He comes from a family of educators.

Superintendent of Schools Jean Franco did not renew Headmaster Ed Rozmiarek's contract, which expires June 30.

"I hope I can convince the selection committee that I'm the right person," he said.

Twitter account of Pistorius' brother hacked

A hacker falsely posted on the Twitter account of Oscar Pistorius' older brother Saturday that the South African Olympian was going to do media interviews, a family spokeswoman said.

Carl Pistorius didn't post such a tweet, and he and his sister, Aimee, were cancelling all their social media accounts Saturday, said family spokeswoman Janine Hills. All three Pistorius siblings live in South Africa, she said.

On Friday, Oscar Pistorius was freed from jail on bail eight days after the shooting death of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, 29.

Pistorius, 26, is charged with premeditated murder in her February 14 death.

"It is most unfortunate that during this sensitive time, someone would choose to hack into Oscar Pistorius older brother, Carl Pistorius' Twitter handle," Hills said in a statement. "Carl did not tweet this afternoon, out of respect to Oscar and Reeva."

Hills said she heard on a South Africa radio station that Carl Pistorius' Twitter account stated that Oscar Pistorius was going to speak to the media.

"This is untrue," Hills told CNN in a separate interview. "I spoke to Oscar myself. He has not spoken to anybody and does not plan on doing any interviews."

The hacking apparently occurred Saturday afternoon, she said.

Meanwhile, Oscar Pistorius' family and friends expressed "immense relief" Saturday about how he was freed on bail, a relative said.

"What happened has changed our lives irrevocably," said Arnold Pistorius, the athlete's uncle, referring to the events surrounding Steenkamp's death.

Could an Avocado a Day Keep the Doctor Away?

Eating avocados regularly may improve the quality of your diet and some key heath markers, according to a new analysis.

After crunching the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 to 2008, researchers found that eating avocados was associated with an overall better-quality diet; higher levels of HDL (the "good" cholesterol); a lower risk of metabolic syndrome; and a lower body weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference.

Metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of symptoms, raises a person's risk for heart disease. The symptoms include blood pressure higher than 130/85 mmHg; a fasting blood glucose level of 100 mg/dL or higher; a waist circumference of 40 inches or more in men and 35 inches or more in women; HDL ("good") cholesterol levels of less than 40 mg/dL in men and less than 50 mg/dL in women; and triglyceride levels of 150 mg/dL or higher. A person with three or more of these symptoms is diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.

The Hass Avocado Board supported the study. Findings were published in the recent issue of Nutrition Journal.

For the current analysis, researchers examined the diet quality of 17,567 adults ages 19 and older who participated in the NHANES survey. Of these, 347 (2 percent) ate avocados. Their mean daily avocado intake was about half of a medium avocado, containing about 114 calories, half of which come from fat.

NHANES interviewers gathered nutrition information based on 24-hour dietary recalls. The NHANES program of studies regularly assesses the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. Researchers calculated diet quality using the USDA's Healthy Eating Index, which indicates how closely diets follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The study reported that people who ate avocados had significantly higher intakes of fruits and vegetables in general, and lower intakes of added sugars. The avocado eaters also had higher intakes of total fat, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, dietary fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium and vitamin K, along with a lower intake of carbohydrates.

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, which has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Previous research elsewhere has found an estimated 19 percent reduction in the risk of coronary disease when the intake of monounsaturated fat is increased by 5 percent, the current researchers wrote.?

Avocado eaters also fared well in the weight department. People who ate avocados weighed on average about 8 pounds less than non-avocado eaters. The avocado group also had a lower BMI, 26.7 versus 28.4, and their waists were about 2 inches narrower. Finally, these respondents had higher HDL levels: an average of 55 mg/dL compared to 52.6 mg/dL for people who didn?t eat avocados.

The study does not prove a cause and effect relationship, only an association. The researchers acknowledge that the people in the study may not have accurately recalled what they ate; what's more, the pool of avocado eaters was small.

Still, the results are intriguing. "These findings suggest a role for avocados in improving dietary quality and possibly reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome in the United States," the researchers wrote. "Further research is needed to verify this epidemiological data and study the potential association between increased intake of avocados and other dietary components."

Pass it on: Eating avocados may raise "good cholesterol" levels, lower BMI and reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Kristen Stweart & Robert Pattinson To Split After DVD Release

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are rumored to be dunzo. Honestly I was surprised they ever got back together. But now, shady business is happening. Apparently the two have been over for? awhile, but are going to announce the split after the DVD release of Breaking Dawn? Part 2. As if anyone cares?? I don’t see how it would affect DVD sales, if anything it may increase them when the fans realize RPatz is single and ready to mingle!People may even be excited that he decided to move on and take a stand against his cheating ex.   But the fact that I read that they would call it quits after the DVD release, way back before it was even released in theaters.   [Blind Gossip] Everyone is so excited that these two lovebirds are back together! Sorry, but that kind of naivete is going to come back to bite you on the butt. Why? Because their reunion is both fake and temporary. We told you before that they their original coupling took place in a publicist?s office. They became good friends, but nothing more. If they look like they are in love, it is only because they are actors. [...]

James Marsden Joins Anchorman: The Legend Continues

James Marsden 541x360 James Marsden Is Rival Newsman In Anchorman: The Legend Continues

I?m trying really hard to control my excitement for Anchorman: The Legend Continues. I know that sequels to beloved originals ? especially comedies ? are often disappointments. I know the lightning rarely strikes in the same place twice. I know ? but I can hope. This latest news, though, makes it really difficult for me not to run around the apartment screaming ?You guys! You Guys! Seriously! Oh my God, you guys!? Because James Marsden has been cast as Ron Burgundy?s nemesis.

The only information that we have right now is that Marsden has been cast as a rival anchor, but of course that could mean anything. What is exciting about this is that it?s another, excellent addition to the original cast ? which includes Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and Christina Applegate, all back in their original parts. Marsden has proven that he can play comedy, even if the film surrounding him sometimes leaves something to be desired (I?m looking at you, Sex Drive). And who better to stand up again Burgundy than the quaffed, blue-eyed Marsden with his giga-watt smile? I can see all kinds of comedic possibilities here.

Marsden is a confirmed addition to the cast, joining fellow newcomer Kristen Wiig, who we think is playing Brick Tamland?s (Steve Carell) wife. Nice to see some quality newbies joining up with the original team.

We shall have to wait and see what the folks behind Anchorman: The Legend Continues have up their sleeves. Will Marsden team up with Vince Vaughn?s Wes Mantooth? Will Burgundy?s mustache be threatened? And will we have another flute solo? Only director Adam McKay knows for sure.

Production on Anchorman: The Legend Continues begins in March. We?ll keep you updated on casting decisions as they come in. Until then: stay classy, San Diego. (Sorry, I had to do it.)

Common swifts make mysterious twilight ascents

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Common swifts climb to altitudes of up to 2.5 km both at dawn and dusk. This unexpected behaviour was discovered by geo-ecologist Dr Adriaan Dokter of the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) together with colleagues from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), the Royal Netherlands Air Force and Lund University.

The research results were published as a featured article in the March issue of the scientific journal Animal Behaviour.

In the summer, swifts make their presence felt in the city, especially because of the screaming sound they make. These common urban birds appear to have unusual movement patterns. Besides a short breeding period under urban roofing tiles, these birds spend all year on the wing: foraging, mating and even sleeping are all performed in flight. Using a novel radar technique, Dokter and his colleagues studied the nocturnal flight behaviour of the common swift with the assistance of a weather radar belonging to the KNMI.

Dokter explains: 'We always assumed that common swifts ascended in the evening as part of their sleeping cycle. However, now that we have observed the bird perform ascents at both the start and the end of night-time periods, this interpretation seems to be incorrect. The ascents must have a different function, with the birds making use of the unique opportunities offered by the twilight period.'

Common swifts as weather predictors?

Twilight is rich in information: it is the only period allowing simultaneous detection of landscape features, polarization patterns, stars and magnetic cues. This information is used by many different animals for navigational and orientation purposes. Common swifts also seem to choose the twilight to obtain specific information during their ascents. An appealing possibility is that during the ascents, the birds investigate characteristics of the atmosphere in relation to their current location and orientation, such as temperature and wind at various altitudes. This may enable the birds to predict future weather conditions. An adequate response to meteorological conditions is crucial to common swifts, as when foraging they are fully dependent on aerial insects, which are most common in good weather conditions.

Sony Formally Announces PlayStation 4, Proclaims the Most ...

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on Wednesday formally introduced its next-generation PlayStation 4 video game console. As expected, the fourth-generation system will hit the market later this year to lead the PlayStation into its third decade. The new console promises to reimagine the video games with a set of new technologies, features and gaming network never-before-seen by the industry.

?Our vision for the future is consumer-centric, developer-inspired, and characterized by an unwavering commitment to phenomenal play experiences. Today we are revealing the genesis of an expanding ?idea? about the future of play ? an idea with enough potential to satisfy the insatiable appetites of our creative community of developers and gamers,? said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Early during the presentation Sony confirmed general technical specifications that have been discussed recently (it appears that almost everything about the PlayStation 4 technology has been leaked well-ahead of the formal introduction). The new console is based on AMD Fusion system-on-chip with multi-core x86 microprocessor (eight-core AMD Jaguar), PC-derivative graphics processing unit (custom AMD Radeon HD core with unified array of 18 AMD GCN-like compute units [1152 stream processors], which collectively generate 1.84TFLOPS of computer power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two), various special-purpose hardware blocks?as well as multi-channel memory controller.

The PS4 will come with 8GB of unified GDDR5 memory sub-system (with 176GB/s bandwidth) for both CPU and GPU as well as large-capacity hard disk drive. Sony PS4 will be equipped with Blu-ray disc drive capable of reading BDs at 6x and DVDs at 8x speeds, USB 3.0 connectivity in addition to a proprietary aux port, Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR wireless technology as well as HDMI, optical and analog outputs. The new system will also utilize new DualShock 4 game controller with integrated touchpad as well as better motion sensing thanks to new tracking cameras.

Due to to considerably improved graphics and processing horsepower of the PlayStation 4, game developers will be able to design titles with dramatically improved graphics that will get a huge step closer to photorealistic graphics seen in movies. Owing to multi-core microprocessor with decent performance, software makers are now also able to reproduce accurate physics effects and realistic movements of characters to further bring visual appeal of video games closer to that of movies.

Screenshot from Killzone: Shadow Fall by WWS Guerrilla Games

Sony said that it has worked hard to make the PlayStation 4 platform easy to develop new games for. Numerous creators at the event show said they are extremely enthusiastic about the future of the PlayStation platform. Tens of game designers from all around the world, including big names like 2K, Activision, Blizzard(!), Capcom, Electronic Arts, Konami, Sega, Square Enix, and Ubisoft will support the PlayStation 4 with their titles, loads of which will be available in the launch window (November ?13 ? March ?14).

As expected, the forthcoming PlayStation 4 will be tightly integrated with Gaikai cloud gaming services. Since the PS4 will not have native compatibility with the previous-generation PlayStation games, it will use cloud technologies to stream those titles to the new console. The system will also sport improved cross-platform game-play capabilities that will allow PS Vita and PS4 to better work together. For example, the PlayStation 4 will support remote play on PlayStation Vita out-of-the-box.

At the ?See the Future? event Sony also announced plans to stream video games originally developed for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation mobile consoles to different devices using PlayStation Cloud services powered by Gaikai. Sony?s vision it to enable PlayStation games on PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Screenshot from Driveclub game from WWS Evolution Studios

?

Sony also showcased the first titles that will be developed for the PlayStation 4 and its advanced hardware and networking capabilities. The Killzone: Shadow Fall and DriveClub games look like advanced PC titles that exist today; although some compromises in terms of graphics are visible, the geometry models and lighting look extremely realistic. New games by Square Enix and Ubisoft for the PlayStation 4 will sport very rich and big interactive worlds in addition to just realistic graphics, something that will make the next generation of games different from the existing titles.?

SCE will announce new details of PS4 and its robust lineup of games from 3rd party developers and publishers, the independent gaming community and SCE Worldwide Studios, as well as further enhancements to the entire PlayStation ecosystem between now and the holiday 2013 launch.?

?The arrival of PS4 is a critical initiative that presents an enormous opportunity to dramatically evolve the game play experience into something far grander than ever imagined. From enhanced social capabilities to intensified power to realizing bigger, better, and more immersive game play, to the evolution of our ecosystem to meet the requirements for a simpler, more adaptive interface, we believe PS4 proves we have more to offer than ever before,? concluded Mr. House.

if every report checks out to be true about the ps4 then it's going to be a power house of a gaming system and end up blowing away the competition. Sony has done a much better job at rep their ps4 capabilities so far then Microsoft has with the 720 and if the reports of the hardware in the ps4 are true then the ps4 is going to have a much more powerful gpu then the 720 will have, which will make those of us that are intuned to graphics with our gameplay a lot more interested in the ps4 then the 720.

The initial rumors were all that the ps4 would have bulldozer, instead they both have jaguar, and the graphics will be determined significantly by the thermal and power envelope each chip is allowed.

show the post

But guess what ck, Intel don't do graphics. And Nvidia solutions were evidently not as good. So stop moaning. It's 2013 in the midst of The Great Recession.

What does intel have anything to do with this conversation? You are so pro amd you have to bring up amd vs intel in every article?

Initial articles claiming the ps4 was higher powered then the future xbox were based on the belief that the ps4 would be based on bulldozer, which is a more powerfull cpu then jaguar. Both will infact be based on jaguar most likely. I have not said anything against the cpu choice of either console, all I have said is that there is a lot less evidence that the PS4 will be significantly more powerfull then the future xbox, since they both appear to use the same cpu, and graphics will most likely be limited more by thermal and power concerns then the architecture / layout chosen.

it's a custom 8 core jaguar cpu. bulldozer cpu's have a high tdp rating. So even though it won't be as powerful as an fx 8350 in terms of multi-threading performance it will be a decent cpu for consoles. As for the gpu that's where the xbox 720 and ps4 will seeprate themselves.the ps4's gpu will be 1.84TFLOPS the xbox 720 gpu will be 768GFLOPS.

There is tight control over the details on the next gen console market. Its the reason why there were varying degrees of rumors. From that alone it should have been obvious not to set expectations as all the rumors are so different.

@Cashkennedy - Please excuse me but after reading your post beginning thread number 2, it seemed you were having a thinly veiled swipe at AMD's top and newest technology that Sony has selected. But certainly, what I would like to convey is that everything is being done to a price at the moment. We are not in the excesses of 1986 or 2006. Design choice will come down essentially to parts cost vs reasonable performance, not how out-rightly kickass it is. In that regard Nintendo, Sony, and MS can all be defended. Am I pro AMD? Unashamedly and on principle. Nevertheless, I try to balance my views. In the end I want the truth to prevail. I certainly don't want a situation like the Emperor's New Clothes. AMD deserves and needs timely criticism when they stuff up. My bugbears are their crap marketing (poor name choices and fragmented products) and poor execution. In regards to this console, it looks like it has the goods. It needs to run as cool as possible as people normally place them inside poorly ventilated cabinets on which TV's sit.

Sony said it so it's official. Maybe the post was prelaunch but what the gaming community is waiting now is what does Microsoft has to answer to this machine. I guess (and has been reported) the new xbox will be very similar with also a Jaguar CPU on it and very similar graphic card. What will differentiate them hardwarewise are other components complementing CPU and GPU that will be tailored to what that company is trying to deliver like the instaplay chip Sony will use : http://www.joystiq.com/20...es-as-theyre-downloading/
which, with all those cores, could be done in software.

Anyways,

Like it has been since the dinosaurs, it will come down to which exclusive content you cant live without. Love Mario? then that Wii U will have to do or else you are SoL.

Consoles are about content. No matter what PC you have, you will not be able to play an Uncharted or God of War on any other thing than a Sony machine.

Those games were most likely made on high end pc's using SDK from Sony! There is no reason why those games wouldn't run on way better hardware, It's just that they like to have "exclusive content" to sell that console.
In other words marketing bullshit!

Check this out ozegamer. You can preorder a Sony PS4 at EB Games for $900. They wouldn't know the real price yet so they're obviously covering their bases to the max whilst getting some self-promotion in the media at the same time. Cheeky devils.

OMG $900 for a console, That's now approaching the price of a cheap entry level pc. Just heard it can't handle 4k games either, So it's not exactly future proof when the tv's drop in price over next few years. I will stick to the pc and put that $900 towards a high end video card or two for that matter!
Think I payed about $700 for PS3 from memory on 1st day release, $200 more PS4 is kind of pushing it, Especially for the younger crowd out there still at school.
Then again you could also say it's a good thing for us pc gamers, The console is getting expensive so maybe a better investment for parents would be a pc so they can do homework and play games.

thats a bit hypocritical you say you don't rush out and buy a new product yet you have the most recent top of the line gpu.

@Cashkennedy - now you've read me wrong. I wrote "childish" as in your comment. I didn't call you anything. I only reserve name calling for the former jmlxg and avon hardcore trolls. It's childish because your post drips with sarcasm and I reckon you don't work inside the industry and therefore don't know how and why these design decisions were made based on factors like price, contracts, chip fabrication production, engineering integration, software gaming IDE's, etc. If you do know, please write an article for Xbit to enlighten us. Until then, stop taking cheap shots. There is nothing wrong with the technology being employed inside PS4.

I'm surprised to see no techies bring up the fact that this an an AMD design. It's not exactly a true 8 core CPU, just 8 integer schedulers (2 int. schedulers x 4 cores) . Even with it being a customized chip for Sony, it doesn't make sense that AMD would have another architecture different from what they've been doing for the past 2 years. Not that it' a big deal, just we should be aware. In the end, i'm disappointed with the specs. 360/ps3 nearly matched 2005 high-end PC specs. At the very least it will allow all developers to utilize DX11 (sry DX10 no love for you) and thus while we'll still be dealing with console ports, at least it will be simpler for developer to spice up there games for PC. If you were in 2005 and saw what the console could pull off today.......

Nope, I can tell you now, think of it as two Kabinis on the same die, only customized in a grouping that is customer specific. We are taking real 8 Jaguar cores not marketing spin of X x Y = z logic units.

You might be mixing things up with the bulldozer family of chips that share functional units apart from integer blocks.

To get a better idea read this overview here:

U wish it was bulldozer. It's jaguar which is a beefed up bobcat.

this is inocrrect the custom jaguar apu has 8 true cores the lack of L2 cache allows it to have 8 cores on the die.

Hey Steel, may I know which site reported the "lack of L2" cache on the PS4 jaguar cores?

Im wondering how the hell the Jaguar cpu's are going to talk to DDR5 memory since no AMD CPU has anything other than a DDR2/DDR3 memory controller. Perhaps theyre pumping data through the GPU over HyperTransport and then to RAM.

In any event, shared fast memory between CPU and GPU is the next big step in compute hardware. Right now the lag to trasfer data from ram to vram kills nearly all benefits of GPGPU programming.

there is a difference between ddr and GDDR, GDDR5 is based on DDR3 but is optimised for bandwidth and is much wider. so these APU chips will contain a GDDR controller for bout the GPU and CPU.

They have a GDDR5 PHY on die.

The unification is also part of Unified Memory for CPU and GPU by 2013 initiative as part of HSA announced in early 2012.

Yep, HSA is going to go a long way to tablet and laptop perf and perf / watt.
