Pay satisfaction key driver of work-family conflict

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Employees who are more satisfied with their pay report lower levels of work-family conflict, a study by a University of Illinois labor and employment relations professor shows.

A worker's actual salary is as important as pay satisfaction in determining a worker's happiness, according to the research by professor Amit Kramer.

"Pay, as you might expect, is a relative thing," Kramer said. "I think most people would agree that a certain level of pay that allows you to meet your needs is critical. However, beyond that level, relative pay becomes an issue and with it, perception of pay or pay satisfaction."

Kramer, who co-wrote the study with Devasheesh P. Bhave, of Concordia University, and Theresa M. Glomb, of the University of Minnesota, says once workers achieve this "sufficient" level of pay, they shift their reference point from what their actual pay allows them to do, to other social reference points such as how much their peers are paid.

"It becomes 'my pay' compared to others; 'my pay' compared to the effort I invest; 'my pay' compared to the things I give up and miss in life for the opportunity cost of working," he said. "Organizations believe that actual pay is the No. 1 incentive for employees. While this may be true for some employees, for others the social aspects of pay and the things they perceive to be sacrificing for pay are stronger or act as additional incentives and disincentives."

The effect of a pay raise on pay satisfaction only has a moderate relationship, Kramer says.

"I'm not sure that the effect of a pay raise lasts very long," he said. "It might have a short-term effect on pay satisfaction, but individuals are likely to regress to their initial pay satisfaction level over time. As an example, when employees change jobs, they re-evaluate their pay and are more likely to change their pay satisfaction, not necessarily because they get a raise, but because of the social aspect of pay. And the way individuals evaluate their pay is by comparing their pay relative to their co-workers' pay, relative to the effort they put in, and relative to what they sacrifice in order to work."

According to the study, even highly compensated employees report high work-family conflict because they, too, can perceive pay inequity among colleagues. So what can employers do -- if anything -- to increase pay satisfaction among employees?

A lot, Kramer says.

"If employees perceive work as a sacrifice they have to make, then the work environment itself is not ideal," he said. "If employers can understand the trade-offs employees perceive to be doing -- sacrificing family for work, for example -- then they can offer different work arrangements and policies that compensate for that. Flexible work arrangements, paid vacation days and compressed workweeks would be good examples of this. It also might be ideal to tailor policies and benefits based on different needs of employees, since each employee will perceive that they are making different trade-offs."

The only downside to such benefits is that they're expensive, and they usually can't be offered to all employees, Kramer says.

"Firms will usually only offer these type of working arrangements to workers who are expensive to recruit, retain and replace -- the high-performing, star employees," he said.

With Americans among the world leaders in hours worked and worker productivity, Kramer says the research speaks to the need for more family- and life-friendly policies in the workplace.

"In a time when the boundaries between work, life and family are so blurred with the increased use of technology that allows many employees to work everywhere, anytime, I think employers should consider offering flexible work arrangements to employees who can perform their work off-site and off-schedule," he said. "That type of a flexible policy that would allow all employees -- not just those with families -- to better balance work, family and life demands as they see fit."

Family demands can come from many different sources, all of which require different kinds of flexibility, Kramer says.

"Young children demand more emergency-type flexibility -- for example, leaving work on short notice to pickup a sick child from day care, or staying home with a sick child," he said. "Older children require more 'planned' flexibility -- for example, a week of college visits -- while elder parents, like young children, need more short-notice, emergency-type flexibility."

The study will be published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior.

Toronto Maple Leafs Joffrey Lupul set to join KHL during Lockout -NHL Update

Joffrey Lupul became the latest of the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise to leave North America and go on to play in the Russian, Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), as long as the National Hockey League (NHL) is locked out, according to latest reports.

According to the reports and TSN.ca, Lupul is supposedly going to be lacing up to play with last-place KHL team, the Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg. It is not known if there is a special reason with him signing there, but reports are pointing towards that franchise with none saying something else.

Due to a separated shoulder, Lupul played in 66 games last season, missing the final month before the playoffs, but still registered an impressive 67 points (25 goals, 42 assists) and 48 minutes in the penalty box.

"(Lupul) missed the final month of last year and had back issues a couple of years ago and missed a lot of hockey," Lupul's agent, Peter Semonick, told the Post. "He wants to get in and stay in game shape, so for him it's not a matter of money, it's a matter of getting on the ice and trying to get back the time that he's lost."

He was also part of the All-Star roster last time around and has definitely become one of the key members of the Toronto Maple Leafs roster, along with looking to constantly improve due to the missed time over the past couple of seasons.

Lupul is currently signed on with the Toronto Maple Leafs with a four-year, $17 million contract which will end after the 2012-2013 regular season, making him an unrestricted free agent. He was excited for the upcoming season and was one of those players that looked at it as being the opportunity for him to shine and make a shatter comeback.

The 29-year-old native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, was picked up by the Anaheim Ducks as the seventh overall back in round-one of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He has played with not only Anaheim, but also the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs for a total of 515 games played up until now with 323 points (151 goals, 172 assists) under his belt.

Cruise Holidays International Forges Alliance with Quebec ...

Agreement strengthens Cruise Holidays? position in Canada, brings further technology enhancements and vendor opportunities to Groupe Atrium.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) October 25, 2012 -?In an unprecedented level of growth for one of the world?s most far-reaching cruise travel agency franchisors, Cruise Holidays International has announced a new alliance with Quebec-based Groupe Atrium. The agreement provides Groupe Atrium with access to Cruise Holidays?? suite of technology and marketing solutions for its growing franchise network and consortium members across Quebec.

Groupe Atrium, which is made up of the Vasco Travel franchise, the Gama Travel consortium, and Premium Tours, will become Cruise Holidays? master franchisor in Quebec. All franchised agencies and consortium members will continue to operate under their existing brand names.

Vasco Travel was established in 1994, with a reputable presence across the province and more than 90 franchise owners. There are approximately 40 Gama Travel members.

To further reinforce its position as one of Quebec?s strongest travel companies, Groupe Atrium will have the opportunity to implement Cruise Holidays? technology systems, including CruiseWeb ? the company?s fully-integrated back office to front office system ? which offers full cruise booking, customer relationship management and accounting capabilities. Groupe Atrium will also have the option to make use of any other Cruise Holidays programs, such as its website program and layered marketing approach, which have provided Cruise Holidays franchise owners with maximum operating efficiency, control on resources and increased margins. Groupe Atrium will handle translation of Cruise Holidays? marketing pieces from English to French.

Mark Schiffner, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Cruise Holidays, noted this alliance is one that is particularly beneficial for both parties. ?Groupe Atrium, which includes Vasco Travel, Gama Travel and Premium Tours, consists of the definitive cruise and vacation experts in Quebec. Their team will remain as the undisputed experts on the ground in Quebec. We look forward to working together to find and capitalize on new opportunities with this highly successful organization,? said Schiffner.

?Such an alliance, by two entities aiming for the same goal, made total sense for us. Mark and his team are so dedicated to their franchisees that it became obvious to us that we could be a perfect match. We will work together to get even better results!?? said Sylvain Last?re, President of Groupe Atrium.

?We believe that we can share resources around technology and franchisee services, and we share a similar philosophy: that our franchise owners are our collective future,? said Benoit Pichette, Vice President and Directeur G?n?ral of Groupe Atrium.

Groupe Atrium also stands to benefit from Cruise Holidays? position within Travel Leaders Leisure Group, which is a division of Travel Leaders Group. The parent company is a nearly $17 billion (U.S.) travel company that already includes approximately 30% of all travel agencies in the United States and Canada under its umbrella.

?This is a win-win situation for Travel Leaders Leisure Group and Groupe Atrium,? said Tom Baumann, President of Travel Leaders Leisure Group. We look forward to now having an even stronger presence in Canada, especially in Quebec, while Groupe Atrium will enjoy the benefits of being part of one of the world?s top travel companies ? nearly 17 billion dollars strong,? added Baumann.

Only three months ago, Cruise Holidays announced the travel industry?s first-ever North American master franchisor agreement in Australia. Australian-based CruiseMart has now re-branded as Cruise Holidays Australia. Additionally, less than two years ago, Cruise Holidays also added a master franchisor in the United Kingdom, which is now over 50 franchise owners strong, doubling the number of locations in the UK since early 2011. With the addition of the alliance with Groupe Atrium, the total number of Cruise Holidays franchise owners and affiliated locations globally rises to more than 350.

Microsoft vs. Apple In Two Photos: The Battle Over The Many And ...

The biggest difference between Apple and Microsoft? It doesn't take a long-winded or in-depth analysis of the companies' product sales. No, the biggest difference between the Cupertino and Redmond giants can be summed up in just a couple of pictures.

This week included high-profile press events hosted by both Apple and Microsoft, the companies behind two operating systems that have reigned supreme for the past 30 years. The events were held on different coasts (Apple in San Jose, California, and Microsoft in New York City), though the starkest contrast between the two had nothing to do with geography, but rather the presentation and the optics of new products onstage, which underscore the difference in their respective strategies.

Here, first, is a scene from Apple's iPad mini event, the moment after Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller unveiled Apple's new, smaller tablet:

apple ipad mini

The stage is totally clear, and your eyes are focused on only one device: The new iPad mini.

Now, here's a scene from Microsoft's Windows 8 launch event, which is representative of the general mood and view for the audience, both in the building and watching on the live-stream:

windows

What I want to highlight in this image is the sheer multiplicity of devices on display, the several different focal points and options for objects to look at for the viewer.

Now, this difference is almost as old as the rivalry between Microsoft and Apple: Microsoft chose to license out its operating system to different computer manufacturers, which resulted in several different machines running Windows, while Apple chose to keep its operating system to itself and to build its hardware on its own. This is an old story, but one that is still relevant in the ever-escalating war between Apple and its Mac OS, and Microsoft and Windows 8.

The benefits of each approach are obvious, and each has rewarded its respective corporation at various points in the previous decades. With Apple, and the one-size-fits-all approach, you're able to emphasize a single product and explain in detail its specific benefit while convincing the listener of its supremacy over anything else. With Microsoft, and its over 100 Windows 8 devices coming soon to market, you allow the shopper to decide on the device that's best for his or her specific needs, with dozens of options and customizations available.

The disadvantages are just as obvious and can be found elucidated by any passionate partisan booster in any comments section on any tech site on the Internet. Apple limits your choices down to a lonely, frustrating One; shopping for a Windows PC is confusing and time-consuming given all of the options, and the level of support and tech help suffers.

Pros and cons aside, the contrast between the two companies exists and will continue to define the great gulf between Microsoft and Apple's strategies (Even with Microsoft's Surface tablet, whose public presentations have thus far much more closely resembled a hyper-focused Apple event). It's a difference you can see and a difference that endures.

?The Paper Hat Game? Is Ingenious and Truly Original, a Must-See ...

Ingenious and truly original, The Paper Hat Game is a toy-theater piece for children of all ages ? and ?For the Ages.? Creator and director Torry R. Bend, video designer member Raquel Salvatella de Prada, and cohorts have given a face to a faceless male subway commuter in present-day America, and transformed his story into a timeless tale. If Triangle Theater Review had a five-star system to rate the excellence of theatrical productions, The Paper Hat Game would get six!

Duke University faculty members Bend and Salvatella de Prada are at the top of their form in The Paper Hat Game. They cast their theatrical spells ? and the story of their 21st century Everyman unfolds cinematically. Different sizes of puppets expertly manipulated, an awesome assortment of backdrops, and some vivid video projections smoothly shift the audience?s point of view from scene to scene and within scenes.

From a bird?s-eye view, the viewers survey an urban panorama, crisscrossed by a subway train, inching; and then they zoom in on the central character at street level. The view shifts back and forth from side shots of the man in the city to an inside-the subway-car overhead view of the passengers cocooned in that car for their daily commutes.

Instead of acquiescing to forces that want to squeeze him into smaller and smaller cubicles at work and at home, one man fights back ? with humor. The inspiration for The Paper Hat Game came from a spontaneous act of whimsy ? in which Torry Ben?s friend Scotty Iseri transformed a section of his daily newspaper into a paper hat, put it on his head, and offered to make identical hats for his fellow commuters. Thus, Iseri passed into Urban Legend as the inventor of ?The Paper Hat Game,? a one-man crusade to turn the frowns of his fellow subway commuters upside down.

The performers in The Paper Hat Game ? Drina Dunlap, Jess Jones, Monet Marshall, and Evan Mitchell ? and lighting designer Jeanette Yew, assistant lighting designer Rebecca S. Buck, and sound designer Colbert S. Davis for making a Scotty Iseri?s puppet alter ego a Man in Full ? as novelist Tom Wolfe would say ? and Torry R. Bend and Raquel Salvatella de Prada?s dramatization of Iseri?s story three dimensional. Bravo!

How To Make Money From Your Article topics | aayahanolosha.net

Number of View: 59

To make money online many people jump right in ahead of they are properly prepared. You know that to be a genius, a doctor, a stone layer, a construction worker, an office worker, a teacher there are specifications, things you must learn, simply uses be successful, you don?t simply jump right in not prepared.

The same applies to the web marketing industry although there are unsavory individuals who?d have you believe it?s a ?Walk in the Park? and needs no more than the belief that you can easily do it.

And I?ll have to admit, it is a walk in the park compared to what you must put up with in the operating world punching time being a subordinate to someone would you not have your pursuits in mind, but it is possible to rules you have to follow and pitfalls you should avoid to actually help make Internet marketing work for you.

A lot of people will not make a dime online and yet there are others who will make far more in one month compared to most people make inside a whole year. Why is that?

My answer starts with the age-old chicken or even egg question, ?what comes first the poultry or the egg?? Personally I vote for, well don?t worry, each argument a person or I make comes back to the same exact conclusion ? We have no clue and I do not think many of us do both.

But one thing I actually do have a clue concerning and know for sure is always that to make money online you need to first have Passion for the company products and/or support of any Internet business that you expect to make money.

Enthusiasm in this sense basically means that you?ve researched along with like the company and products or services. This will make it that you translate that they like (or Passion) in the education, excitement along with work that usually go with Passion.

I will have to say that many on-line entrepreneurs are so proficient at what they do that they ignore passion because they can market anything. But I am concerned about those of you that aren?t so knowledgeable with working an online business properly.

Now, I?m not scheming to make anyone believe that Passion is the only factor necessary. Because to hit your objectives you must also have a excellent website, good advertising, widespread advertising, business support, effective key phrases, and etc. Those actions are often learned from the company you sign up for ? but sidestep Passion and you reduce your chances for success significantly.

It therefore follows that, if you have no Love for the company and the products provided by that business, again, you won?t make an effort to do the work you are being taught.

Internet marketing effort is typically not all that difficult or time-consuming but it does take determination caused by Passion to get you off and working with a sustained work so that you won?t fall.

You have a great source in the Internet search engines to locate about the Internet Marketing industry for business opportunities, USE IT!

Your research should uncover a firm that you like and have self-assurance in. It should be strong, founded on excellent principles, and easy to be aware of with great services and products that are sell-able for which you can have Passion. If you don?t think it is move on.

You can find the proper opportunity containing your attributes identified previously mentioned.

Comments like, properly, that one sounds great and the compensation plan is very useful so I guess I?m going to start that enterprise ? does not appear to be a decision based on something near Passion. Don?t forget when you hear make fish an Internet ?guru? does that, don?t be tempted, because when I said earlier they are experienced and will sell just about anything, without getting Passionate about the company products and services.

Note: By the way it?s goal to get to the point where you can sell about everything online. That finish skill and goal is a worthy one indeed.

Fundamental analysis 23 October 2012 | Inside Forex trading

Last Monday was not an exception. As it often happens, on the first day of the current week on the trading it was observed slack and not interesting trade, which ended in neutral results of the main currency pairs. The dollar was under a small pressure of the European majors in the first part of the session. It probably could be caused by technical factors, when short-term investors began to correct their positions withing the strong level of support. It is not excluded that the messages from Spain supported optimism a little bit, where election results in one of the region of the country showed that the policy of Spain government is supported. By the end of trading the dollar ,managed to return all losses against the pound and a part of losses against the euro, but the dollar was leader when paired with the yen and managed to strengthen to the new local maximums. In this case the dollar was supported by weak data about the results of Japan foreign trade, which made the markets think that BoJ will continue to extend the relaxation program in the nearest future. The US economic statistics wasn?t published yesterday. There is not much information today. Attention can be drawn only on the FRS report by Richmond about the production activity. The forecasts suggest that the index will decrease by the level 3 from 4 in the previous month. Taking into account the absence of important news in other regions it can be suggested that there will be no active trading in the next session. Moreover, investor?s passivity may be caused by the approaching of such important event as the publication of FRS decision about the rate which will happen on the next Wednesday.

EUR

The euro increased a little on Monday trading. Probably investors began to correct their positions on the strong technical levels as a result of absence of news. Also one of the reason of some optimism increase could be the results of regional elections in Spain, where Prime Minister?s party remained in power in Galicia. It was regarded as the support of strict economy measures, conducted by government. Except it, another favourable news for the risk were the message from Germany about the support of Greece appeal about the terms prolongation, in the course of which all obligations, set for Athens in the time of aid receipt from international creditors, should be fulfilled. The Eurozone economy data weren?t published yesterday, information about the European financial management as usually contained the current problem in broad outline and didn?t influence investors? mood. Todays? news package is also almost empty. Market?s attention will be drawn only by the publication of preliminary estimation of consumer trust index of Eurozone during October, the forecasts expect further decrease of this index by -26.0 from -25.9 earlier, and it obviously won?t improve mood for the euro. As to the prospects, it is assumed that expectation of news about FRS decisions from the USA leave a volatility weak, the market will be waiting and begin to demonstrate range trading.

GBP

On Monday trading British currency followed common mood of the market and also strengthen against the dollar at the beginning of trading, but in the second part it was weakening. As a result sterling pound was in neutral position against the dollar at the end of trading according to price at the beginning. UK economic statistics was not published yesterday, and today it will be published a little bit. News packet will demonstrate only British Bank Association (BBA) report about mortgage credits in September ? it is expected the increase in the number of approved mortgage credits by 30.9 thousands from 30.5 thousand. As to the politics it is be introduced by the head of Bank of England M. Kipling. -According to him market may get information about the question ? will British regulator expend the relaxation program at the nearest meeting on deliveries.

JPY

The yen was continuing to decrease against all its opponents. Very weak results of Japanese external trading lead to the massive yen trading on Monday. It intensified an expectation of the relaxation in monetary policy of Bank of Japan. It is supported by the Members of Japanese government which announce about the necessity of economic stimulation. It increases the probability of that on October 30th at the next meeting of the managers of Bank of Japan additional measures of monetary policy will be announces. Japanese economic statistics published today showed mood decrease in small business ? confidence index in small business in October decreased by 43.7 from 45.1 earlier. As to the expectations concerning the yen, it seems that it is still under pressure, but in the nearest future yen trading will be over, as the USD/JPY pair approached a strong technical level 80.00, where resistance is stronger. Investors will also wait for the results of FRS meeting, which will be published tomorrow.

Texas Instruments sees weaker chip market in Q4

Texas Instruments reported third-quarter profits higher than expected, thanks to benefits from taxes and a Japanese pension program. Net profit rose 30 percent to USD 784 million or USD 0.61 per share, versus an earlier outlook from the company of USD 0.38-0.42 per share. The one-time gains not included in the outlook were worth 22 cents a share. Revenues were down 2 percent from a year earlier and up 2 percent from Q2 to USD 3.390 billion, in line with the chipmaker's guidance.?

However, TI said the semiconductor market remains weak and "likely will get weaker in the fourth quarter". The weakness in TI's business came in the Wireless segment, where it reported an operating loss of USD 52 million on sales down 44 percent from a year ago to USD 325 million. The other segments Embedded Processing and Analog now make up 70 percent of revenues, and each grew sales 2 percent sequentially in the quarter.?

Total orders at the company reached USD 3.24 billion, up 6 percent from the year-ago quarter and down 5 percent from the prior quarter. TI forecast fourth-quarter revenues down versus Q3 at USD 2.83-3.07 billion, while EPS is estimated at USD 0.23-0.61, including 6 cents in acquisition and restructuring charges.?

PFT: Cutler thinks Suh hit Monday night was clean

terrible-towel-e1345126863352

If the folks at Gorilla Gold were trying to help the Chargers by taking responsibility for the item that was confiscated last week during the Monday night game between San Diego and Denver, it likely won?t work.? If the folks at Gorilla Gold were looking to help themselves gain publicity and/or notoriety, it likely will.

As explained by MDS, Gorilla Gold claims that the Chargers use their product, which ?supplies a light tack, much like a tackified glove? and that ?leaves no discernable residue on the surface of the ball.?? The president of the company tells U-T San Diego that 70 percent of NFL teams have used the towel at some point.

That doesn?t make it permissible.

Rule 5, Section 4, Article 4(h) of the NFL rulebook prohibits ?[a]dhesive or slippery substances on the body, equipment, or uniform of any player; provided, however, that players may wear gloves with a tackified surface if such tacky substance does not adhere to the football or otherwise cause handling problems for players.?

The fact that the towel creates an effect ?like a tackified glove? means that it?s not a tackified glove, and thus not permitted to be used.

Besides, it?s not clear that the item taken by officials was a Gorilla Gold towel.? On Monday, coach Norv Turner clumsily declined to identify the maker of the towel, saying that ?[t]he towel is used to dry the balls, the gloves the players use and their arms.?? Moreover, it?s still possible that something else entirely was being used by the Chargers.

It?ll be interesting to see whether the investigation expands to determine which teams have used and/or are still using Gorilla Gold.

Key Person Insurance - Rock Solid Finance with David Worrell

Post image for Key Person Insurance: How to pick a policy without getting ripped off

If given the choice, I think most business owners would rather discuss?well?just about?anything?other than life insurance. Who wants to think about their own death?

But if you love your business, care about your employees and want to protect your business partners, then you should be thinking about it. ?Now? while you still can.

Most business owners buy?key person life insurance?at some point in their career. This type of insurance helps your company overcome?the loss of its most valuable employee? You!

[Note: Don't confuse this with a policy to fund your?buy-sell agreement, which we have written about before. ?A key-man policy?is not typically used by the company (or your partner) to buy out your share of the company.]

Getting the right deal can be tricky, however, even for an experienced agent. ?So let?s take a careful look at the kinds of policies you?ll want and the ways to avoid getting ripped off.

What to Ask for
Key person insurance works best with either a?whole life?or?universal life insurance?policy. Both of these are called ?cash value insurance? policies ? meaning that your company receives?both a death benefit?and?a cash value reserve?amount that can be used any time (and for any reason) during your life. Great, right? ?You don?t have to die!

While term insurance can be used, it comes with risks. Most states don?t allow policies on people over age 80 or 85, and normally there is?no cash value?to a term policy. This is a lose-lose: if you no longer need the policy, there?s nothing to withdraw? and if you live past 85, there?s no payment to help replace you. Either result is a bad deal.

Make Your Policy Fit Your Circumstances
Cash value policies?are not all the same. ?You can pick a policy that emphasizes a high death benefit or a policy that emphasizes a high cash value amount. If you plan to die at your desk and really want to leave in style, go for a large death benefit. ?If you plan to retire or close the business in the next 10 years, think about accumulating a larger cash value in the policy ? that way you can?withdraw the value without actually, uh, dying.

  • For the larger death benefit, purchase something called a ?straight whole life? or ?ordinary whole life.? A universal life policy with secondary guarantees or ?guaranteed universal life? policy also works very well. Ask your agent about this helpful twist.
  • If you?d rather accumulate some cash value?(while still getting a decent death benefit of course), choose a ?participating high cash value whole life policy.? These policies are sometimes referred to as??10 pay whole life? or ?20-pay whole life,? and they pay dividends that help accelerate the cash value growth as well as the death benefit. ?(NOTE: for universal life policies, be sure you get a ?minimum death benefit/maximum cash value? schedule. This minimizes the costs of the insurance while maximizing the cash value.)

Avoid Being Ripped Off
While most insurance agents are honest and decent people, there are always a few bad apples in the industry. Sadly, the number of dishonest (or just plain ignorant) agents seems to be growing. ?Protect yourself with these simple tips:

  • Ask about commissions:??If you are purchasing a policy to maximize cash value, the agent?s commission should almost never be more than 50 percent of the first year?s premium. Forty percent or less is standard. For maximum death benefit policies, a reasonable commission for the agent is 90 or 100 percent of the first year premium. Anything over these amounts should be considered an ?expensive? policy.
  • Budget more:??When purchasing universal life, it?s always a good idea to pay more than the listed target premium in your policy?s illustration and contract, regardless of your company?s goal for the policy. The target premium is the?minimum?premium required to make the contract work. Never assume the minimum will be sufficient.
  • Don?t be fooled by quotes.?While most insurance agents will tell you to obtain several quotes, quotes can be highly misleading if you?re only looking at the ?illustrated? rates for the policy. Agents love to show you the these, but an illustrated rate only show you how the policy works, not how it will actually perform. Instead, compare two quotes by looking for a table in the illustration called the ?cost surrender index.? This will tell you how much you?re paying per $1,000 of insurance.

Cashing Out
When you ? or your key persons ? die, a key-person insurance policy will pay off and the proceeds will go to your company. ?The proceeds are tax-free because the premiums are non-deductible (you paid taxes on the premiums all along, so you won?t pay on the benefit).

The pay-out can be used for any purpose, but of course the whole point was to find a replacement CEO and train her to fill your shoes ? as big as they might be. ?Your staff or heirs could also use the money to wind-down the business, bonus employees, or maybe just throw a giant party. ?You can?t control how they will spend it, but you can make it possible for those left to continue the business without you.

Dedicated to your (endless) profits, ? David Lewis

Nissan developing new hybrid tech, could debut in Infiniti CUV

Nissan Serena hybrid JDM minivan - front three-quarter view

Nissan sells more pure electric vehicles (EVs) than any other automaker, but the EV market remains tiny. The hybrid market, while also just a small percentage of new vehicles sold, is bigger ? and it's a segment where Nissan hasn't really been playing. The Altima Hybrid, for example, was killed off last year. No one really misses it, though, because Nissan is now able to get nearly equivalent fuel efficiency ratings without a battery. There are signs that Nissan is ready to change its tune on gas-electric hybrids, though, and it starts with Infiniti.

Automotive News reports that a new Nissan-designed front-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain will likely be introduced in the Infiniti JX three-row crossover "or a similar class vehicle." Then there will be an average of one new hybrid model each year, with a plug-in version of the JX/CUV in 2015. In this way, Nissan's EV advantage could pay dividends as global fuel economy requirements continue to increase. And that's the way that Nissan will have to spin this re-entry into the hybrid market, since CEO Carlos Ghosn said in 2009 that Nissan was, "not intending to play a leadership role in hybrids. One company already assumed leadership in the technology. We want leadership on EVs."

In Japan, Nissan recently introduced the Serena S Hybrid (shown above), which uses the company's less-powerful "smart and simple" hybrid powertrain. The Serena is Japan's best-selling minivan and the new gas-electric version gets around 36 miles per gallon (on Japan's lenient test cycle). That's about a 10-percent improvement over the non-hybrid model, AN reports, and a Nissan exec tells the industry paper that the company's target is to get up to a 30-percent improvement whenever a model receives its new hybrid powertrain.

Oil price rises on Middle East conflict fears

Oil prices rose Monday after violence in Lebanon sparked fears of wider unrest in the Middle East.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for November delivery was up 75 cents to $90.80 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.05 to end at $90.05 per barrel on Friday.

In London, Brent crude was up 59 cents to $110.73 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Fears of instability in the Middle East flared anew Friday, when Lebanon's intelligence chief, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, was assassinated in a massive car bombing. He was a powerful opponent of Syria, which for decades has wielded political and military influence in Lebanon.

Syria itself has been riven with violence since an uprising against President Bashar Assad began in February 2011.

"At present, we do not expect conflict to spread outside of Syria and Lebanon but the Middle East holds several key oil transit routes ? the Suez Canal and Strait of Hormuz," said Edward Bell, commodities analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit. "Any disruption in passing through these chokepoints would contribute to a momentary upward shift in oil prices."

Brent prices were also supported by the delayed return to production of the Buzzard oil field in the North Sea.

"Buzzard is now in its seventh week of complete shut-in, despite initially having been expected to start up after about five weeks of maintenance and be fully back on stream around the middle of October," said a report from KBC Energy Economics in London.

In other energy futures trading in New York:

- Heating oil rose 0.55 cent to $3.1231 per gallon.

- Wholesale gasoline added 1.05 cents to $2.6826 per gallon.

- Natural gas was up 2 cents at $3.637 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Curriculum to be revamped | Ministry of Labour and Human ...

Vocational Education:?To create better employment opportunities for technical and? vocational education and training (TVET) graduates, a training need analysis will be carried out over the next four months.

The training need analysis will be conducted by the private and public training institutes, so that courses will be designed to cater to the need and demand of TVET graduates in the job market.

Until now, labour officials said courses were designed in such a way that it often resulted in unemployment, due to mismatch of skills.

However, in the next four months, the training institutes will be visiting various private and corporate agencies to discuss? their demand from TVET graduates and coordinate? accordingly.

The training institutions will be using the labour market information guide and human resource series as reference, labour officials said.

There are over 70 training institutes in the country, which provide both long and short term trainings for Class X and XII school leavers.

Chief program officer, Sangay Dorji, said unemployment of TVET graduates resulted mainly due to the mismatch of skills and requirements in the labour market.

?The training institutes will have to understand the employable skills required in the job market,? he said.

For instance, IT training is an additional skill that enhances employment opportunities, Sangay Dorji said. ?We don?t want sophisticated courses,? he said. ?Such courses will just remain on paper.?

Henceforth, the human resource division of the labour department will also monitor all courses and curriculum the training institutes would offer.? The division will also review, validate, and endorse the courses and curriculum.

The designing of the course was discussed over a three-day training programme for training institutes last week, where most of them agreed it was necessary to design courses according to the job market.

The training on course design and development was conducted in collaboration with the Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) for technical education for in-country training program.

Niche Institute and Financial services CEO, Bimla Rai, said? there was a competition in the market, especially for courses such as commercial accounting. ?Some training institutions don?t get candidates at all,? she said.

In debates and life, Romney likes the rules

(AP) ? When it comes to debates, Mitt Romney loves the rules.

The eyes of millions of voters upon him, the Republican candidate is quick to poke holes in his rival's arguments. But he's just as ready to take the moderator to task when he believes the predetermined ground rules have been breached.

Expect more of the same Tuesday when he and President Barack Obama square off for the third and final time.

Romney bickered with moderator Jim Lehrer in the first presidential debate over whose turn it was to have the final say on taxes. "Jim, the president began this segment, so I think I get the last word," he said. He lodged a similar complaint in the second debate when denied one last chance to weigh in, prompting moderator Candy Crowley to interject that "it doesn't quite work like that."

"The last part, it's for the two of you to talk to one another, and it isn't quite as ordered as you think," she said.

It is that ordered for Romney, who seems at his best and most relaxed in settings with clearly defined parameters that many others experience as overly rigid or stilted. Romney's fondness for the rules mirrors other traits that have been frequent themes throughout his personal and professional life: organization, personal discipline and meticulous attention to detail.

For voters, it offers a window into the fastidiousness and precision he would likely bring with him to the Oval Office.

"He's highly analytical, highly linear in his thinking," said Doug Gross, who chaired Romney's 2008 campaign in Iowa. "When someone steps out of line and your logic is linear, that causes dissonance in your brain."

Romney's partiality to rules in the debate setting was on display throughout the Republican primary, where he resisted efforts by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., to relax them. Gingrich, whose come-from-behind victory in South Carolina in January was fueled by robust debate performances, wanted audiences to be able to participate more freely in future debates.

Not so fast, said Romney, arguing that candidates seeking the nomination ought to be prepared for the much stricter rules imposed during general-election debates.

You might have thought Romney himself was the moderator in a debate last October when he cut off Texas Gov. Rick Perry to lay down the letter of the law.

"You get 30 seconds," Romney told his opponent. "The way the rules work here is that I get 60 seconds, and then you get 30 seconds to respond, right?"

It's not just during debates. The tendency to abide by rules permeates the way the former Massachusetts governor has carried himself as a candidate, a businessman and a patriarch.

On the campaign trail, Romney typically refuses to answer questions from the traveling band of reporters that constantly shadows him ? except for specially designated times.

"We have press avails and press conferences almost every day, and that's when I answer the questions," Romney said to reporters shouting out questions as he greeted voters in last November in Tampa, Fla.

As a businessman, Romney was known for his systematic, data-driven approach to evaluating risk. Former colleagues have described a man reluctant to entertain ethical gray areas, motivated by his sense that the best ideas thrive when the playing field is level.

"He has an intrinsic sense of fairness and playing by the rules," Gross said. "When he sees someone trying to sidestep or bend the rules, he thinks it's potentially disruptive to the entire process and the entire institution."

Such scrupulousness extends deeply into Romney's personal life, where he firmly adheres to the directives of his faith, abstaining from caffeine and alcohol and donating a substantial portion of his income to the Mormon Church.

Personal responsibility and discipline also seem to be values he expects those around him to uphold. A Vanity Fair profile of Romney in February detailed the strict rules that govern Romney road trips: No unscheduled bathroom breaks for the kids, except when the family stops for gas.

At their summer home in Wolfeboro, N.H., Romney's family holds an annual series of highly regimented games dubbed the "Romney Olympics." They partake in events like nail-hammering, where participants have to hammer a certain number of nails into a board. It's normally one of Romney's best events ? he doesn't tend to do as well in the more athletic competitions, like running ? but he lost a recent round because he put one of the nails in off-center.

In the Romney household, nails that aren't hammered in straight don't count.

Even the most mundane tasks aren't exempt from a wrong and right way of doing things. Asked about their spousal pet peeves in September on ABC's "Live! With Kelly and Michael," Ann Romney said her husband takes issue with the way she squeezes her toothpaste.

"That's right," he replied. "She doesn't go from the bottom and work up, and she leaves the top off."

Why Paying For Car Insurance is Worth Every Penny ? Airborn Eduper

on October 21, 2012

Insurance Gilroy There are more cars and drivers hitting the road every year. With so many vehicles on the road, crashes will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a small setback and a major hassle. But why do you need insurance and just how much should you buy? Auto insurance protects you by paying for damage or injury you cause others while driving your car, damage to your car or injury to you or your passengers from a crash, and specific other occurrences, such as theft. Auto insurance is required by law in all states and provinces. Choosing to drive without insurance could cause you to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage for which you might be responsible. It pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. If you are sued, it also pays your defense and court costs. State laws usually mandate minimum amounts, but higher amounts are available and usually recommended. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is typically set by the state. Medical payments: This coverage is available in non-no-fault states; it pays despite who may have been at fault. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical or funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: Pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: This applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverage, such as emergency road service and car rental, is also available.Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you select * The make and model of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, gender and marital status and * Where you live Many people think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can save your financial well-being. Evaluate your needs, do your research and with the help of your insurance agent choose the option that best suits you.

Gas prices drop as demand tapers off

Gerald Herbert / AP

Gas prices are displayed at a gas station and mini-mart in the Mid City section of New Orleans in New Orleans. Gasoline prices averaged $3.7529 per gallon on Oct. 19, down from $3.8375 on Oct. 5.

By Reuters

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States fell more than 8 cents during the past two weeks, weighed down by the drop in crude oil prices and low seasonal demand, according to a widely followed survey released on Sunday.

Gasoline prices averaged $3.7529 per gallon on Oct. 19, down from $3.8375 on Oct. 5, Trilby Lundberg, editor of the Lundberg Survey, said. This came after a month-long period when gas prices averaged around the $3.83 per gallon price, she added.

U.S. crude futures have dropped from September highs above $100 per barrel, contributing to the slide in gasoline prices, and last Friday, they ended at $90.14 per barrel, down more than 2 percent.

Lundberg said further declines in retail gas prices are expected if the cost of crude oil does not rise substantially. She added that in California, gasoline prices could have a "dramatic crash" after refinery problems caused a spike two weeks ago.

Average prices at the pump in California fell 2.95 cents to $4.46. Two weeks ago, drivers there were paying about $4.49.

The highest prices for regular gasoline recorded in the Oct. 19 survey were in San Francisco at $4.50 a gallon, while the drivers in Tulsa, Oklahoma, were paying the least at $3.26 per gallon.
