Usain Bolt's record-breaking 200m win attracts ... - BBC World News

A peak audience of around 13.7m tuned in to BBC One to watch Usain Bolt win his historic 200m gold medal, according to overnight figures. And it is thought that those watching the race on big screens, in pubs or on the dedicated Olympics channel BBC Olympics 1 could push the actual ratings far higher. Also faring well were the women?s boxing finals on Thursday, which scored an average audience of 3.9m, between 4 and 7pm, peaking at 5m in the last 15 minutes of coverage. Bolt?s 200m victory scored a smaller audience than the 20m who tuned in to watch him triumph in the 100m race ? an audience which is the biggest so far for a sporting event at the games. Jessica Ennis?s triumph last weekend attracted an audience of 17m (Picture: Getty Images) Other events which have proven popular over the fortnight have included last Saturday night?s athletics, when a peak audience of 17m watched Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah take gold medals. Rebecca Adlington?s first bronze-winning swim and Michael Phelps?s record-breaking performance also proved popular, scoring audiences of 10.7m and 10.6m respectively. However the most watched event of the games so far remains the opening ceremony, which attracted a peak audience of just under 27m and an average of 24.2m ? making it the second most watched event in UK TV history.
