The Many Uses Of A Hot Air Balloon

When you think of hot air balloons, images of family days out and birthday celebrations come to mind. That is because a lot of hot air balloon rides are for celebrations with the family! But balloons actually have a lot more uses then for just commercial use. Read on for all the uses hot air balloons have!

A Helping Hand During Wartime.

In the past, hot air balloons were called up in the line of duty. During the Second World War hot air balloons were used to protect the city of London below. They were adapted and called barrage balloons. They were filled with air and floated up into the London skyline. By doing so, they obstructed the city below from dive bombers. No air craft could get near enough to drop bombs on the city, as the balloons were in the way. They saved thousands of people living in the city of London.

Eureka!

It may sound strange to some, but hot air balloons are used as a means of conducting research. As they are extremely lightweight they can be sent into the sky and record information. Balloons are used regularly to conduct experiments about how weather can affect certain things. For instance, a balloon was launched into the sky over the Mediterranean Sea to better understand extreme weather conditions.

But this research is not only used over seas. Balloons also make excellent flying equipment to explore the rain forest. The rain forest is a vast, dense space, making it difficult to spot any changes to the landscape. Hot air balloons are fitted with cameras and flown over the rain forest canopy. This way they can document how it looks, and then take photos some time later and compare them. This allows experts to learn more about the rain forest, through the use of hot air balloons.

In Need Of Some Assistance?

If so, balloons can show you the way. Balloons are rather large contraptions, which makes them perfect for advertising space! Lots of agencies have cottoned on to this idea and have branded hot air balloons to advertise themselves. This most commonly happens at fairs and festivals, as they are easy to spot from a long distance. More recently, they have been used as a means of signalling a first aid tent, so that those in need can get to help as quickly as possible.
